Contemporary Quaker Attitudes To Science And Technology, Jackie Leach Scully
Contemporary Quaker Attitudes To Science And Technology, Jackie Leach Scully
Quaker Studies
I discuss some data on contemporary Quaker attitudes to science, particularly gene technology, gathered from member of Britain Yearly Meeting. Quakers are often perceived as having a relatively positive attitude towards innovation, including technology, and some confirmation of this can be found in Quaker history, until 30 years ago. The observations described in this paper suggest that, in line with the general trend in the west towards a greater skepticism about the benefits of science, the current attitude of British Friends towards the practice of science is a more ambivalent or even negative one, although attitudes towards the scientific/experimental method …
Religion Misused By Serbs And Croats, Maja Torlo
Religion Misused By Serbs And Croats, Maja Torlo
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This research concentrates on the Christian and Orthodox religion among the Serbs and Croats in former Yugoslavia and how it contributed to the outbreak of the Serbo-Croat war in 1992. This is done by assessing the main ways in which religion was abused and twisted to raise anger, fear, and enmity between Croats and Serbs by both nationalistic leaders and Church leaders in the period from the communist rule to the outbreak in 1992. Therefore, first, the following things are assessed: the consequences of (1) identification and grouping of people along religious and ethnic lines, (2) mass religious events, which …

Islam As A Way Of Defining The National Identity Of Bosnian Muslims, Athanasios G. Athanasiadis
Islam As A Way Of Defining The National Identity Of Bosnian Muslims, Athanasios G. Athanasiadis
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Political changes in Yugoslavia in the 1990s triggered a series of changes in the ethno-religious field. The ethnological problems faced by the residents of Bosnia formed part of more general ethnological reshuffling in former Yugoslavia, promoting idealized nations, non-existent ethnic ideologies and fabricated state designs. However, these nations already constitute part of the reshuffling of the reform of New Europe. A major part was played in the formulation of the ethnic identity of Bosnian Muslims by the Islamic Community, under unique conditions and in cooperation with the Communist Yugoslavia of Josip Broz Tito from 1945 to 1990. The description and …

Moral Issues In The Recent History Of The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Ivelina Nikolova
Moral Issues In The Recent History Of The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Ivelina Nikolova
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Over the past centuries Bulgarian people experienced severe religious and ethnic threats due to which they have developed defense mechanisms and a strong sense of sympathy for persecuted ethnic and social groups. In recent history, this reflex was manifested most clearly in the behavior of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in defense of the Bulgarian Jews. At the same time two other events, however, reveal its controversial image that caused it a severe damage. In recent years, many Bulgarians are seeking the moral dimensions of these phenomena that influence the spirituality and morality of the younger generations.

The Religious Conditions Of The Jewish People In The Georgia Region During The First Quarter Of The Twentieth Century (During The Period Of The Soviet Repression), Giorgi Sosiashvili
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This paper analyzes the condition of Judaism and of the Jewish people in the first quarter of the 20th century after Soviet authority was established in Georgia. The Bolsheviks annexed the independent democratic republic. Russian violence was not only political. The new authority expressed unprecedented aggression towards different religious confessions in the country. Among the persecuted confessions were also representatives of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The Bolsheviks expropriated chapels from Jews living in Kareli, Surami, and Gori. It is a well-known fact that the Jews had lived in Shida Kartli for a long time. In 19th and 20th centuries 400 …

From Genocide To Dialogue Christian-Muslim Relations In The Former Yugoslavia, Paul Mojzes
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Extremely complex historical circumstances and modern political manipulations have caused in the Balkans three major waves of genocides during the twentieth century. The conflicts were so varied and widespread that it will not be possible to provide an adequate overview in this paper. The first one took place during the I and II Balkan Wars in 1912-1913, in which genocides occurred in the effort of four allied countries (Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, and Serbia) to liberate themselves from the Ottoman Empire. Then the second war broke out leading to genocidal ethnic cleansing as the embattled nations of the Balkans attempted to …
Ethno-Nationalistic And Religious-Nationalistic Components Of Identity In Post-Soviet Georgia, Ana Chelidze
Ethno-Nationalistic And Religious-Nationalistic Components Of Identity In Post-Soviet Georgia, Ana Chelidze
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Deep economic and democratic changes in Georgian society in last 20 years have conditioned the transformation of social environment in such a way that people had to change their views on society and their place in the new social environment. Changing attitudes on social reality affected and transformed the whole system of social identity. Transformation processes were characterized with reduced trust and tolerance among people and different social groups and with increase or weakening of different aspects of basic identities. Difficulties emerging from the process of formation of the identity system hinder the development of integration processes in the society. …

Christian Librarians And The Library Bill Of Rights: A Survey Of Opinions And Professional Practice, Scott Kaihoi
Christian Librarians And The Library Bill Of Rights: A Survey Of Opinions And Professional Practice, Scott Kaihoi
The Christian Librarian
This study used a survey methodology to discover how Christian librarians working in academic libraries responded to the American Library Association’s (ALA) ethical standards as embodied in the Library Bill of Rights (LBR). The results showed that while the Christian librarians surveyed largely support the LBR and adhere to it professionally, their interpretation of its sometimes ambiguous language is made through the lens of a Christian worldview and can conflict with the ALA’s interpretation. Of particular concern to the respondents were issues of collection development and access to content like pornography, violence, or other similar material that conflicts with Christian …

"Tutorials: Resource Instruction For Distance Learners", Pamela Greenlee
The Christian Librarian
Academic librarians, devoted to providing resources and services for learners, find both opportunity and challenge in the continuing growth of online programs in higher education. The technology tools available for online courses are also available to librarians seeking to support those courses with research and information literacy skills instruction. Researchers have delineated factors necessary for achieving defined learning outcomes with online tutorials. These factors include assignment relevance, faculty collaboration, and student interaction. A fourth issue emerges as equally critical; there must be a single iteration of the tutorial, posted in a unique online location, and subject to dynamic revision. There …

It is a path which fortifies its wayfarers with ethical and spiritual principles, which bring closeness to the Divine. Being founded on the revealed religion of Islam, Bektashism offers a unique and distinctive reading of the Qur’an, as well as the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, …
The Fear Of The Lord Is The Beginning Of Librarianship, Garrett Trott
The Fear Of The Lord Is The Beginning Of Librarianship, Garrett Trott
The Christian Librarian
Terminology plays a critical role in understanding any discipline. The terms data, information, knowledge and wisdom are key terms when working with library and information science, thus how they are defined underpin a librarian’s philosophy, which is manifested in service. This article will look at these four key terms through a rigorous Christian intellectual framework, suggesting that the fear of the Lord provides a foundation upon which library services should be based. After providing this framework, this article will provide some examples of how the fear of the Lord can be applied in library services.
