Pilot Study Of The Contributions Of Achievement-Striving And Dutifulness On Intimate Partner Violence In Intimate Dyads, Ernest M. Oleksy, Liz Goncy
Pilot Study Of The Contributions Of Achievement-Striving And Dutifulness On Intimate Partner Violence In Intimate Dyads, Ernest M. Oleksy, Liz Goncy
The Downtown Review
The purpose of this pilot study was to further our knowledge about the interaction of trait conscientiousness of one’s self and one’s partner with the occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV) as we prepare for a larger study that will utilize this pilot study’s protocol. Conscientiousness has been demonstrated to be positively correlated with increased satisfaction in couples (Malouff, Thorsteinsson, Schutte, Bhullar, & Rooke, 2010), while different facets of conscientiousness have been demonstrated to have differential effects on relational behavior, like achievement-striving and duty’s opposing effects on commitment dilemmas (Moon, 2001). Furthermore, the negative correlation between conscientiousness and deviance (Rao, …
Comparing The Violent Crime Trends In Select States To The National Trends To Determine Differences Between Crimes, States, And Regions, Alexandra N. Kremer
Comparing The Violent Crime Trends In Select States To The National Trends To Determine Differences Between Crimes, States, And Regions, Alexandra N. Kremer
The Downtown Review
Violent crimes include crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, and assault. The FBI in the UCR breaks these down into Type I, crimes against the person, and Type II, property crimes, offenses. The FBI also divides the country into four regions: West, South, Northeast, and Midwest. Each of these regions are examined, through the use of two states from each, here. Their overall violent crime rates and trends, and their specific Type I offensive rates and trends, are examined against the national data and against each other. Several theories are used to explain the potential causes of the differences in …
Brief Literature Review On Conscientiousness And Responsivity To Cbi Programming, Ernest M. Oleksy
Brief Literature Review On Conscientiousness And Responsivity To Cbi Programming, Ernest M. Oleksy
The Downtown Review
This article reviews the literature of how individual differences (specifically trait conscientiousness) may contribute to ex-offender responsivity to reentry programming. By studying if individual differences (e.g. personality traits) contribute to specific responsivity, programming can be determined to be ineffective for the general population and redesigned in a manner that is beneficial for the largest number of clients. To that end, this literature review provides a conceptual foundation for potential future studies, based on what previous researchers have found in their own studies. With this knowledge, future researchers will be better equipped to make sense of findings once they analyze their …
Food Deserts In Urban Areas, Regina Bellian
Food Deserts In Urban Areas, Regina Bellian
The Downtown Review
This paper illustrates the issue of food deserts faced by urban areas in three parts. Part one focuses on defining food deserts and what exactly the term denotes as well as who is affected by their present existence socially, physically, and economically. Part two presents research on some of the current policies and programs in place to address the issue of food deserts and discusses a few of the difficulties in implementing them. These approaches are then further analyzed for effectiveness in varying regions. Part three explores a handful of alternative methods to combat this urban issue in order to …
A Criminological Interpretation Of Kip Kinkel, Ernest M. Oleksy
A Criminological Interpretation Of Kip Kinkel, Ernest M. Oleksy
The Downtown Review
Kip Kinkel, responsible for the Thurston High School Shooting, made headlines for his criminality in the late '90s. Whenever a tragedy like the aforementioned one occurs, researchers and law enforcement attempt to hypothesize and theorize why a particular individual resorted to violent crime, and if such occurrences can be predicted and suppressed in the future. This article offers numerous theoretical explanations to Kinkel's behavior, analyzing his background, lifestyle, and information provided by himself and other who knew him.
Reviewing The Literature On Staff Misconduct And Specific Responsivity, Ernest M. Oleksy
Reviewing The Literature On Staff Misconduct And Specific Responsivity, Ernest M. Oleksy
The Downtown Review
Incarceration is a trying time for inmates as they are punished for crimes they committed while free in society. Beyond the legitimate punishment of being imprisoned, inmates may face illegitimate punishment at the hands of prison staff, ranging from ridicule to physical and sexual violence. Apart from the obvious corruption and immorality involved in staff misconduct, such deviance can also result in a dampened responsivity to reentry programming efforts that strive to keep inmates out of prison. In this literature review, I investigate, summarize, and synthesize the corpus that is relevant to how staff misconduct can be a negative specific …
A Brief Review Of Freudian And Jungian Theories, Ernest M. Oleksy
A Brief Review Of Freudian And Jungian Theories, Ernest M. Oleksy
The Downtown Review
Freud and Jung are two of the most prominent and celebrated psychologists. Jung being a student of Freud's, the two's theories overlap considerably. Despite this lineage, however, there are marked differences between how the two theorists understood human behavior. This article highlights some of the major elements of both men's theories and offers criticisms and contextualizations to offer new perspectives in understanding these theories.
A Critique Of Bruce Gilley's "The Case For Colonialism", Ernest M. Oleksy
A Critique Of Bruce Gilley's "The Case For Colonialism", Ernest M. Oleksy
The Downtown Review
Bruce Gilley's article defending colonialism created quite a stir amongst global development's academia. This article esponds to Gilley's article, primarily as an antithesis. Through a recount of historical examples across the globe, this article points out Gilley's weaker arguments for colonialism.
A Review Of Modern Development, Ernest M. Oleksy
A Review Of Modern Development, Ernest M. Oleksy
The Downtown Review
To better understand the historical and sociological impact of modern development, I conducted a literature review to compare and contrast varying viewpoints on development’s legacy. The official start of the modern era of development begins with President Truman’s 1949 speech that declared global poverty a threat to all nations since it could lead to communism. WWII resulted in social problems unresolvable for any one nation: Europe was war-torn, the aftereffects of the Great Depression were significant, and multiple Asian nations grappled with humanitarian tragedies. WWII fomented nationalism in many countries worldwide, resulting in wars of liberation. In response, the First …
