Adaptive reuse of historic buildings generates many tangible and intangible benefits. These benefits are not limited to the initiator (usually the developer) but are expanded to the community and the local government. This dissertation empirically investigates the role of tax credits in initiators' decisions to reuse religious buildings and their choice of reuse project outcomes, including the federal historic preservation tax credit, the low income housing tax credit, and the new market tax credit. Urban College Graduates;Their Investments In And Returns For Strong Quantitative Skills, Social Capital Skills, And Soft Skills, Marie Ellen Haynes

This case study examined strong quantitative skills, social capital skills, and soft skills of urban college graduates using data from the Multi-City Study of Urban Inequality Household Survey. The urban college graduates lived in Atlanta, Boston, or Los Angeles and had bachelor's, master's, PhD, and professional degrees. Among the three skills only strong quantitative skills was found to be associated with positive and significant returns. Those returns did not emerge because strong quantitative skills were used as a proxy for the ability to perform jobs that require frequent use of mathematics and frequent use of computers. The purpose of this cross-sectional analysis was to determine the importance of spatial accessibility to health care services utilization and to the health status of persons with disabilities. This study utilizes two datasets (Survey of Access to Outpatient Medical Service in the Rural Southeast and Ohio Family Health Survey) to analyze. ArcGIS 9.2 was use to measure spatial accessibility to health care services. Housing Choice Voucher Program is the single largest housing subsidy program in the USA with the goal of poverty deconcentration and race desegregation. This study aims to identify the presence and locations of voucher holders' spatial concentration, and to investigate the factors associated with the location outcomes of voucher recipients in Cleveland from 2005 to 2009. Analyzing voucher recipients' information from Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, this dissertation found meaningful results for the voucher program performances. Hotspot analysis indicated that location patterns of voucher recipients do not show even distribution over the study area. Additionally, voucher holders have clustered together and …

This dissertation, addresses intervention and phenomenological and participatory research methodology, through a lens of Gestalt Therapy Theory. The intervention, a wilderness-centered rites of passage, included experiential components of: (1) emersion in nature, (2) nature-based activities and challenges, (3) alone time in wilderness, (4) exposure to nature-based archetypes, elementals, and folklore, and (5) participation in community that supports connection through in ritual, ceremony, dialogue, and reflection. The participants included three early adolescent males and one adult male, a parent-participant. This normative analysis builds upon Ulrich Beck's world risk society theory to argue that the United States is making a shift of revolutionary proportions from an administrative state to a consumptive state. Public administration theory is assessed for its ability to address a consumptive state's unprecedented dynamics, e.g., accelerating technoscientific development and mega-hazards such as global warming. Qualitative evidence suggests that the field's adaptability has been limited by a continued, if generally unacknowledged, embrace of obsolete normative commitments such as to a politics-technoscience dichotomy, contempocentrism, and overconsumption. Using data from the National Center for Education Statistics (Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K)), the study utilized an individual growth model (Bryk & Raudenbush, 2002), the purpose of which was to assess the nature of progress in children's reading performance between kindergarten and 3rd grade and second, to determine the extent to which parental involvement predicts both the initial reading ability as well as the rate of progress. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) resulting from bomb blasts and explosions is common among military personnel. The effects of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep deprivation on the sensorimotor behavior and physiological mechanisms related to TBI are unknown. Thirty-two Long Evans rats were randomly assigned to REM sleep deprivation (RSD) with controlled cortical impact (CCI), social isolation (SI) with CCI, or normal housing (NH) with CCI or Sham. Two behavioral tasks [beam walk and bilateral tactile adhesive removal somatosensory (BTARS)] testing motor and sensory function were used to investigate recovery of function. The perception of fairness in performance appraisals (PA) is one of the most important factors and considered a criterion when reviewing PA effectiveness (Jacobs, Kafry, and Zedeck, 1980). In this particular study, I examined numerous variables in three main categories: interpersonal, procedural, and outcome fairness. Keep in mind that although these are three distinct categories, they are all inter-related. One hundred ninety-two employees, from the research and development section of a large retail company, voluntarily participated. The subsequent study examines variations of self-guided tour mediums in relation to telepresence, transportation, and satisfaction. Three conditions were used to explore the relationships. Those conditions were audio only, audio and visual, and map self-guided tours of a portion of Euclid Avenue adjacent to The audio condition yielded the highest mean scores of the three conditions on all analyses. Condition was found to significantly impact the report of 'worthwhile', a subscale of satisfaction. No other hypotheses resulted in significant findings. There are several intermingled factors that have been proposed to influence the results seen on student evaluations of teaching (SETs). Two suggested factors are workload and expected grade. Research has suggested both a positive and negative correlation with scores seen on SETs and workload levels. However, the direction of the relationship may depend upon whether the workload was perceived as "good" or "bad." This study examines the Bhutanese refugees, who are the newest group of refugees to arrive in the United States. It provides a detailed account of this community in the Cleveland-Akron area in Ohio. Research on this refugee population has only just begun, and they have been surveyed at an early time in the acculturation process. In 2007, their resettlement in the United States from camps in Nepal began, and by 2012, a total of 60,000 are expected to arrive in the United States. This paper examines the effect of poor school quality on neighborhood revitalization efforts in four Cleveland neighborhoods: Ohio City, Detroit Shoreway, Tremont and Downtown. The report employs survey research and real estate data analysis to examine the extent to which failing public schools encourage residents to leave the city for the suburbs, undermining efforts at revitalization. The research was particularly concerned with examining the effect on middle-class residents, or "residents of choice," who chose to live in Cleveland although other options are available to them financially. The purpose of this study is to design and evaluate the validity of the Poreh and Martincin Naming Tests, used to evaluate naming difficulties in demented populations. The Poreh and Martincin Naming Tests will be two new computerized tests used to examine anomia, a form of aphasia in which one has difficulty with naming. Both community and clinical groups were sampled, with each participant being administered the Boston Naming Test, the Poreh Naming Test, and Martincin Naming Test, and a task of verbal fluency. The purpose of this study was to collect normative data for a computer-assisted version of the Comalli Stroop Test, a commonly used neuropsychological measure. Additionally, the study was aimed at investigating the self-corrected errors on the Stroop Test, which have not previously been accounted for on the traditional test versions. Participants included one hundred and seventy two individuals from Cleveland State University and the community. Participants were administered computer-assisted versions of the Comalli Stroop Test and Trail Making Test. The present research was designed to evaluate the reliability and validity of a new measure for Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, namely the Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder Questionnaire (OCPDQ). One hundred and forty students at a Midwestern urban university were administered the OCPDQ as well as the Leyton Obsessional Inventory (LOI Cooper, 1970) and the Padua Inventory-Washington State University Revision (PI-WSUR Burns, Keortege, Formea, & Sternberger, 1996). The reliability and validity of the OCPDQ were analyzed and each of the eight subscales that corresponded to the eight criteria for OCPD were examined. This study examined the impact of verbal aggression toward students when recalling a hurtful incident between a teacher and a student. Specifically, this study investigated the relationship between students reported verbally aggressive incidents with teachers, self-esteem and student-teacher relational satisfaction. A total of 83 participants were surveyed to obtain recollections of verbally aggressive incidents and their reported impact. Verbally aggressive messages were represented by Infante's (1987) typologies of verbally aggressive messages, which included character attacks, competence attacks, background attacks, physical appearance attacks, maledictions, teasing, ridicule, threats, profanity and nonverbal emblems. Bosnian refugees, living in Cleveland Ohio, completed questionnaires during the months of March and April of 2009. This study sample consisted of 41 participants, 21 males and 20 females, who have lived in Bosnia for any duration of time during the civil war that took place between May of 1992 to November of 1995.
