In this thesis, an attempt has been made to sketch the progress in the treatment of mental disorders, from the earliest records to the present time. The introductory account of the conditions before the seventeenth century briefly considers the methods employed in Europe and Northern Africa prior to that date, while the main narrative is confined principally to the advancement achieved in Massachusetts since the Colonial days.
