Military Intervention: Why It Fails To Promote Democracy, Ashleigh N. Clayton
Military Intervention: Why It Fails To Promote Democracy, Ashleigh N. Clayton
OSR Journal of Student Research
International security concerns often circulate around regional stability and maintaining that balance. Foreign interventions are often undertaken by the international community when regional stability is tantamount to international stability. Interventions are often launched in for humanitarian assistance to protect citizens against violent autocratic regimes. Repeatedly, intervenors have attempted to assist the local population with regime transition, but changes to democracy rarely have lasting power. Modernization theory fully explains that the building blocks of democracy, semi-homogenous society, post-industrial economy and autonomous self-expressing citizens, must be present in the target country before intervention for democracy to take hold. The competing principals of …
Resilience And Post-Traumatic Growth In Parents Of Children With Special Needs, Elizabeth A. Sidener
Resilience And Post-Traumatic Growth In Parents Of Children With Special Needs, Elizabeth A. Sidener
OSR Journal of Student Research
From the day their child is diagnosed, parents of children with special needs are traveling on a journey of extremes. The stress parents experience can lead down many paths filled with stress, worries, and concerns as their constant companion. These conditions exert extreme pressure on parents and can lead to life-altering changes. Parents who are resilient and able to cope with continuous change will ultimately weave through the unknown to a place of positive growth known as post-traumatic growth. The research project was based on qualitative data obtained from interviews with eleven parents of children with special needs.

Reagan's Bluffing In The Cold War Game Helped Him End The Soviet Threat, Richard A. Contreras
Reagan's Bluffing In The Cold War Game Helped Him End The Soviet Threat, Richard A. Contreras
OSR Journal of Student Research
The Cold War between Russia and the United States neared its end when President Ronald Reagan took office in January of 1981. A worldwide policy of détente had been in effect over the previous decade which allowed the USSR to build up its arsenal of nuclear weapons. Reagan was determined to reverse this course, and by his derailing of détente and style of tough rhetoric, the Soviet government and newly-elected leader Mikhail Gorbachev had no choice but to give into Reagan’s capitulations. The U. S. leader’s bluff helped him to end the Cold War and nuclear threat— that communist regime …
Analysis On The Impact Of Driving Under The Influence In Inland Empire, California, Roger J. Chin
Analysis On The Impact Of Driving Under The Influence In Inland Empire, California, Roger J. Chin
OSR Journal of Student Research
Drunk driving is an issue that directly and indirectly affects everyone in society. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2010 there were approximately 2,715 driving fatalities involving alcohol or drugs in the state of California. In those 2,715 fatalities, 1,848 involved alcohol (“California Counties,” 2011). Driving Under the Influence (DUI) is a serious issue in the Inland Empire because out of the 58 counties in California, San Bernardino County and Riverside County consistently rank as some of the counties with the most DUI fatalities.
This study analyzed the significant reduction in the number of DUI related fatalities …
The Face That Launched A Thousand Ships: Helen Of Troy In The Poetry Of Atwood And Tufts, Alea Walstrom
The Face That Launched A Thousand Ships: Helen Of Troy In The Poetry Of Atwood And Tufts, Alea Walstrom
OSR Journal of Student Research
This paper considers the transformation of Greek myth over time, how character’s attributes change over time, and ultimately how contemporary poets employ these myths. The myth of focus in the paper is that of Helen of Troy and the depiction of her character throughout the many years and variations of the myth. Her character is then considered in the contemporary feminist poetry of Carol Tufts and Margaret Atwood.
The Role Of The Prison-Industrial Complex In Demilitarization, Corporate Outsourcing, & Immigration Policy, Shellie Anna Shimmel
The Role Of The Prison-Industrial Complex In Demilitarization, Corporate Outsourcing, & Immigration Policy, Shellie Anna Shimmel
OSR Journal of Student Research
The traditional system of justice in the United States, based on the goals of retribution, incapacitation, rehabilitation, deterrence, and restitution, has been replaced with a corporate model of mass punishment based on profits, expediency, and the exploitation of free labor. This corporation is known as the “Prison- Industrial Complex,” and is made up of an enormous, interweaving system of correctional institutions, profit-driven corporations, and politicians (Davis, 1998; Schlosser, 1998). Some question whether the creators of the Prison-Industrial Complex could have predicted or anticipated the outcome of their actions (Reinarman & Levine, 2004). I will show their actions were in fact …

Perceived Social Norms And Health Behaviors: Are College Drinking Behaviors Mediated By University Attachment?, John C. Wheeler
Perceived Social Norms And Health Behaviors: Are College Drinking Behaviors Mediated By University Attachment?, John C. Wheeler
OSR Journal of Student Research
The purpose of this study was to assess school attachment in college students and alcohol use. High perceptions of peer alcohol use were expected to be positively correlated with rates of individual student use. Also, as students reported higher rates of attachment to their university, rates of alcohol use would decrease. Furthermore, it was expected that affiliation with a fraternity or sorority would alter the relationship between university attachment and alcohol use. Existing data from LaChausse’s (2012) CSUSB Student Health Survey was used; 311 participants completed the survey, which included measures of current alcohol and other drug use, perceived CSUSB …
Microsatellite Analysis Of Population Structure In The Santa Ana Speckled Dace (Rhinichthys Osculus): Conservation And Evolution, Stacey Nerkowski
Microsatellite Analysis Of Population Structure In The Santa Ana Speckled Dace (Rhinichthys Osculus): Conservation And Evolution, Stacey Nerkowski
OSR Journal of Student Research
Geographic isolation and habitat fragmentation can cause a population to undergo independent evolutionary trajectories. Stream dwelling vertebrates such as the minnows belonging to the Cyprinidae family, one of the most genetically variable and geographically distributed groups, are excellent models for examining the genetic effects of population isolation and substructure. Rhinichthys osculus, a freshwater minnow, is a local species of concern that inhabits the Santa Ana and San Gabriel watershed systems within the Southern California region. 23 polymorphic microsatellite loci were characterized and identified for Rhinichthys osculus in conjunction with the Savannah River Ecology Lab. These microsatellite loci have been visualized …

OSR Journal of Student Research
This study evaluates Wells Fargo Corporation’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategy. It employs a qualitative methodology using the instrumental case study approach, within which the broad research question is raised: How does the Wells Fargo Corporation strategize for, and implement, corporate social responsibility? Our findings revealed that Wells Fargo has a solid, well-integrated CSR strategy deeply engrained within its culture, skillfully aligned with its capabilities and resources, and that this plan has been executed expertly within the corporation. We will communicate our findings to their leadership team in hopes they continue expansion of their CSR strategies and recommend they consider seeking …
