Age And Roles On The Family Farm, Cassie Chambers
Age And Roles On The Family Farm, Cassie Chambers
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
Age is a factor that has been analyzed in the workforce for quite some time now. The aging process is universal and found in daily lives throughout the work force or labor market, but some factors of age are different in the agriculture industry. This paper aims to acknowledge and explore the aging process specifically found in the agriculture industry. The key concepts of this paper have been broken into four different topics. These topics include youth roles on the farm, mid-adult roles on the farm, older adult roles on the farm, and public policy implications dealing with the agriculture …

How Sweet It Is: Fellowship And Continuity In A Church-Based Fall Prevention Program With African American Elders In The Northeastern United States, Michelle L. Ramirez, Cedric H. Jones Jr., Carol Maritz, Donna Jensen
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
Deaths from unintentional injuries are the seventh leading cause of death among older adults and falls account for the largest percentage of these deaths, with individuals aged ≥85 particularly vulnerable. Physical activity can reduce frailty and prevent falls; however, many elders are not physically active and women, ethnic minorities, and those with low education levels are the least active. Moreover, experiences of racial discrimination can lead to increased stress and unhealthy adaptive behaviors, and the cumulative effects of age and race related stressors have been shown to negatively impact the physical and mental health of elderly African Americans. Thus, participation …

The Aged Care Crisis In Australia’S Covid-19 Success Story: A Commentary, Cymbeline Buhler, Nidhi Wali, Charles Ball, Supriya Gurung, Spyros Schismenos
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
The world took a beating from COVID-19, with no nation spared. Australia’s response to the pandemic has been recognized as particularly successful, with the comparatively small total of COVID-19 related fatalities. However, these achievements in controlling the virus and keeping the economy buoyant are contrasted by significant failures, particularly the Federal and state governments’ inability to contain the outbreak within the aged care sector. This commentary forms an understanding of the COVID-19 outbreak in Australia’s aged care sector, drawing from articles published in the ‘The Australian’ newspaper. We focus on priorities, responses and management at different levels, observing subsequent impacts, …
Humans (Really) Are Animals: Picture-Book Reading Influences 5-Year-Old Urban Children’S Construal Of The Relation Between Humans And Non-Human Animals, Sandra Waxman, Patricia Herrmann, Jennifer Woodring, Douglas Medin
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
What is the relation between humans and non-human animals? From a biological perspective, we view humans as one species among many, but in the fables and films we create for children, we often offer an anthropocentric perspective, imbuing non-human animals with human-like characteristics. What are the consequences of these distinctly different perspectives on children’s reasoning about the natural world? Some have argued that children universally begin with an anthropocentric perspective and that acquiring a biological perspective requires a basic conceptual change (Carey, 1985). But recent work reveals that this anthropocentric perspective, evidenced in urban 5-year-olds, is not evident in 3-year-olds …
Pseudo-Patriotism, Polemics, And Propaganda: European ‘Indianness’ And Contemporary German Populism, Dagmar Wernitznig
Pseudo-Patriotism, Polemics, And Propaganda: European ‘Indianness’ And Contemporary German Populism, Dagmar Wernitznig
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
This article highlights and explores new nuances of colonialisms that can be witnessed in German populist politics in conjunction with public discourses about migration and refugeedom. In their xenophobic aversion towards aliens, ultra-nationalist organizations and parties in Germany pervert the colonial trauma of Native American peoples by projecting it onto their own existence. By drawing analogies between their own lives and the plight of Native American expulsion or forceful assimilation since the arrival of the first European settlers, right-wing individuals and groups perceive themselves as a vanishing tribe that is threatened with extinction, caused by Arabic and African newcomers …

Anthropocentrism: More Than Just A Misunderstood Problem, Helen Kopnina, Haydn Washington, Bron Taylor, John Piccolo
Anthropocentrism: More Than Just A Misunderstood Problem, Helen Kopnina, Haydn Washington, Bron Taylor, John Piccolo
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Anthropocentrism, in its original connotation in environmental ethics, is the belief that value is human-centered and that all other beings are means to human ends. Environmentally-concerned authors have argued that anthropocentrism is ethically wrong and at the root of ecological crises. Some environmental ethicists argue, however, that critics of anthropocentrism are misguided or even misanthropic. They contend: first that criticism of anthropocentrism can be counterproductive and misleading by failing to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate human interests. Second, that humans differ greatly in their environmental impacts, and consequently, addressing human inequalities should be a precondition for environmental protection. Third, since …

California North Coast Vehicle And Human Use Beach Survey Of False Klamath Cove, Ruthie A. Maloney, John W. Corbett
California North Coast Vehicle And Human Use Beach Survey Of False Klamath Cove, Ruthie A. Maloney, John W. Corbett
IdeaFest: Interdisciplinary Journal of Creative Works and Research from Cal Poly Humboldt
This study looks to provide accurate, base-line-data of north coast beach usage and will identify activities in the vicinity of False Klamath Cove (FKC) bird sanctuary, which is a giant smokestack rock bird rookery of some 40,000 seabirds called False Klamath Rock. A research review showed that the north coast does not have adequate statistical information for FKC nor on other north coast beach areas for beach use. In the absence of such local data other beach studies are used. Most of these surveys are in beach areas of Southern California. Such extrapolations often result in an overestimation of beach …
A Clash Of Cultures: The Struggle Of Native Americans To Participate In Traditional Ecological Knowledge And Western Science Under California’S Marine Life Protection Act, John W. Corbett, Ruthie A. Maloney
A Clash Of Cultures: The Struggle Of Native Americans To Participate In Traditional Ecological Knowledge And Western Science Under California’S Marine Life Protection Act, John W. Corbett, Ruthie A. Maloney
IdeaFest: Interdisciplinary Journal of Creative Works and Research from Cal Poly Humboldt
This article comprehensively details the culture clash that took place between Native Americans, the North Group Science Panel, and the Science Advisory Team (SAT) involved in the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA). In 1999, the California Legislature passed the Marine Life Protection Act to create a statewide, science-driven network of marine reserves along the 1,100 miles of the California coast. The MLPA was meant to protect marine areas from overharvesting, and an initiative was formed to create a state marine reserve system advised by regional science panels. The science panel, a public body, decided that Native Americans science was not …
Cannabis Tourism And The Community: Resident Attitudes In Humboldt County, California, Ara Pachmayer, Reed Switzer, Shawn Reilly
Cannabis Tourism And The Community: Resident Attitudes In Humboldt County, California, Ara Pachmayer, Reed Switzer, Shawn Reilly
IdeaFest: Interdisciplinary Journal of Creative Works and Research from Cal Poly Humboldt
Resident attitudes towards cannabis tourism in Humboldt County, California were investigated in this exploratory study. The primary purpose was to understand if the variables used to explain resident attitudes towards tourism would show similar patterns when applied to cannabis tourism. The study included a questionnaire distributed to adult residents of Humboldt County and was conducted between March and August 2017, just prior to recreational cannabis sales beginning in California. Correlations and crosstabs were performed on the data. While personal benefit was found to have an impact on resident attitudes towards cannabis tourism, other variables indicate mixed support which suggests that …
