Rebelling Against Lawful Authority? The Vaccination Controversy During The Smallpox Epidemic At Muncie, Indiana, 1893, Kelly Hacker Jones

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

This article will explore the ways in which compulsory vaccination was resisted or protested in Muncie, Indiana, during an outbreak of smallpox in that city in the summer and fall of 1893. It will examine previous analyses of anti-vaccination sentiment at the end of the nineteenth century, discuss the actions taken in Muncie to prevent the spread of smallpox, and describe the ways in which Muncie citizens resisted compulsory vaccination. This article will also trace the spread of anti-vaccinationist sentiment across the state and outline the arguments used for and against compulsory vaccination. A gap in education outcomes exists in Indiana for female and male students. The gap in educational outcomes can be seen in the standardized tests that are a requirement for students to take as a part of their education. In Indiana, students in K–12 education are required to take the ISTEP+ exam in grades 3–8, and in grade 10 as a graduation requirement. Indiana had 292 school districts or corporations, which were used in this analysis to determine the gap in educational outcomes. Precipitating Factors Influencing Obesity Rates In Indiana, Jeffrey Allen

Nearly two-thirds of the American population is now overweight, and the rate of obesity has doubled since the early 1960s. The state of Indiana has elected to forgo Medicaid expansion available through the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), which includes funding specific to obesity and obesity-related comorbidities. Utilizing the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation 2014 Health Statistics, causative obesity factors found in current research literature is examined for Indiana’s 92 counties. The variables are examined to determine significant correlation with adult levels of obesity. This paper looks at the history of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences (IASS) and the organization’s contributions to the field. Through a careful examination of documents, newsletters, minutes, and correspondence, a rich account unfolds, demonstrating unceasing commitment to advancing research in multiple disciplines. The IASS built bridges between and among colleges and universities across the state, as well as with state institutions, professional associations, libraries, and high schools. For 85 years, it has promoted camaraderie and respect and has succeeded in fostering support for all of the social sciences.
