Reconsidering Solidarity In The Mormon Village, Todd L. Goodsell Dec 1998

Reconsidering Solidarity In The Mormon Village, Todd L. Goodsell

Theses and Dissertations

In what became a classic rural community study, Lowry Nelson concluded in his first Mormon village series in the 1920's that the Mormon village is characterized by an extraordinary sense of solidarity. He claimed that this strong solidarity can be primarily explained by four factors of the social group: leadership, conflict, cooperation, and ideology. After resurveying the Mormon village in 1950, he concluded that solidarity had declined. However, a few problems become apparent to the present researcher looking back upon Nelson's findings. One of them is that Nelson never had a clear definition of solidarity to begin with. Another is …

Pareto Optimality And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds Aug 1998

Pareto Optimality And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

In 1959, James M. Buchanan criticized the collectivist misuse of Pareto optimality by the "new welfare economists" and made a first attempt to extend that individualist concept into the political realm. Over the following three decades he further developed his political application of Pareto’s insight to buttress an essentially economic analysis of political exchange that would justify the processes of constitutional democracy in the same way Pareto efficiency justifies free markets. In this paper I will explain why Buchanan’s particular formulations will not work and propose a more comprehensive solution that accomplishes Buchanan’s announced purpose. I will argue that a …

Meaning In Family Mealtime, Ardyth Gunnell Cannon Aug 1998

Meaning In Family Mealtime, Ardyth Gunnell Cannon

Theses and Dissertations

This project asks families what mealtime together means to them. The topic of family mealtime appears comparatively infrequently in academic literature, and any meaning that families associate with mealtime has seldom been studied directly. This particular research investigates meanings of the understudied mealtime event by interviewing three or four generations of family members from five different families. Attention is paid to emerging standards of rigor for qualitative research, namely applicability through the selection of families who have a history of practicing a family mealtime tradition, truth value in faithfully representing the interviewees perceptions, and auditability by including detail of the …

Since Joseph Smith's Time: Lexical Semantic Shifts In The Book Of Mormon, Renee Bangerter Aug 1998

Since Joseph Smith's Time: Lexical Semantic Shifts In The Book Of Mormon, Renee Bangerter

Theses and Dissertations

In the years since Joseph Smith completed the translation of the Book of Mormon, the English language has changed; some common phraseologies and word meanings are dissimilar to today's. Often, in reading the Book of Mormon, we impose our current definitions onto terms that in 1830 had a different meaning. Our interpretation of these words, as well as the passages in which they are found, is skewed by our modern definitions. These words, when they occur in the Book of Mormon, demonstrate dialectal and obsolete senses. In the case of some words, the dialectal or obsolete sense is so far …

Hans Christian Andersen's Statue In Lincoln Park, Chicago, Birgit F. Larsen Jan 1998

Hans Christian Andersen's Statue In Lincoln Park, Chicago, Birgit F. Larsen

The Bridge

I barely noticed that they placed me in a flag-draped automobile and that, accompanied by an escort, it progressed slowly down a wide avenue, while crowds of people on the sidewalks, children and adults, cheered enthusiastically. --We drove through a large park, many times larger than Kongens Have ("The King's Garden", a park in Copenhagen), and here, too, there were rows upon rows of people, and finally we stopped in front of a statue - and lo and behold, it was myself, and looked just like me, sitting with a young swan at my feet. -- Then my heart melted, …

The Psychology Of A Mermaid: Understanding The Danish Psyche, Karen Lassen

The Bridge

"Way out in the ocean, the water is as blue as the petals of

the most beautiful cornflower and as clear as the cleanest

glass, but it is very deep, deeper than an anchor cable can

reach; many church steeples would have to be placed one on

top of the other in order to stretch from the bottom up to the

surface of the water. Down there live the Merpeople."

Danebod: A Tradition Of Strength And Spirit, Ann Svendsen

The Bridge

The Danes have always expressed their joys by having

festivals. Fastelavns (Fest before Lent) is celebrated on

Shrove Tuesday . The Fifth of June, a traditional celebration,

remembers the day Denmark got its first constitution and

became a democracy. America's patriotism and freedom are

celebrated on the Fourth of July. The bounties of agriculture

are celebrated with the annual Harvest Festival. Christmas is

celebrated not only in the majesty and solemnity of a candlelight

church service but by dancing around a huge tree when

the children also recieve bags of candy, apples and nuts,

and gifts.

Twenty Years Old, Arnold N. Bodtker Jan 1998

Twenty Years Old, Arnold N. Bodtker

The Bridge

It was 20 years ago thst the Danish American Heritage Society (DAHS) came upon the scene. I used the term " came upon the scene" advisedly. Reflecting on the circumstances and discussions that led to the formation of the Society makes the term seem appropriate. It had been noted from time to time in the decases before that when Scandinavian American historians and writers assembled and the role of the Scandinavian immigrant was considered, The Danish Americans were conspicuous by their absence. In contrast, the Norwegian American Historical Association was formed in 1925, and has had a distinguished existence since then. …

Sophus K. Winther, Barbara Howard Meldrum Jan 1998

Sophus K. Winther, Barbara Howard Meldrum

The Bridge

Like Wallace Stegner, Sophus Keith Winther feels uncomfortable with the label "Western writer." For Stegner, the label too often smacks of horse-opera: outworn myths that lacked historical basis to begin with. Winther's objection has less to do with the subject matter, more to do with themes and character: regionalism-whether Western or Southers, or Wessex-too often exploits superficial traits of locality, whereas enduring literature reveals the universal drama of the human condition ("The Limits of Regionalism"). Stegner and Winther agree, however, that a writer should begin with what he or she knows best; if one's experience is Western, then Western regionalism …

Breaking Ground In The Promised Land: Mary Lund's Letters Home To Denmark From Canada, March-September, 1926 Jan 1998

Breaking Ground In The Promised Land: Mary Lund's Letters Home To Denmark From Canada, March-September, 1926

The Bridge

I knew my Grandma Lund as a strong person. She was my Dad's mother, mary, the "tough" grandmaother my parents called on to babysit my older sister, Laurette, and me when they would travel for more than a few days. Mary Lund was a large person, a feature which worked against her in the years I knew her. Her legs were thick and chronic arthiritis did not allow her to walk without discomfort; she remained ever stoic, never complaining even as she winced in obvious pain. She insisted on respect for elder and a strict code of manners at the …

Oregon Danish Colony: Ethnic Assimilation In Junction City, 1902-1952, Gerald Rasmussen, Otto Larsen Jan 1998

Oregon Danish Colony: Ethnic Assimilation In Junction City, 1902-1952, Gerald Rasmussen, Otto Larsen

The Bridge

"A most desired place for Danish folks to settle." That

keynote launched the campaign to attract Danes to Junction

City. Who was the herald? What were the tidings?

The records are not particularly informative about A. C.

Nielsen. The Junction City Times only used the initials "A. C."

to refer to him. According to his great-grandson, Alfred

Christensen, his first name was Andreas and his middle

name was Christian, both common names in Denmark.

Family Generativity And Generative Counseling: Helping Families Keep Faith With The Next Generation, David C. Dollahite, Brent D. Slife, Alan J. Hawkins Jan 1998

Family Generativity And Generative Counseling: Helping Families Keep Faith With The Next Generation, David C. Dollahite, Brent D. Slife, Alan J. Hawkins

Faculty Publications

Counselors who are concerned with strengthening and healing relationships between generations can draw on the concept of generativity to assist them. This chapter invites counselors to grant a more prominent place for generativity in clinical work with families by (a) presenting the concept of family generativity as a logical extension of the generativity concept and (b) presenting some initial ideas on the new approach to clinical work designed to help families develop and sustain family generativity, which we call generative counseling. Generative counseling is illustrated by use of a clinical example, which is introduced briefly in a subsequent section …

Spanish Diphthongization As A Non-Derivational Phenomenon, David Eddington Jan 1998

Spanish Diphthongization As A Non-Derivational Phenomenon, David Eddington

Faculty Publications

In a previous study on derivational morphology (Eddington 1996), the alternation between the unstressed mid-vowels /e/ and lo/, and the stressed diphthongs /je/ and /we/ was seen to escape straigh tforward explanation in rule-based a nalyses. Diphthongization in Spanish was instead attributed to the influence of other lexical items which contain the same derivational suffix.

The purpose of the present study is twofold. First, an experiment was carried out to test the validity of the findings of the previous study. Spanish speakers completed a questionn aire in which they decided between neologisms containing mid-vowels or diphthongs (e.g. hielo 'ice'+ -azo …

Peer Contact Patterns, Parenting Practices, And Preschoolers’ Social Competence In China, Russia, And The United States, Craig H. Hart, Chongming Yang, David A. Nelson, Shenghua Jin, Nina Bazarskaya, Larry Nelson, Xinzi Wu, Peixia Wu Jan 1998

Peer Contact Patterns, Parenting Practices, And Preschoolers’ Social Competence In China, Russia, And The United States, Craig H. Hart, Chongming Yang, David A. Nelson, Shenghua Jin, Nina Bazarskaya, Larry Nelson, Xinzi Wu, Peixia Wu

Research over the past decade has focused on ways that parents enhance or constrain the quantity and quality of their children's interactions with peers outside of the immediate family context (e.g., Ladd and Hart 1992; Mize et al. 1995; profiles and Ladd 1994; Russell and Finnie 1990). Much of this work indicates that parenting works in concert with a host of personality, familial, and extra familial variables in ways that facilitate or diminish children's socially competent behavior with peers (Hart et al. 1997). This line of research is important given evidence suggesting that the quality of peer relations stemming from …

Overt And Relational Aggression In Russian Nursery-School-Age Children: Parenting Style And Marital Linkages, Craig H. Hart, David A. Nelson, Clyde C. Robinson, Susanne Frost Olson, Mary Kay Mcneilly-Choque Jan 1998

Overt And Relational Aggression In Russian Nursery-School-Age Children: Parenting Style And Marital Linkages, Craig H. Hart, David A. Nelson, Clyde C. Robinson, Susanne Frost Olson, Mary Kay Mcneilly-Choque

Faculty Publications

Maternal and paternal parenting styles and marital interactions linked in childhood aggressive behavior as described in Western psychological literature were measured in an ethnic Russian sample of 207 families of nursery-school-age children. Results corroborated and extended findings from Western samples. Maternal and paternal coercion, lack of responsiveness, and psychological control (for mothers only) were significantly correlated with children's overt aggression with peers. Less responsiveness (for mothers and fathers) and maternal coercion positively correlated with relational aggression. Some of these associations differed for boys versus girls. Marital conflict was also linked to more overt and relational aggression for boys. When entered …

The Orientation Toward Domestic Labor Questionnaire: Exploring Dual-Earner Wives' Sense Of Fairness About Family Work, Alan J. Hawkins, Christina M. Marshall, Sarah M. Allen Jan 1998

The Orientation Toward Domestic Labor Questionnaire: Exploring Dual-Earner Wives' Sense Of Fairness About Family Work, Alan J. Hawkins, Christina M. Marshall, Sarah M. Allen

Faculty Publications

This study explored the psychometric properties of the Orientation Toward Domestic Labor Questionnaire (ODL-Q) with a sample of 622 dual-earner wives. Adequate internal consistency reliability was obtained for most of the construct in the ODL-Q. In addition, construct validity for the ODL-Q was provided with multiple regression and discriminant analyses of the constructs' relationships to wives' sense of fairness about family work. The ODL-Q scales accounted for 57% of the variance in wives' sense of fairness. Effective communication about domestic labor (expressions of appreciation, sympathetic listening, mutual decision making) was by far the most powerful predictor and discriminator of fairness. …

Normative Data On The College Adjustment Scales From A University Counseling Center, Timothy B. Smith, Mark A. Nafziger, Gwenna C. Couillard Jan 1998

Normative Data On The College Adjustment Scales From A University Counseling Center, Timothy B. Smith, Mark A. Nafziger, Gwenna C. Couillard

Faculty Publications

Greater numbers of students with increasingly serious psychological problems are served each year by college counseling centers. This fact, coupled with the threat of dwindling resources, underscores the need to improve evaluation procedures and accountability for counseling center services. This includes the identification of an appropriate assessment device, supported by adequate psychometric data, that addresses the variety of problems faced by college students. The College Adjustment Scales (CAS; Anton & Reed, 1991) is a multidimensional inventory designed specifically for use in college and university counseling centers. It consists of 108 items that yield scores on nine scales: Anxiety, Depression, Suicidal …

Learning To Learn: The Training Of Missionaries In Language Learning Strategies At The Missionary Training Center, D. Brian Kohler Jan 1998

Learning To Learn: The Training Of Missionaries In Language Learning Strategies At The Missionary Training Center, D. Brian Kohler

Theses and Dissertations

Language learning strategies (LLS) are specific actions, behaviors, steps, or techniques that learners use to improve their rate and level of L2 development. This thesis details the development and validation of a LLS training program designed to measure if training in LLS increases LDS missionaries' awareness of LLS as potential language learning tools. Specifically, it explores the question as to whether missionaries trained in LLS use and intend to use LLS more frequently, more appropriately, and with a greater range than those not trained in LLS.

The development of the LLS training program involved selecting a set of 48 specific …
