Chasing Gold: Analyzing Opium Cultivation In Afghanistan And Its Alternatives, Jack Cameron

This paper reviews the history of counternarcotics efforts in Afghanistan from 1950 to the present. Each chapter will specifically examine a program or strategy used to suppress the cultivation of opium. It will then derive both the successes and failures of each moment in history. Using these lessons, the essay will lastly examine saffron as an alternative to opium. Though saffron has a high start-up cost and sizeable time investment, as the essay argues, these costs are actually worth it. The Closing Of The Gates "The Politics Of Xenophobia In Immigrant Nations", Graham P. Nau

The following study seeks to explain the reason for increasing immigration restriction in countries with strong histories of immigration. The main country of focus is the United States, with Argentina and Canada analyzed in comparison. After exploring the conventional answers of: right-wing populism, economic explanations, and security concerns, the study makes the argument that a history of deep-rooted xenophobia is the best explanation for increasing immigration restriction in all three countries of analysis.

Domestic politics in Latin America since the end of the Cold War has been characterized by the complicated process of coming to terms with its violent past. For years, the United States has had the power to aid in investigations into crimes committed during the Latin American dictatorships of the 1970s and 1980s. The US was so deeply involved in the dictatorships that thousands of pages of evidence on the crimes committed are available in CIA, Military, and Presidential archives. In this senior project, I examine the United States military’s controversial use of Hawaiian land. Following the islands’ annexation to the United States in 1898, a growing number of political and legal disputes concerning the use of Hawaiian lands for military training purposes have arisen between members of the native Hawaiian community and the United States military. As both the island of Kaho’olawe and the Pōhakuloa Training Area have shown, the military’s management of these lands has left much to be desired as the sites have suffered significant cultural and environmental damages. "We Can't Fix Their Idiot Lives:" Juvenile Treatment Programs In An Era Of Neoliberal Social Abandonment, Morganne Loach Sample

Using two months of interviews and fieldwork at Youth Care Corp., a non-residential treatment program for court mandated youth, this project serves as a case study and critique of theorized structural shifts around and within the crime control apparatuses of the U.S., such as the expanding privatization of welfare, increases in risk management thinking, and the abandonment of the rehabilitative ideal. In this paper I argue that a combination of these forces, in particular the de-funding of welfare services and move away from deviant rehabilitation, has created a tension within Youth Care Corp. between its institutional focus on the responsibilizing …
