Celebration of Learning
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is thought to involve unusually strong associative memories between the intense fear felt during a traumatic experience and other environmental cues present at the time of the trauma. Our study uses an animal model to investigate social contact, one of the factors that can impact fear responses, to learn more about possible risk factors or interventions that may be relevant to humans who may experience PTSD. Freezing, or the cessation of movement, is a common fear response observed in laboratory animals in the presence of a perceived threat. We tested whether or not the degree of …

Investigating Trust And Trust Recovery In Human-Robot Interactions, Abigail L. Thomson
Celebration of Learning
As artificial intelligence and robotics continue to advance and be used in increasingly different functions and situations, it is important to look at how these new technologies will be used. An important factor in how a new resource will be used is how much it is trusted. This experiment was conducted to examine people’s trust in a robotic assistant when completing a task, how mistakes affect this trust, and if the levels of trust exhibited with a robot assistant were significantly different than if the assistant were human. The task was to watch a computer simulation of the three-cup monte …

Riding In Circles: Horse(Wo)Manship In The American Saddlebred Community, Brianna Meyer
Celebration of Learning
Not many people know about the very small yet very dynamic sect of intense sport culture of the American Saddlebred show horse. Even those who do could always learn more, since, like any subculture, it constantly evolves and changes through time. This paper outlines the historical changes since the advent of Saddlebred showing with a focus on female involvement and feminist revolution. Gender has been an important but relatively unseen factor within the community itself—female participants today do not know the history of female involvement. But based on an emergence of women professionals and amateurs in the past 50 years, …

Hello Keikan-Chan: The Implications Of Female Japanese Police Mascots, Gage Meyers
Asian Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
The concept of yuru-kyara, a mascot character designed by towns and prefectures to boost tourism, has been a trend in Japan for two decades. Overtime Japanese police adopted the trend and created their own mascot characters to improve public relations. For the decade since the first police mascot was created only male police mascots were created and it was not until the late 90s early 2000s that female police mascots were being made. These female mascots were not original characters, but rather female counterparts of the already existing male police mascots. This paper explores the cultural, political, and social …

2016-2017: Scott County, Iowa and the Scott County Health Department
Scott County, IA is facing a community lead poisoning problem, much like other counties in the state. One of these are Black Hawk County, northwest of Scott. Black Hawk County approached the lead poisoning problem by partnering with organizations including the University of Northern Iowa, the Iowa Poison Control Center, and a multitude of medical groups. Funding, procedures for action, and education were also factors in assessing the lead problem. Black Hawk County’s number of lead poisonings decreased after approaching the problem, while Scott County’s problem worsened. By using similar methods, we hope that Scott County's lead problem will also …

Exploring Alternative Funding Methods For The Lead Remediation Program In Scott County, Iowa, Dr. John Delaney, Brittany A. Poynor
2016-2017: Scott County, Iowa and the Scott County Health Department
Lead poisoning is an environmental as well as social problem. Areas with more older housing and higher rates of poverty are also the areas with the most lead poisoned children. Though the United States banned the use of lead paint in in 1978 and lead poisoning is preventable, lead poisoning remains a public health problem. Homes built before 1978 may pose risk of lead paint exposure, but of special concern to Scott County are the number of homes built before 1950.
Scott County, Iowa is home to some of the oldest housing units in the U.S. Iowa ranks fifth among …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Binge Eating Disorder In Adolescence, Rebekah Gohl
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Binge Eating Disorder In Adolescence, Rebekah Gohl
Psychology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Eating disorders are among the most prevalent psychological disorders for the adolescent population. The onset of binge eating disorder (BED) occurs in late adolescence to early adulthood and affects numerous individuals who struggle with identity formation and social development. This paper critiques the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in treating binge eating disorder in adolescence. While evidence on the efficacy of this treatment is limited, all research supports the use of cognitive behavioral therapy in treating binge eating disorder. More research on treatment of binge eating disorder must be conducted as adolescence is a crucial time for identity formation.
Evaluating Trophic Rewilding As A Conservation Technique, Aaron Sieve
Evaluating Trophic Rewilding As A Conservation Technique, Aaron Sieve
Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
The focus for this paper is to define specifically trophic rewilding, determine its efficacy as a conservation technique, and explore ways to lessen one of its key limitations. Trophic rewilding is the conservation technique whereby an extirpated keystone species or ecosystem engineer is reintroduced into a degraded habitat to restore ecological function by triggering trophic cascades. The technique is evaluated through analysis of the concepts of trophic cascades and ecosystem engineers. Key limitations of trophic rewilding are that a lack of population control in reintroduced may cause issues, that many times not enough is known about trophic cascades to be …
An Evaluation Of Gridded Temperature Products And Their Effectiveness In Modeling Small Scale Ambient Temperatures, Barrie Chileen
An Evaluation Of Gridded Temperature Products And Their Effectiveness In Modeling Small Scale Ambient Temperatures, Barrie Chileen
Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
The use of remotely sensed temperature products is becoming increasingly prevalent in research on climate change due to their accessibility, low cost, and spatial and temporal coverage. These studies use gridded products to model near-surface ambient temperatures as many often lack the resources and time to conduct on- site temperature measurements. Previous studies have compared the effectiveness of these gridded products against each other and weather station data (Vavrus et al. 2015, McEvoy et al. 2014). However, little research has been done to determine the effectiveness of these gridded products in modeling ambient climate. For this study, 65 LogTag temperature …

Nepal : Healthcare And Sanitation Issues Resulting From Frequent Natural Disasters In Nepal, Jake Lauderdale
Global Public Health
This Public Health Brief calls to attention the issues plaguing Nepal as a result of both frequent natural disasters and poor healthcare infrastructure. The geographic characteristics of Nepal are shown to be a major factor in the damage and aftermath of natural disasters such as earthquakes. Due to its status as a poor and economically weakened country, Nepal must rely heavily on outside aid in order to alleviate the pressure of frequently occurring natural disasters. Despite work being done by several Non-Governmental Organizations, Nepal has a long way to go before they are able to independently manage the outcomes of …

Burundi is located near the African great lakes region of East Africa. This country is one of the poorest and hungriest countries throughout the world because of this they are facing multiple problems with communicable disease. These families are seeing a reduction in the amount of water available to them and based on this they are receiving water from external sources such as wells and lakes. Most of the water throughout Burundi is contaminated with Phytoplankton which increase cholera outbreaks in this area. It has also been shown that uranium impacts the water throughout the wells and lakes. Both of …
