Gimme Shelter: Homeless Services Providers' Assessments Of The Effectiveness Of Housing First Programs In Portland, Maine, Eric Kneeland Jan 2016

Gimme Shelter: Homeless Services Providers' Assessments Of The Effectiveness Of Housing First Programs In Portland, Maine, Eric Kneeland

Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on the Housing First model of addressing chronic homelessness in the state of Maine, primarily in the city of Portland. Preble Street, an organization based in Portland, operates a Housing First program called Logan Place, which houses 30 chronically homeless adults. I interviewed eight members of the staff at Preble Street using a semi-structured interview style: three caseworkers, three administrators, and two administrators with casework responsibilities. The major themes that were revealed from the interviews are the successes of the program, the ongoing challenges of securing funding to continue the program's successes, the role of public perception …

Enhancing Poor And Middle Class Earning Capacity With Stock Acquisition Mortgage Loans, Robert Ashford, Demetri Kantarelis Jan 2016

Enhancing Poor And Middle Class Earning Capacity With Stock Acquisition Mortgage Loans, Robert Ashford, Demetri Kantarelis

Economics, Finance and International Business Department Faculty Works

In this article, to enhance the earning capacity of poor and middle class people (who in recent years have suffered a substantial decline in their share of national income), we propose a new loan which facilitates acquisition of financial capital with the future earnings of financial capital acquired and we discuss some possible strengths and weaknesses of such an approach. According to our analysis, there is an undeveloped market for the broader distribution of future capital income in which the price (cost) paid for acquisition of securities to realize such future capital income plays a crucial role. More specifically, we …

Incentive-Compatibility And Coasean Invariance In Property Affairs, Emily Anderson, Demetri Kantarelis Jan 2016

Incentive-Compatibility And Coasean Invariance In Property Affairs, Emily Anderson, Demetri Kantarelis

Economics, Finance and International Business Department Faculty Works

We make an attempt to broaden the Coase invariance theorem by including asymmetry of information. Given the probability distributions of strong and weak types of property-disputing parties, we show how incentive-compatible legal rules may be constructed to eliminate adverse selection and moral hazard. The modified theorem we propose may be stated as follows: when transaction costs (such as search costs, bargaining costs and enforcement costs) are zero, incentive-compatible deals, mediated by the legal system, give rise to efficient allocation of resources, irrespective of the legal assignment of property rights. Additionally, we review the Coasean underpinnings of basic property law as …

A Measure Of Net Dependency Between The Economies Of The Usa And Its Major Trading Partners, Demetri Kantarelis Jan 2016

A Measure Of Net Dependency Between The Economies Of The Usa And Its Major Trading Partners, Demetri Kantarelis

Economics, Finance and International Business Department Faculty Works

How interdependent are the economies of the USA and its trading partners and how does their net dependency evolve through time? In an attempt to answer these questions, a measure of bilateral net dependency between the USA and a trading partner nation (i) is proposed where net dependency is defined as the difference between USA’s dependency on i minus i’s dependency on the USA. Dependency between the US and a trading partner is measured as the ratio of trade between them over respective GDP plus imports from the trading partner with imports weighted by a degree of importance. Based on …

Indicators Of Gendered Control Over Agricultural Resources: A Guide For Agricultural Policy And Research, Smriti Rao Jan 2016

Indicators Of Gendered Control Over Agricultural Resources: A Guide For Agricultural Policy And Research, Smriti Rao

Economics and Global Studies Department Faculty Works

Although the importance of women’s contribution to the agricultural sector in developing countries is now widely acknowledged, there is little systematic evidence on how gender gaps in control over resources have changed over time in response to agricultural policy and technological interventions. In particular, few large-scale, national-level studies examine these effects for developing countries. This is surprising in light of the pervasive impact of agricultural technology and policy innovation on gender differences in control over productive resources for agriculture. Women are farmers and agricultural laborers in every part of the world. They are often responsible for the storage and processing …

School Size And Youth Violence: The Mediating Role Of School Connectedness, Adam M. Volungis Jan 2016

School Size And Youth Violence: The Mediating Role Of School Connectedness, Adam M. Volungis

Psychology Department Faculty Works

Youth violence continues to be considered a public health concern in the United States. This study utilized longitudinal data to test the possible mediating and moderating effects of school connectedness between school size and youth violence. The participants were obtained from Waves I and II of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), a nationally representative ongoing survey of 7th through 12th grade students in the United States. A series of multilevel models using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM6) procedures were compared. Results did not support school connectedness as a moderator; however, results did support school connectedness as a …

Impairments Of Social Motor Synchrony Evident In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Paula Fitzpatrick, Jean A. Frazier, David M. Cochran, Teresa Mitchell, Caitlin Coleman, R. C. Schmidt Jan 2016

Impairments Of Social Motor Synchrony Evident In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Paula Fitzpatrick, Jean A. Frazier, David M. Cochran, Teresa Mitchell, Caitlin Coleman, R. C. Schmidt

Psychology Department Faculty Works

Social interactions typically involve movements of the body that become synchronized over time and both intentional and spontaneous interactional synchrony have been found to be an essential part of successful human interaction. However, our understanding of the importance of temporal dimensions of social motor synchrony in social dysfunction is limited. Here, we used a pendulum coordination paradigm to assess dynamic, process-oriented measures of social motor synchrony in adolescents with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Our data indicate that adolescents with ASD demonstrate less synchronization in both spontaneous and intentional interpersonal coordination. Coupled oscillator modeling suggests that ASD participants assembled …

The Benefits Of Lunch Breaks, Joseph Dipilato Iv Jan 2016

The Benefits Of Lunch Breaks, Joseph Dipilato Iv

Honors Theses

The question as to whether or not taking breaks from work is beneficial for improving employee productivity has not been thoroughly examined, as it is still a fairly new topic of discussion. This thesis project sought to compile evidence to support the claim that breaks are indeed useful for this purpose. A review of the literature found not only information that directly supports this assertion, but also information that shows the numerous negative side-effects of not taking breaks from work. Certain workplace factors that influence break-taking behaviors were also discussed. For the purpose of providing modern-day companies several means by …

Conquering Invisible Elephants: The Effects Of Family Involvement On Adolescent Recovery From Mental Illness, Christina Ditolla Jan 2016

Conquering Invisible Elephants: The Effects Of Family Involvement On Adolescent Recovery From Mental Illness, Christina Ditolla

Honors Theses

This paper explored the extent to which current treatments for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN), conduct disorder (CD), and depression have involved families in therapy. Various past and present therapies for all three adolescent disorders were reviewed and effective treatment components of family therapy were identified and compared across the treatment approaches. A review of the literature indicated that family therapy was more effective and beneficial for the adolescent patient than individual treatments not involving families. While individualized treatments helped to improve adolescent symptomatology, family therapy provided a more comprehensive approach as it focused not only on symptom reduction but …

Uses Of Twitter And Citizen Journalism: A Comparison Of Press Reaction To The September 11th Terrorist Attacks And The Boston Marathon Bombings, Sarah Johansson Jan 2016

Uses Of Twitter And Citizen Journalism: A Comparison Of Press Reaction To The September 11th Terrorist Attacks And The Boston Marathon Bombings, Sarah Johansson

Honors Theses

The microblogging site, Twitter, was created in 2006 and changed the way the news is received and distributed. Since its inception into daily life, Twitter provides users with an outlet to both access and produce news updates anywhere, at any time. Even average citizens join the news cycle by posting descriptions, photographs, or videos of events in the community. This honors thesis examines the relationship between professional journalists and these citizen journalists, focusing on the influence of Twitter. Using interviews with a selection of broadcast and print journalists, this thesis investigates how professional journalists use Twitter and citizen journalists' reports …

Film Portrayals Of People With Disabilities Post 2000, Hailey Walker Jan 2016

Film Portrayals Of People With Disabilities Post 2000, Hailey Walker

Honors Theses

Film portrayals of people with disabilities have had a significant, but perhaps unnoticed, role in shaping the general public views of individuals with disabilities. Research has documented the impact of films on creating and perpetuating misconceptions of a variety of disabilities and disability groups. Numerous stereotypes are portrayed in films depicting the lives of people with disabilities, which lead to barriers that keep people with disabilities in marginalized roles. Much research has been conducted on films produced prior to the year 2000. These studies have identified the themes and stereotypes portrayed that have been harmful to the lives and empowerment …
