Cultural Industries And Cultural Policy: A Critique Of Recent Discourses In Regional Economic Development, Chris Gibson, Natascha Klocker
Cultural Industries And Cultural Policy: A Critique Of Recent Discourses In Regional Economic Development, Chris Gibson, Natascha Klocker
Natascha Klocker
The cultural industries (sometimes referred to as 'creative industries') are an increasingly common component of urban and regional economic development discourse, connected to an acknowledgement of the contribution of creativity to economic performance and, more generally, their power to transform images and identities for places. Such discourses have become more pervasive with a set of key books - most notably Charles Landry's The Creative City (2001), and Florida's The Rise of the Creative Class (2002) - that have become popular among both economic development planners and cultural policy makers. This paper seeks to intervene in the discourses established by these …

Academic Publishing As 'Creative' Industry And Recent Discourses Of 'Creative Economies': Some Critical Reflections, Chris Gibson, Natascha Klocker
Natascha Klocker
his paper continues recent discussions on the (geo)politics of the production of academic knowledges, in relation to the recent rise of narratives of 'the creative economy'. Creativity and the 'creative industries' are increasingly common components of urban economic development discourse, especially following the release of a set of key books - most notably Charles Landry's The Creative City (2000), and Richard Florida's The Rise of the Creative Class (2002) - that have become popular among economic development planners and cultural policy makers. This paper focuses on the traffic of these books, and their authors, beyond the Anglo-American core. It also …
The Global Cowboy: Rural Masculinities And Sexualities, Chris Gibson
The Global Cowboy: Rural Masculinities And Sexualities, Chris Gibson
Chris Gibson
There is arguably no more iconic motif of rural masculinity than the cowboy. The cowboy is a persona, a stereotype, an ideology, and a style of manhood strongly associated with rurality. With origins in Mexico and the American West, cowboy imagery and identities were globalized in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and were adopted, mutated, and subverted in contexts as different as Hawai'i, urban Japan, and remote Aboriginal Australia. This chapter traces the historical emergence and diffusion of cowboy masculinity, arguing that key to its endurance has been its malleability-its multivalent combinations of hero worship, ambiguity, rural place-based …

Neither Here Nor There Or Always Here And There? Antipodean Reflections On Economic Geography, Felicity Wray, Rae Dufty-Jones, Chris Gibson, Wendy Larner, Andrew Beer, Richard Heron, Phillip O'Neill
Chris Gibson
This paper emerged from discussions held over a two-day symposium hosted by the University of Western Sydney and the Institute of Australian Geographers in December 2011. Drawing on contemporary themes in economic geography around postcolonial theory and a concern with the histories of the sub-discipline, the symposium sought to triangulate these discourses using Raewyn Connell's (2006, 2007a, 2007b) concept of 'Southern Theory' as a means of beginning a process of critical reflection about the types of economic geographies that are produced from and in the 'Antipodes'. After introducing these debates and presenting a critical reflection on how Connell's Southern Theory …
Mild-Mannered Bistro By Day, Eclectic Freak-Land At Night: Memories Of An Australian Music Venue, Ben Gallan, Chris Gibson
Mild-Mannered Bistro By Day, Eclectic Freak-Land At Night: Memories Of An Australian Music Venue, Ben Gallan, Chris Gibson
Chris Gibson
This article is about a pub that is also a live music venue: the Oxford Tavern in Wollongong. It tells the story of the alternative live music scene that existed there for twenty years before the venue closed in 2010. More than this, it makes an argument for vernacular cultural histories of subcultural places within Australian cities, taking seriously the forgotten venues where marginal social groups find meaning and community. Resonating are more universal themes in Australian cultural life: accommodating difference, a space for expression of otherness, and the importance of music and of a venue in shaping a time …
Urban Cultural Policy, City Size, And Proximity, Chris Gibson, Gordon Waitt
Urban Cultural Policy, City Size, And Proximity, Chris Gibson, Gordon Waitt
Chris Gibson
In this chapter we bring a distinctly geographical perspective to questions of urban cultural policy. We are interested in how perceptions (and concrete experiences) of city size and proximity shape the politics of urban cultural policymaking. The particular kind of urban cultural policymaking we discuss relates to the pervasive idea that cities ought to refashion their economic development policies and planning regimes to become "creative cities" (Landry 2000). Central to this is an assumption that all places now compete with each other for creative industries and people - the supposed "creative class," who are imagined as a vital demographic group …
The Spiral Gallery: Non-Market Creativity And Belonging In An Australian Country Town, Gordon Waitt, Chris Gibson
The Spiral Gallery: Non-Market Creativity And Belonging In An Australian Country Town, Gordon Waitt, Chris Gibson
Chris Gibson
This paper seeks to explore creative practice in an Australian country town, and in so doing, to unsettle market-orientated interpretations of creativity that privilege the urban. Instead of focusing on creative practice as a means to develop industries, we focus on how creativity is a means to establish a cooperative gallery space that helps to sustain a sense of self in an otherwise antithetical social and cultural context. The example we discuss is The Spiral Gallery, a women's co-operative arts space established in the 1990s in the small (but somewhat iconic) country town of Bega - in a place where …
The 'Cultural Turn' In Australian Regional Economic Development Discourse: Neoliberalising Creativity?, Chris Gibson, Natascha Klocker
The 'Cultural Turn' In Australian Regional Economic Development Discourse: Neoliberalising Creativity?, Chris Gibson, Natascha Klocker
Chris Gibson
Regional economic policy-makers are increasingly interested in the contribution of creativity to the economic performance of regions and, more generally, in its power to transform the images and identities of places. This has constituted a 'cultural turn', of sorts, away from an emphasis on macro-scale projects and employment schemes, towards an interest in the creative industries, entrepreneurial culture and innovation. This paper discusses how recent discourses of the role of 'creativity' in regions have drawn upon, and contributed to, particular forms of neoliberalisation. Its focus is the recent application of a statistical measure - Richard Florida's (2002) 'creativity index' - …

Community Antagonism Towards Asylum Seekers In Port Augusta, South Australia, Natascha Klocker
Community Antagonism Towards Asylum Seekers In Port Augusta, South Australia, Natascha Klocker
Natascha Klocker
An overtly hostile response to asylum seekers was observed in questionnaire responses provided by residents of Port Augusta, South Australia in April 2002. A social construction approach to identity and representation was used to interrogate this antagonism within its social, cultural, political and geographical contexts. Asylum seekers were constructed as 'burdensome', 'threatening' and 'illegal', and opposition to them was set within the discursive framework of a 'Self/Other' binary. Enmity towards asylum seekers was articulated concurrently with overwhelming support for the Federal Government's exclusive and deterrence-oriented asylum policies. However, vehement opposition was expressed regarding the government's decision to construct Baxter Immigration …

Danielle Skropeta
Tumor-specific delivery of ligand-directed prodrugs can increase the therapeutic window of chemotherapeutics by maintaining efficacy whilst decreasing toxic side effects. We have previously described a series of synthetic N-alkylated isatin cytotoxins that destabilize microtubules and induce apoptosis with 10-fold greater potency than conventional anti-mitotics in vitro. Here, we report the characterization, in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo efficacy of a lead compound, 5,7-dibromo-N-(p-hydroxymethylbenzyl)isatin (N-AI) conjugated via an esterase-labile linker (N-AIE) to two proven targeting ligands, transferrin (Tf) and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 2 (PAI-2/serpinB2). N-AI was released from N-AIE and the targeting ligands Tf/PAI-2 in an esterase-dependent manner at 37 …

Teasaponin Improves Central Leptin Sensitivity In High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice, Y Wu, Xu-Feng Huang, Y Yu
Yizhen Wu
Purpose: Leptin promotes negative energy balance by suppressing energy intake (EI) and elevating energy expenditure through its central action. Central leptin resistance is a hallmark of diet-induced obesity (DIO). Oral administration of teasaponin (TS) can reduce body weight and fat mass. However, little is known if TS has benefit effect in improving central leptin sensitivity. This study investigated the effects of TS on central leptin sensitivity and leptin signalling in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (Arc) of DIO mice. Methods: After 15 weeks of high-fat diet, DIO mice (n=40) were divided into two groups received either intraperitoneal (ip) injection of TS …

Time-Dependent Ghrelinergic Signaling And Hyperphagia Induced By Olanzapine, Q Zhang, M He, J Lian, C Deng, Xu-Feng Huang
Qingsheng Zhang
Olanzapine is widely used to treat schizophrenia and other mental diseases. Interestingly, although increased body weight is evident throughout the course of olanzapine treatment, elevated food intake only appears in relatively shorter term. Olanzapine can modulate ghrelin levels, which may upregulate neuropeptide Y (NPY) secretion at hypothalamus. Brain-specific homeobox transcription factor (BSX) may also be involved in ghrelin-induced hyperphagia. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of olanzapine on central NPY, BSX and plasma ghrelin levels, and their relationship to food intake. METHODS: Rats were treated with olanzapine (1mg/kg, orally, 3x/day, n=12/group) or vehicle for 1 week, 2 weeks, or 5 weeks. …

Bra-Breast Forces Generated In Women With Large Breasts While Standing And During Treadmill Running: Implications For Sports Bra Design, Deirdre Mcghee, Julie Steele, William Zealey, George Takacs
George Takacs
This study aimed to determine the bra–breast forces generated in women with large breasts while these women wore different levels of breast support during both upright standing and treadmill running. The mean bilateral vertical component of the bra–breast force in standing was 11.7 ± 4.6 N, whereas during treadmill running the mean unilateral bra–breast force was 8.7 ± 6.4 N and 14.7 ± 10.3 N in the high and low support conditions, respectively. Furthermore, breast mass was significantly correlated with vertical breast displacement (R2 = 0.62) in the high support condition. The wide range of breast masses of women with …

Recognition Of Late Cretaceous Hasanbag Ophiolite-Arc Rocks In The Kurdistan Region Of The Iraqi Zagros Suture Zone: A Missing Link In The Paleogeography Of The Closing Neotethys Ocean, Sarmad Ali, S Buckman, K Aswad, B Jones, S Ismail, A Nutman
Solomon Buckman Dr.
The Hasanbag igneous complex is situated near Sidekan, 100 km northeast of Erbil city, Kurdistan Region, within the Iraqi Zagros suture zone. It forms part of an ophiolite-bearing terrane referred to as the "Upper Allochthon" or Gemo-Qandil Group. The Hasanbag igneous complex consists predominantly of calc-alkaline basaltic andesites to andesites cut by microgabbro and diorite dikes, which previously were interpreted as a part of the Eocene Walash volcanic group. However, 40Ar-39Ar dates on Hasanbag igneous complex kaersutite (magmatic hornblende) indicate an Albian-Cenomanian age (106-92 Ma). This reveals a previously unrecognized portion of the Late Cretaceous, Neotethyan ophiolite-arc complexes in the …

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Examine Residential Substance Abuse Workers' Intention To Use Evidence-Based Practices, Peter Kelly, Frank Deane, Megan Lovett
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Examine Residential Substance Abuse Workers' Intention To Use Evidence-Based Practices, Peter Kelly, Frank Deane, Megan Lovett
Peter Kelly
There is considerable discrepancy between what is considered evidence-based practice (EBP) and what is actually delivered in substance abuse treatment settings. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TpB) is a well-established model that may assist in better understanding clinician’s intentions to use EBPs. A total of 106 residential substance abuse workers employed by The Salvation Army participated in the current study. The workers completed an anonymous survey that assessed attitudes toward EBP and examined the constructs within the TpB. A linear regression analysis was used to predict clinicians’ intentions to use EBPs. Overall, the model accounted for 41% of the variance …

'Do More, Smoke Less!' Harm Reduction In Action For Smokers With Mental Health/Substance Use Problems Who Cannot Or Will Not Quit, Amanda Baker, Robin Callister, Peter Kelly, Kypros Kypri
Peter Kelly
Although smoking rates among mental health/substance abusing populations are very high, the focus of treatment and research has tended to be on substances other than tobacco.A range of harm-reduction strategies is needed, including long-term nicotine maintenance, smokeless tobacco and ‘clean’ nicotine products. For those who cannot or will not quit, assistance in reducing smoking should be given. Interventions for smoking among people with mental health/substance use problems may best be delivered by addressing multiple health-risk behaviours, especially physical activity, around the same time. [Baker AL, Callister R, Kelly PJ, Kypri K. ‘Do more, smoke less!’ Harm reduction in action for …
