Assessment has become an important component of any discussion on planning or implementing new library services as well as evaluating existing ones. Yet it is often difficult to know how to proceed with assessment, what tools to use, and how to implement the results of assessment. This session presented a practical example of assessing a new a Science and Technology library service with emphasis placed on how assessment was incorporated into planning process, what tools were used, and what the practical outcomes of that assessment were.

With an aging overhead scanner that would no longer be covered under the vendor’s service contract, our ILL department was in the market for a new scanner. Determining our needs and evaluating our potential choices became a team effort involving everybody from undergraduate student employees to the Head of Access Services. Informal conversations were the first step, followed by perusal of sales materials for scanners on the market to determine features available. Every member of the Interlibrary Loan department was invited to complete a survey of preferred and necessary features. The survey prompted a high level of staff engagement in …

The Dynamics of Civil Resistance (DOCR), is a not-for-profit popular education and cultural development programme in Oceania. We work in collaboration with churches, human rights organisations, traditional leaders, women leaders, youth and student groups and community organisations to establish a network of indigenous educators who can resource nonviolent social movements and democratic transitions.

In Vanuatu, communities have expressed a desire to continue leading lifestyles based on a traditional economic base. In the context of economic globalisation, however, this possibility is being ignored or denied by government policy decisions made on the basis of ‘economic rationalism’. There is growing concern that these government decisions are in fact destructive of ‘popular cultural expressions’, and do not respect the values of the community in relation to its development.
