Sarah Principato (Environmental Studies), Alecea Standlee (Sociology), Mercedes Valmisa (Philosophy) When COVID-19 caused an emergency pivot to online teaching and learning, students and faculty suddenly needed course materials that were accessible and adaptable in that context. Open educational resources (OER) offer flexibility and resiliency in any mode of instruction, while simultaneously reducing inequities among students. Faculty can employ other strategies to reduce student costs, as well. This presentation discusses the motivating factors behind the rise of the open access movement, including the rising costs of traditionally published journals, the perceived benefits to the classroom and student retention, as well as the broader benefits to the global community of information seekers/ scholars. Additionally, it discusses the current state of open access engagement at Augustana College, including the adoption of open educational resources in the classroom, as well as the current status and future goals for Augustana Digital Commons.
