How are collections processed and presented in regards to race and ethnicity? What is not collected and why? Who gets to say what is worth collecting? Operating from three distinct but interlocking perspectives, we will discuss our experiences navigating collection development and collection development policies as a Black woman archivist, a White woman anti-racist public librarian, and a Black woman academic librarian. We will look at the ways in which Black women as collections professionals face invisibility, coded language, and increased mental and emotional labor while operating in a profession that is 85.2% White. The Effect Of A Computing-Focused Linked-Courses Learning Community On Minority And Female Students, Amber Settle, James Doyle, Theresa Steinbach

While enrollments in computing degrees and courses have grown rapidly in the past decade, both female and minority male students remain underrepresented in computing programs. This makes recruitment and retention of these populations a continuing concern. Affinity for a major is connected to student retention, and learning communities have proven effective for this purpose. We present an evaluation of a three-year linked-courses learning community in which we measure pre- to post-quarter changes in student attitudes and resource utilization. We find that participants in the learning community are significantly more likely to report being a part of a group of programmers …

Infographics are one of the many visual elements that are becoming more and more prevalent in the digital arena. In this age of prolific social media postings, how well do college students understand infographics? This study surveyed two Journalism Copy Editing classes at Murray State University, in Murray, Kentucky. In both classes, students were given a pre- and post-questionnaire, which illuminated students’ visual literacy competencies and explored students' understanding about the visual elements and textual content of infographics. This workshop discusses various ways to directly engage student patrons for outreach and programming purposes, while eliminating post-secondary administration red-tape that could hinder establishment of this programming. The presenters illustrate ways to delegate to certain students creation and promotion of library-related content for consumption by the rest of the campus community. This presentation introduces an ongoing study evaluating how the College of DuPage Library’s Information Literacy Instruction Program contributes to students meeting institutional General Education Information Literacy outcomes. Via a cross-sectional exploratory survey, faculty teaching English Composition II and Fundamentals of Speech Communications will provide subjective understanding of information literacy and fact-reporting on use of information literacy services provided by the library. Results will impact the direction of the library’s information literacy instruction program and shape assessment of student learning.

Every English sentence requires a verb containing information about time. This in turn makes the temporal meanings that verbs carry crucial. The current study is part of a larger research interest into the nature of cognitive processing of time in language by native and non-native readers of English (Becker, Ferretti, & Madden_Lombardi, 2013; Schramm & Mensink, in press). It explores the acquisition of temporal meanings by adult non-native speakers of English.  It specifically addresses the natural progression in learners’ development of the comprehension of time concepts (not only of their production) and whether instruction can change the rate of this …

Although the term “social justice” itself is commonly attributed to a 19th century Catholic theologian, the concept of social justice and imperatives to work toward its realization are integral to virtually all religious and spiritual traditions. Religious traditions have historically shaped institutions and power relationships in profound ways and continue to do so alongside the rise of the “nones” (those with no religious affiliation). Moreover, the complex interplay between religious and other cultural, racial, ethnic, lingual, political, and economic forces render a critical social analysis that leaves out religious factors woefully incomplete. The American Jewish Immigration Collection is an archival collection of over 300 items, mostly correspondence, with reports of various kinds, some pamphlets, articles or essays, mainly from the archives of Louis Levy and Joseph Erhlich. Louis Levy and Joseph Erhlich were very active in organizations established to assist Jewish immigrants. The bulk of the collection dates from 1888-1918, which were peak years of Russian Jewish immigration. Much of the collection relates to the work of, or supported by, the Baron de Hirsch fund. Setback regulations often require that all buildings be a certain amount of feet (usually about 25-50 feet from the street).  As a result of these zoning rules, all destinations outside the most urban areas have to place either parking or useless green spaces between the street and a store, office building or residence.
 
I argue that these regulations make walking more difficult, for four reasons.  First, pedestrians have to waste time walking through these empty spaces.  Second, walking through a sea of parking is simply no fun.  Pedestrians tend to enjoy shade and a sense of enclosure, so they …
