Theme-Based Bridge Courses: A Gateway To Linguistic Proficiency, Heather W. Allen, Stacey Katz Bourns

Based on the 2007 MLA report’s call for more integrative approaches to L2 language/literature courses, we present the curricula of two theme-based French bridge courses. These courses simultaneously develop students' advanced language proficiency and explore literary, cultural, and sociolinguistic themes through an analysis of various textual genres and linguistic registers.

Espe Alegria: Cultural Advisor And Voice Of The Basques In American Radio, Erin Passehl

This presentation will showcase Basque immigrant Espe Alegria (1906-1991), who spent her life preserving and promoting Basque language, culture, and identity in Boise, Idaho. Espe Alegria’s continuous work left a legacy on the American Diaspora in three areas: her work in radio broadcasting, translation and immigration services, and the arts. Espe hosted The Basque Program, a one-hour radio program that aired every week from 1955-1981. Known as the “Voice of the Basques,” Espe used her social connections to personalize the program in ways that connected with listeners in both cities and Basque-speaking sheepherders. Depression is one of the most widespread mental illnesses that affect people worldwide for very divergent reasons. The relevance of investigating what are the factors that facilitate depression are twofold: 1) its strong impact on the quality of life and happiness and 2) the possibility of identifying risk groups. In 2001, the World Health Organization (WHO) projected that depression was expected to be the first disorder in the developed word by 2020. In 2003, the WHO estimated that the overall cost of mental disorders accounted for between three and four percent of Gross Domestic Product. WHO (2007) stated that depression …
