Utilizing Student Workers For Digital Commons Projects, Ellen Amatangelo, Elizabeth Parret

This lightning talk was presented by the Scholarly Communications Coordinator and the Scholarly Communications Student Supervisor from Brigham Young University at the Digital Commons North American Conference 2023. It provides an overview of how student workers at the BYU Library are involved in Digital Commons projects and discusses the types of projects and processes that students work on, including an outline of student supervisor responsibilities. The purpose of the presentation is to get other Digital Commons administrators excited about expanding the possibilities of their repositories by collaborating with student workers.

This presentation will highlight some of the journals' features, explore how the library's Scholarly Communications team works with editors, discuss the requirements for having a journal housed in the repository, and examine readership statistics and discoverability.

Science librarians at Brigham Young University have hosted a student poster competition for the past several years to showcase student research on campus and to promote science information literacy and scholarly communication skills. As part of this competition, students receive constructive feedback on both their poster design and their oral presentation skills during an in-person open house. In 2020, COVID-19 threw a curveball as the campus shut down just two weeks before the scheduled competition open house. Decision-Based Learning For Info Literacy One-Shots, David Pixton

An online instructional framework, called “decision-based learning,” helps students learn to think like an expert through making a series of simple decisions that the expert has trained into his or her thought patterns. This framework is currently being tested in one-hour information literacy workshops for engineering and technology students. This lightning talk briefly describes the decision-based learning method and results of this study so far.

A library construction project led our library’s Science & Engineering Department to take on a massive evaluation of the entire science print collection and reduce the collection footprint by at least 36% within a 12 month period. In order to improve access, reduce the footprint, strengthen the robustness of our collection, and complete the project in an effective and timely manner, a methodology of how to choose, select, evaluate, and move the entire collection of over 360,000 items had to be established and vetted. A German-language presentation at the library school of the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, on June 30, 2009. The English translation of the title is: "What's the Point of Outreach in Lean Times? Case Study at a University Library in the Western USA." During the recession after a worldwide housing bubble, this presentation was itself about library outreach as well as library outreach itself, using the case of the Harold B Lee Library. A Power-Point presentation, outline to oral presentation and bibliography on the topic are all included.
