In this paper, we analyze the equilibrium responses (in terms of defense, R&D and preemption) to a potential terrorist attack in a two-country framework (Home and Foreign) using a multi-stage game with imperfect information. We highlight three different types of strategic interactions: (a) how the choice of defense, R&D and pre-emption affects the choice of the same in the other country (strategic interdependence across countries); (b) the strategic interaction between the instruments of terrorism deterrence, namely, defense, R&D and pre-emption in a given country and (c) the strategic interaction between the terrorist and the defender. The Los Angeles metropolitan region is a prime target for a terrorist attack. There are many specific targets: The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), downtown high-rises, its theme parks, its freeways, and its ports, among many others. We have developed a spatially disaggregated economic impact model that can evaluate all of these and any other plausible attacks. In this paper, we estimate the economic impacts of an attack on the Los Angeles- Long Beach Twin Ports.

This paper is one of a series of studies by our group on the economic impact of a variety of terrorist attacks in the United States. These studies use either or both of two economic impact models, SCPM (the Southern California Planning Model) and NIEMO (the National Interstate Economic Model). This research uses only the latter model and traces the interregional economic effects of attacks on major theme parks (13, including two clusters) located in a modest number of States (eight). This article examines attitudes about terrorism utilizing criminological literature about fear of crime and perceived risk of victimization and data from a statewide survey of 1,617 adults in Kentucky. Measures of both fear of terrorism and perceived risk of terrorism were geography based. The demographic variables had minimal impact on both perceived risk of terrorism and fear of terrorism, although gender was significantly related to both, suggesting a link based on socialization experiences of men and women. Although rural residence had a small but statistically significant relationship to perceived risk, it was not related to fear. The strongest predictor of …
