Individual Differences In Taste, Body Weight, And Depression In The "Helplessness" Rat Model And In Humans., Clinton Chapman, Nancy Dess
Clinton D Chapman
In Exp 1, exposure of rats to unsignaled, inescapable shock resulted in finickiness about drinking a weak quinine solution. In contrast, exposure to escapable shock resulted in marked individual differences in finickiness that were predicted by prestress body weight. A more sensitive index of finickiness was used in Exp 2, and a correlation between body weight and finickiness was observed in nonshocked rats. In Exp 3, measures of quinine reactivity and body weight predicted depressive symptomatology in a nonclinical human sample of 37 undergraduates. Although research in the helplessness paradigm usually focuses on environmental determinants of distress, the paradigm may …

The Vcl Hypothesis Revisited: Patterns Of Femoral Morphology Among Quadrupedal And Saltatorial Prosimian Primates, Robert Anemone
The Vcl Hypothesis Revisited: Patterns Of Femoral Morphology Among Quadrupedal And Saltatorial Prosimian Primates, Robert Anemone
Robert L. Anemone
The descriptive and functional morphology of the postcranium of the vertical clinging and leaping prosimians is of great interest in both adaptational and phylogenetic studies of extant and extinct primates. An analysis of patterns of femoral morphology among quadrupedal and saltatory living prosimians indicates the presence of at least two, and possibly three, distinct femoral adaptations to the demands of an arboreal, saltatory existence. Osteological measurements were taken on 277 postcranial skeletons representing eight prosimian families, with skeletal trunk length (Biegert and Maurer, Folia Primatol. 17:142–156, 1972) used as an estimator of body size in both bivariate and multivariate (discriminant …
The Conflict Cycle: A Useful Model For Youth And Child Care Workers, Norman Powell
The Conflict Cycle: A Useful Model For Youth And Child Care Workers, Norman Powell
Norman W. Powell
The model makes the important assumption that the quality of early life experiences of children can significantly affect their personality development. The three preconditioning components are the self-concept, the worldview, and values. The components of the conflict cycle are stress, feelings, behavior, and response. The model is applied in analyzing an example of a negative power struggle between a child care worker and a child. The model can be used to train staff members and children to better understand daily conflicts and the ways to avoid destructive conflict situations. The model can also be used to help parents better understand …
