Malpractice Claims Against Social Workers: First Facts, Frederic Reamer

Frederic G Reamer

Malpractice claims against social workers are increasing. Unfortunately, to date social workers have not had access to data about the frequency, types, and cost of malpractice claims filed against practitioners. This article summarizes claims data drawn from the records of the National Association of Social Workers Insurance Trust covering the period between 1969 and 1990. Data are provided on the frequency and cost of claims for various claims categories. Suggestions are offered to minimize the occurrence of liability claims and to enhance risk management.
