Brave New World: Myth And Migration In Recent Asian-Australian Picture Books, Wenche Ommundsen
Wenche Ommundsen
From Exodus to the American Dream, from Terra Nullius to the Yellow Peril to multicultural harmony, migration has provided a rich source of myth throughout human history. It engenders dreams, fears and memories in both migrant and resident populations; giving rise to hope for a new start and a bright future, feelings of exile and alienation, nostalgia for lost homelands, dreams of belonging and entitlement, fears of invasion, dispossession and cultural extinction. It has inspired artists and writers from the time of the Ancient Testament to the contemporary age of globalisation and mass migration and it has exercised the minds …

Support Or Spoon Feeding? Research Skills Training For First Year Marketing Students In A Large Class, S. Lambert, V. Yanamandram
Support Or Spoon Feeding? Research Skills Training For First Year Marketing Students In A Large Class, S. Lambert, V. Yanamandram
Sarah Lambert
This paper describes the work done by the authors to develop and evaluate a new worksheet and quiz assessment developed to explicitly teach the skills required by marketing students to complete their studies and to be successful professional marketers. While concerns were raised in the teaching faculty that such interventions might amount to spoon feeding, the authors felt that there was sufficient evidence to suggest that such an activity was an effective learning support, especially in such a large first year class. Student survey results indicate that for many students the activity successfully taught a repeatable process of how to …

Collaborative Design Projects: Evaluating Students' Online Discussions, S. Lambert
Sarah Lambert
This paper reports on the author’s work to evaluate student online discussion, a learning tool used in a face-to-face graphic design subject centred around a collaborative design project. A modified teaching and learning model with new online resources was trialled with approx 45 undergraduate design students in session 1 of 2003. The 4 students in each project team were allocated a specific role based on contemporary design studio practice. An online discussion space was set up for each project team. A number of evaluation techniques were used including a content analysis of online discussion postings on which this paper focuses. …

Inspiring Imagination – Education And Learning: The University Experience In The Regional Development Cocktail, Robbie Collins, Laurie Stevenson
Robbie Collins
This paper suggests that imagination ferments regional development. The paper considers how education, and in particular regional universities, are part of the regional development cocktail. Using contemporary and historical experience at the Shoalhaven Campus the paper explores how Shoalhaven campus can be seen as an integral ingredient in the Shoalhaven development cocktail. In doing so, it provides an analysis that matches other regional campus experiences. What is Shoalhaven Campus? An educational precinct based on a campus co-location model. In this instance, TAFE and University are co-located on the campus grounds and share library, IT, telephone and campus services facilities. The …

Leadership, Network Facilitation And Regional Development: Critical Reflection As A Tool For Insight???, Robbie Collins
Robbie Collins
In his keynote address at the ANZRSAI Conference 2005, Professor Blakely challenged regional scientists to use their “ideal position to forge these [separate disciplines informing regional science] into a disciplinary understanding that operates across disciplines”. In doing so the forces at work in the myths, magic and mix of regional innovation are necessarily viewed as interdependent components. The component to be focussed upon here is leadership, especially where it assists in developing networks and “knowdes” in the web of the development of the knowledge economy. Such a critical perspective encourages a consideration of the work of practitioners in regional development …

Available informatic resources contribute to the archaeological process allowing to have a more detailed register of the evidence and leading to an efficient information management. Digital reconstruction of sites, as developed all over the world, can be helpful to iconographic research, data massification and especially for the preservation of cultural heritage. In this article, a proposal for a virtual reconstruction of Chan Chan in the peruvian North Coast is made. This paper presents a brief summary of the project development, giving the outlines, research phases and the possible contributions and perspectives.

Protection, Not Barriers: Using Social Software Policies To Guide And Safeguard Students And Employees, Sarah Steiner, Brian Kooy

Academic librarians have been using social software and networking sites for public services since they appeared on the Internet. While issues of privacy, identity management, and self-disclosure when using such technologies have been written about, very little critical attention has been paid to establishing policies or guidelines related to their use. This article is based on the authors’ experience creating a social software policy and internal service guidelines at Georgia State University and on the results of an informal survey study that gauged academic librarians’ need for and awareness of such documents. It provides both reasoning and assistance for developing …

Radio Norfolk: Community And Communication On Norfolk Island, Rebecca Coyle
Dr Rebecca Coyle
IntroductionMy interest and research into the radio service on Norfolk Island commenced with a three-month residency in 1999.[1] Both my research and my experiences on the island brought to mind the contradictions and tensions between public and private, as well as between global and local, which seemed significant then and still affect island identities today. These aspects pertain to the radio service on the island insofar as Radio Norfolk is both a highly localised service while at the same time a conduit for broadcasts from elsewhere, some of which represent Norfolk Island back to itself through news coverage of island …

Basking Behavior Of Emydid Turtles (Chysemys Picta Marginata, Graptemys Geographica, And Trachemys Scripta Elegans) In An Urban Landscape, W. Peterman, Travis Ryan
Travis J. Ryan
Basking is common in emydid turtles and is generally accepted to be in thermoregulatory behavior. In 2004, we quantified and described the basking behavior of turtles in the Central Canal of Indianapolis. This canal system runs through an urban landscape that is dominated by fragmented woodlots, residential areas. and commercial areas. We observed that basking turtles exhibited variable basking behavior. with spatial and temporal shins in basking behavior from east-facing banks in the morning to west-facing banks in the afternoon. Turtles in the Central Canal are subject to frequent disturbance, which altered basking behavior. Many turtles forewent aerial basking on …

This paper describes two new live performance scenarios for performing music using bluetooth-enabled mobile phones. Interaction between mobile phones via wireless link is a key feature of the performance interface for each scenario. Both scenarios are discussed in the context of two publicly performed works for an ensemble of players in which mobile phone handsets are used both as sound sources and as hand-held controllers. In both works mobile phones are mounted in a specially devised pouch attached to a cord and physically swung to produce audio chorusing. During performance some players swing phones while others operate phones as hand-held …

This paper describes software tools used to create java applications for performing music using mobile phones. The tools provide a means for composers working in the Pure Data composition environment to design and audition performances using ensembles of mobile phones. These tools were developed as part of a larger project motivated by the desire to allow large groups of non-expert players to perform music based on just intonation using ubiquitous technology. The paper discusses the process that replicates a Pure Data patch so that it will operate within the hardware and software constraints of the Java 2 Micro Edition. It …

Enabling Musical Applications On A Linux Phone, Greg Schiemer, E. Chen
Greg Schiemer
Over the past decade the mobile phone has evolved to become a hardware platform for musical interaction and is increasingly being taken seriously by composers and instrument designers alike. Its gradual evolution has seen improvements in hardware architecture that require al-ternative methods of programming. Dedicated I/O in-struction sets for dealing with the idiosyncracies of vari-ous embedded peripheral devices are gradually being overtaken by I/O control using generic software that behaves more like operating systems developed for mainframe computers over three decades ago. This paper looks at the Neo FreeRunner, an open source mobile phone programmed using Linux. Its attraction as …

Bees In America: How The Honey Bee Shaped A Nation, Tammy Horn
Bees In America: How The Honey Bee Shaped A Nation, Tammy Horn
Tammy Horn
" Honey bees--and the qualities associated with them--have quietly influenced American values for four centuries. During every major period in the country's history, bees and beekeepers have represented order and stability in a country without a national religion, political party, or language. Bees in America is an enlightening cultural history of bees and beekeeping in the United States. Tammy Horn, herself a beekeeper, offers a varied social and technological history from the colonial period, when the British first introduced bees to the New World, to the present, when bees are being used by the American military to detect bombs. Early …

Darwinian Controversies: An Historiographical Recounting, David Depew
David J Depew
This essay reviews key controversies in the history of the Darwinian research tradition: the Wilberforce-Huxley debate in 1860, early twentieth-century debates about the heritability of acquired characteristics and the consistency of Mendelian genetics with natural selection; the 1925 Scopes trial about teaching evolution; tensions about race, culture, and eugenics at the 1959 centenary celebration Darwin’s Origin of Species; adaptationism and its critics in the Sociobiology debate of 1970s and, more recently, Evolutionary Psychology; and current disputes about Intelligent Design. These controversies, I argue, are etched into public memory because they occur at the emotionally charged boundaries between public-political, technical-scientific, and …

"The legend of blood sucking vampires has captured peoples’ imagination for generations. Mysterious tales of the undead rising from their coffins to terrorise the living and drain their blood are the stuff of horror movies and novels. But a crack team of archaeologists and forensic scientists have uncovered hard evidence for the existence of the legend – a legend that continues to haunt communities in the present day…"
