Growing The Green Energy Economy: Workforce Development And Cluster Growth In The Pioneer Valley Of Massachusetts, Nicholas B. Altonaga

International Development, Community and Environment (IDCE)

Workforce development programs have a positive effect on the formation of a cluster. Incorporating these programs into cluster theory is essential to creating more robust and dynamic local growth in the emerging green energy sector. Studying programs in the green energy sector in the Pioneer Valley has shown an increase in collaboration, local and regional connectivity, and industry communication. These aspects reinforce the comparative advantage of organizations within the cluster, while downplaying their challenges . Applying this focus on workforce development is important for cementing the green energy cluster into an enduring force in the domestic economy in the 21 …

Employment Change Among Hurricane Katrina Evacuees: Impacts Of Race And Place, Sara Chaganti, Jasmine Waddell

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

After disaster-related displacement, finding new employment is critical to displaced individuals’ ability to regain stability for themselves and their families. This paper considers displaced Katrina survivors’ ability to maintain or improve pre-Katrina employment status (full-time vs. part-time vs. unemployed) post-Katrina. Using data from the Displaced New Orleans Residents Pilot Study, we construct a scale of employment change which offers a nuanced look at employment change. We focus specifically on the impact of long-term displacement and race on changes in survivors’ employment status. We find across our analyses that displacement has a negative effect on employment status. And we find that …

An Evaluation Of Competitive Industrial Structure And Regional Manufacturing Employment Change., Joshua Drucker

Joshua Drucker

Economic diversity, industrial specialization, and competitive structure are considered together in a non-causal regression framework in order to assess their relative associations with economic performance. The innovative features of the research are considering together multiple distinct facets of industrial structure at the regional scale, emphasizing the less commonly studied characteristic of industrial competitive structure, and exploiting confidential microdata to construct and evaluate detailed metrics across broad geographic and industrial ranges. The findings …

Macroeconomic Effects Of Over-Investment In Housing In An Aggregative Model Of Economic Activity, Hian Teck Hoon Oct 2010

Macroeconomic Effects Of Over-Investment In Housing In An Aggregative Model Of Economic Activity, Hian Teck Hoon

Research Collection School Of Economics

Is there a theoretical basis for the view that the end of a period of over-investment necessarily leads to a period of below-normal employment as the excess capital stock is run down? We study the repercussions of a false boom in housing driven by prior expectations of future housing prices not justified by fundamentals. When these expectations are corrected, the result is a precipitous drop in housing prices and, on that account alone, some drop in employment. There is also a bulge in the housing stock. In the case of a closed economy, the downward shift of the term structure …

It is recognized that ocean and coastal areas of the United States contribute significantly to our nation’s overall economy. What is not completely understood is the extent to and manner in which our economy benefits from the wide range of marine and coastal activities. One area of the ocean economy that has not been collectively measured or examined is the contribution of marine research and education institutions. The goal of the project was to create a prototype strategy at a local level for collecting data at a national level, in order to create an economic sector of these institutions and …
