The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

From the mid-1960's, Virginia Republicans, in tune with President Richard Nixon's active "Southern strategy," revived party fortunes in the state by capitalizing on the ongoing degeneration of Virginia Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr.'s powerful conservative Democratic organization and the factionalization of the state Democratic Party. Republican Abner Linwood Holton, Jr., solidly carried the 1969 gubernatorial election. In the 1970 senatorial election Independent Harry Flood Byrd, Jr., defeated Republican Ray Lucian Garland and Democrat George Rawlings. This collection consists of a scanned copy of the diary of C. F. Ropes, a Union soldier with the Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and a copy of a publication titled “Civil War Diary of C. F. Ropes, 38th/34th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Co. “H”, 1865” compiled, annotated, and edited by Karen N. Cartwright Nance. The diary covers the period from January to September 1865, and takes place mostly in the Gulf area between Galveston, Texas, and Pensacola, Florida. The publication, in addition to a transcription, includes a schedule and map of C. F. Ropes movements, as well as an index of subjects …
