The 1972 Cigarette Tax Referendum: A Mass Communication Campaign, Gwendolyn Moore Danielson
Dissertations and Theses
During the past forty years, Oregon voters have approved only two tax proposals; both taxes on cigarettes. Central to the questions asked in the investigation of the 1972 cigarette tax campaign was why the outcome of this proposal was successful. The thesis hypothesizes that the critical variable was the involvement of major socio-economic interest groups in formulating and disseminating persuasive campaign messages.
The rationale for entering into such a study was the shortage of information on …

An Experimental Study Of The Effect Of Long Hair Worn By Males Upon Immediate Recall In The Classroom Situation, Edward George Sutter
Masters Theses

A review of contemporary literature revealed that authors in the area of communication still include theories regarding particulars of effective speaker appearance in their writings. Although authors of speech texts have become prescriptive in their directives of grooming, today’s theoretical preference for short hairstyles in educational speaking contexts has not been quantitatively tested. Therefore, this investigation was designed to experimentally assess the effects of the introduction of longer hairstyles in the classroom situation upon student’s immediate recall.
On hundred twenty-nine students enrolled in eight sections …

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Charles W. Penrose, Kent Shelley Davis
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to determine the public speaking style of Charles W. Penrose. The problem was investigated by using the elements of a speaking situation, the speaker, the speech, the audience, and the occasion. Three speeches were used; namely, "Remarks on Union" given on January 19, 1879, "Women Suffrage" given on June 3, 1889, and "Graphic Glimpses of Pioneer Life" given on February 4, 1924. Seven selected criteria were used as guidelines for the evaluation of the speeches; namely, accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness.
The following conclusions resulted from the evaluation of the …
