Volcanoes National Park (VNP) in Rwanda is one of the important protected areas for conservation in the Albertine Rift ecoregion. It inhabits some of the most rare and endemic wildlife species including mountain gorillas. Despite such importance, it continues to be threatened by forest dependence practices of local residents such as, poaching for bush meat and the harvest of non-timber forest products. These practices have been attributed largely to high levels of poverty among park neighboring residents. It is believed that poor residents rely on forest resources to supplement their subsistence livelihoods. The relationship between poverty and forest dependence behavior …

Developing Paradise: Tourism, The Local Community, And Nature In Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, John Ripton Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Las Terrenas, a town in the Samanà province of the Dominican Republic, has experienced phenomenal growth of its tourist industry. Electricity only arrived in Las Terrenas in the late 1990s, yet today, more than 70 hotels and other establishments offer thousands of rooms in tourist accommodations. In little more than two decades, the population of Las Terrenas has mushroomed from a few hundred to nearly 20,000. While the forces of commercial development integrate Las Terrenas into the global economy, its municipal infrastructure simply has not kept pace. The national government finances the construction of roads and other projects to promote …

Is Physical Activity Leisure Or Work? Exploring The Leisure-Tourism-Physical Activity Relationship With Holidaymakers On Rottnest Island, Ruth Sibson, Pascal Scherrer, Maria Ryan, Nadine Henley, Lynnaire Sheridan

Maria M Ryan

To help overcome preventable health problems in the developed world, the 'active living' concept seeks to stimulate people's physical activity in every day environments. This study contributes to the understanding of the leisure-tourism-physical activity relationship by investigating the self-reported physical activity of holiday makers on Rottnest Island, Western Australia, compared to their home environment. The quantitative analysis of 41 participant interviews on behaviour, motivation and constraints revealed that physical activity was seen as leisure on Rottnest but work at home. A uniquely attractive and easily accessible environment and positive social interactions were key contributors to participation in physical activity.

Many holiday destinations provide people with different social, cultural and natural environments that promote opportunities for participation in a range of physical activities. Holiday-makers also generally have more commitment-free time which can provide for increased levels of physical activity. There has, however, been limited research which explores the link between holiday-makers and physical activity and, more specifically, how an individual’s leisure behaviour is influenced by their social and physical environments. This paper explores people’s physical activity experiences on the popular, and fairly unique, holiday destination of Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth, WA. Thirty intercept interviews were conducted with …

New Mexico Tourism: Conflict And Cooperation In The Land Of Enchantment, Emily Alyce Bullington

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact that tourism and tourist sites have upon the surrounding communities in New Mexico. It will look specifically at Bandelier National Monument, El Santuario de Chimayo, and the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell. These sites have all been the cause of tensions in their interactions with the local communities, over issues of culture, identity, or resource usage. But these tourist attractions have also brought economic stimulus to these areas, which has brought about a need for cooperation and compromise between the groups as they have negotiated how tourism …
