Respect Learned Or Earned: A Misinterpretation Between Generations, Ashton Sellers Nov 2014

Respect Learned Or Earned: A Misinterpretation Between Generations, Ashton Sellers

Learning Showcase 2014

Respect, whether viewed as value by some or a specific point of reference by others, causes one to wonder whether it is a learned behavior or detail that one earns. In review of this topic and asking groups of individuals from multiple generational eras, the results vary as to whether respect can be taught or even deserved based upon one’s behaviors and actions.

Many youth of today, do not take the ‘view of having respect for others’ serious enough to know that it is has been taught, it can be taught, and should remain a generational life lesson. Youth have …

Amplifying Our Impact: Exploring Technology-Enhanced Approaches To Extraordinary Citizen Diplomacy, Christopher Washington Nov 2014

Amplifying Our Impact: Exploring Technology-Enhanced Approaches To Extraordinary Citizen Diplomacy, Christopher Washington

Learning Showcase 2014

Across the world, leaders face complex challenges that threaten the vitality and well-being of communities. Many of the challenges cross borders, such as disease outbreaks, air and water pollution, social-political uprisings, and economic instability, to name a few. When faced by difficult challenges, one natural human tendency is to retrench within borders, view problems from within cultural and national perspectives, and to view outside viewpoints and people as threatening. The result can be fractured relationships, suboptimal strategies, and divisive conflict. The complex challenges of our time can only be solved by promoting mutual understanding of the causes and consequences among …

Factors That Influence Practitioners Trained In Six Sigma Principles In The Development Of A Community Of Practice, Alyncia Bowen Nov 2014

Factors That Influence Practitioners Trained In Six Sigma Principles In The Development Of A Community Of Practice, Alyncia Bowen

Learning Showcase 2014

Communities of practice are developed as a means of sharing and perpetuating organizational learning. While the literature is filled with individual studies that focus on knowledge management, organizational learning, communities of practice, and Six Sigma outcomes, it does not illustrate the inherent relationship between these thoughts and practices. This study explored the factors that lead to the development of a community of practice among knowledge workers such as Six Sigma practitioners. This case study illustrates the importance of Bandura’s theory of social learning within the paradigm of a community of practice. This research illustrates the overwhelming influence of experiential learning …

America Davila - Breaking The Cycle: An Examination Of Environmental, Cognitive, And Emotional Factors Of Intimate Partner Violence Victimization In Adolescence, America Davila Oct 2014

America Davila - Breaking The Cycle: An Examination Of Environmental, Cognitive, And Emotional Factors Of Intimate Partner Violence Victimization In Adolescence, America Davila

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2014

Recently, intimate partner violence (IPV) has gained considerable attention as a significant social and public health problem affecting not only adults but also adolescents. Based on Bandura’s social learning theory, considerable research has supported a significant link between growing up in a violent home (DV) and youth dating violence. Expanding on previous studies, we explored the cycle of IPV victimization using a sample of 1,067 adolescents (ages 18-25). We examined whether parental support, dating attitudes, and self-esteem are risk and protective factors of receiving dating aggression. The findings indicate that exposure to aggression in the family, low self-esteem, and the …

This summer, additional footage was added to the documentary, with instrumentation ready for a Fall 2014 data collection. Also this summer, progress was made on …

Who's Your Daddy: Father Trumps Fate In Supernatural, Lugene Rosen Sep 2014

Who's Your Daddy: Father Trumps Fate In Supernatural, Lugene Rosen

Library Books and Book Chapters

"This chapter will examine the characters [of Supernatural] using several indicators of present/absent fathers: the father hunger scale designed by Paul. B. Perrin et al and the schemas developed by several father-focused theorists. These indicators will help explain the motivations that drive Dean, Sam, and to a lesser extent, Bobby. Based upon this exposure to fatherhood and father roles, Dean and Sam seem to be fulfilling a destiny that was decided, not by fate, but by the effects of their relationships with their father."

In Crew: Finding Community When Your Dreams Crash, Christin Taylor explores how young adults can both find good company during a time of personal shipwreck and be good company for others who might be experiencing their own shipwreck. In the process, you will learn …

Rewriting The Call To Charity: From Food Shelf Volunteer To Food Justice Advocate, Beth Dixon Jun 2014

Rewriting The Call To Charity: From Food Shelf Volunteer To Food Justice Advocate, Beth Dixon

Food Systems Summit 2014

Consider the food shelf volunteer (or any charity worker) who is inspired to practice good work on behalf of those who are poor and hungry. Her beneficence is praiseworthy. But a simple call to charity may also blind the volunteer to certain facts about food justice. First, it leaves out why clients who utilize the food shelf are hungry. Second, it suggests that the generous volunteers who staff the food shelf have met their political responsibilities. In this viewpoint I argue that hunger relief advocates may be transformed into policy advocates only if they are epistemically positioned to do so. …

Countering Radicalization And Recruitment To Al-Qaeda: Fighting The War Of Deeds, Paul Kamolnick Jun 2014

Countering Radicalization And Recruitment To Al-Qaeda: Fighting The War Of Deeds, Paul Kamolnick

ETSU Authors Bookshelf

This Letort Paper proposes that actions, policies, and deeds—those of the U.S. Government and al-Qaeda—be leveraged as a means of delegitimizing al-Qaeda terrorist propaganda. Two chief fronts—changing deeds and challenging deeds—is proposed. Changing deeds requires that the United States carefully and systematically examine its own foreign and military policies and their specific consequences for the Arab and Muslim world. Challenging deeds comprises systematically countering with evidence and fact al-Qaeda’s two greatest propagandistic fabrications: that the United States is a crusader at war with Islam, and that al-Qaeda is the vanguard defender of a besieged and oppressed Muslim Umma. Provocative at …

The Moroccan Women's Rights Movement, Amy Y. Evrard Jun 2014

The Moroccan Women's Rights Movement, Amy Y. Evrard

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Among various important efforts to address women’s issues in Morocco, a particular set of individuals and associations have formed around two specific goals: reforming the Moroccan Family Code and raising awareness of women’s rights. Evrard chronicles the history of the women’s rights movement, exploring the organizational structure, activities, and motivations with specific attention to questions of legal reform and family law. Employing ethnographic scrutiny, Evrard presents the stories of the individual women behind the movement and the challenges they faced. Given the vast reform of the Moroccan Family Code in 2004, and the emphasis on the role of women across …

Creating The Back Ward: The Triumph Of Custodialism And The Uses Of Therapeutic Failure In Nineteenth Century Idiot Asylums, Philip M. Ferguson May 2014

Creating The Back Ward: The Triumph Of Custodialism And The Uses Of Therapeutic Failure In Nineteenth Century Idiot Asylums, Philip M. Ferguson

Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"My focus in this chapter is on the origin of the back ward rather than its demise. Where did the “back wards” that [Burton] Blatt and [Senator Robert] Kennedy witnessed come from in the first place? What 3 exactly were those “antecedents of the problems observed” that Blatt cited? This chapter reviews that history and argues that, in fact, there is a specific narrative to the evolution of the institutional “back ward” as an identifiable place where people with the most significant intellectual disabilities were to be incarcerated and largely forgotten."
