Religiosity And Depression In College Students By Year In School, Ciara Saylor
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze if there is a relationship between levels of religiosity and levels of depression in college students. This study particularly looks at how this link changes depending on students' year in school. The study in this paper was conducted by surveying 100 college students on their levels of religious attendance, importance of prayer, importance of religious communities, and their feelings towards religious news and events. The study also employed the Zung depression scale to survey the student's mental health and levels of depression. This research can be used to identify what …
We Just Want My People Thriving: Hip Hop As A Catalyst For Social Change In St. Louis, Joel Pettus Iii
We Just Want My People Thriving: Hip Hop As A Catalyst For Social Change In St. Louis, Joel Pettus Iii
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
St. Louis, regularly listed as one of the most segregated cities in the United States, has long been a hotbed of racial tension. As a current resident of St. Louis County, and a former resident of a subsection of St. Louis County called Ferguson, I have witnessed the havoc a history of racism, segregation and violence can wreak on a community. The silver lining of such an environment is the resulting creative talent that focuses its efforts on chronicling its surroundings. In this case, local artists have sought to illustrate St. Louis’ complicated history and uncertain future. Since hip hop …

The Back Pocket Play: Revealing White Privilege And Its Contribution To Institutionalized Racism, Sonia Michelle Goldberg

Black lives matter. This phrase incites intense and polarizing emotions in our community: with it brings images of police brutality. It forces the topic of racism to the forefront of the listener’s mind. And when that listener hardly ever considers issues of race in their daily life, “Black lives matter” easily becomes a hostile phrase, one to shrink away from. Why? This ability to dissociate – to write off uncomfortable situations – is a privilege. In predominately White communities like Butler University, individuals are often hesitant to have a conversation about race, because they believe firmly it is not their …
Undergraduate Students’ Perception Of The Consequences Of Alcohol Consumption, Elaine Giglio
Undergraduate Students’ Perception Of The Consequences Of Alcohol Consumption, Elaine Giglio
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Due to the high-risk outcomes of college drinking, much attention and research has focused on the issues of binge drinking, alcohol overconsumption, and the experience of adverse consequences due to drinking on college campuses. Yet, little research has been conducted regarding how college students perceive the consequences of drinking alcohol. This descriptive study examines students’ perceptions of a number of potential alcohol consequences (e.g., having a hangover, being ticketed or arrested, missing class or an assignment, or getting into a physical fight) and the extent to which they view them as motivators or deterrents to future drinking. An online survey …

Imprisoning Sexuality: The Abuses Of The State In Homosexual Male Incarceration At Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary (1934-1957), Vic Overdorf

Between 1934 and 1957, J. Edgar Hoover - the presiding director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation – signed documents approving the transfer of over twenty military men with a charge of “Sodomy” to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Through the first half of the twentieth century, Alcatraz was notorious for it’s incredibly violent and high profile criminals. Since the island was isolated and conditions were severe, Alcatraz was the designated site for the United States to imprison undesirable people: violent and influential men who they did not want to rejoin society. When considering the legal term “Sodomy”– which in 1934 …
The Media And Teenage Violence: How Much Is Too Much When It Comes To Adolescent Aggression?, Taylor Pearson
The Media And Teenage Violence: How Much Is Too Much When It Comes To Adolescent Aggression?, Taylor Pearson
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
With the advent of increasingly accessible technology and the growing prevalence of both fictional and nonfictional violence in the media (American Academy of Pediatrics 2009; American Psychological Association 2013; Emmons 2013; Pew Research Center 2015), the effects of such content on emotional states and behavioral patterns in youths has garnered a great deal of interest among sociologists, psychologists, and developmental experts. However, the results of existing research are inconclusive and often contradictory (APA 2013; Siegel and Welsh 2017:86-87), providing no clear answer to the question of whether or not this content actually affects viewer behavior. I explore the current body …
Defining Civic Mindedness: A Study Of The Butler Community Arts School, Emma Edick
Defining Civic Mindedness: A Study Of The Butler Community Arts School, Emma Edick
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The term “civic-mindedness” is broad, but it relates to specific experiences and behaviors we, as citizens and members of communities across the country, live out in our daily lives. But what does the term’s definition boil down to? I conducted a study to complete my thesis for the Butler University Honors Program, starting with the question: how is “civic-mindedness” defined in our culture and in what ways do the arts, specifically, impact an individual’s development of civic-mindedness? To answer this question, I focused on the dual mission statement of the Butler Community Arts School (BCAS), which reads, “…providing quality arts …
Conformity To Gender Stereotypes Impacting Body-Esteem, Eating, And Exercise Behaviors In Female College Students, Madison Rae Sauerteig
Conformity To Gender Stereotypes Impacting Body-Esteem, Eating, And Exercise Behaviors In Female College Students, Madison Rae Sauerteig
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Conformity to gender stereotypes and the impacts they may have on body-esteem, eating, and exercise behaviors have always been a very important topic in society because of the mental, physical and emotional problems that could arise. In society today, it is extremely unlikely to go a day without hearing or seeing something about eating healthy, exercising, or performing the correct “role”. With this increased pressure from the media and peers, conforming to the stereotypes in society can impact someone beyond what they may believe possible or even realize. A stereotype is a widely held and oversimplified image or idea of …

The Relationship Between Demographic Characteristics, Types Of Contact With Police, And Perceptions Of Police, Allison Simko
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Police officers play a very important role in their communities, considering they need to interact with the public in order to carry out their duties. For that reason, the relationship between the public and police officers has been the focus of many studies. The current study analyzed data from the 2011 Police-Public Contact Survey (n= 49,246). The study was conducted in three separate parts - the relationship between individual demographic characteristics and type of contact with the police, individual demographic characteristics and perceptions of police, and type of contact with the police and perceptions of the police. The results from …
