Using data from our 2023 Fall Survey of Minnesota Residents, we examine the relationship between partisanship, education, and age on trust in the healthcare system. We also examine the relationship between demographic factors and the likelihood of experiencing discrimination in health care services.

How Do College Students Justify Their Deviant Behavior?, Ryleigh Haynes

The goal of my project is to determine how college students justify their deviant behavior. I used a convenient sample of college students for my survey. Students were asked to report on past actions that they have engaged in and explain their reasoning behind why they did it. Previous research indicates that people are more likely to engage in deviant behavior if they can neutralize the guilt from committing the action or if they make it appear normal. The student responses will be compared to nine common neutralization techniques. My presentation will share the results of this study.

This study explores how Latinxs understand their racial identity and how colorism emerges, develops and evolves in the lives of Latinxs. We want to look into how racial identity affects race and color perceptions and relationships in the community. Data in this study came from 10 individuals who participated through in-person interviews or submitted a paper survey between March 2018 and March 2019. The patterns that emerged in this research demonstrate a challenge and confusion to Latinx racial identity. Familial influence is a way that colorism and racial identity is formed and understood. This study uses a feminist qualitative methodology and conceptual framework to explore the narrative experiences of African women immigrants living in Minnesota. Specifically, the study documents the multifaceted social, economic, and cultural factors that influence the ways in which these women construct and give meaning to their diasporic experiences. Through in-depth interviews of seven African women immigrants, this study explores the challenges that these women face in the process of settling in their ‘new home’ in the state of Minnesota. However, given the relative novelty of social justice as an academic field, there remains a lack of clarity about what exactly social justice encompasses. What principles of inquiry, theory, and practice unify social justice as an academic field? Is there a consistent, coherent conceptualization of social justice and social change agency among social justice faculty? The focus of this work is to examine community gardens in Central Minnesota (specifically within the three-county area of Benton, Sherburne, and Stearns counties). This paper utilizes qualitative methodologies to compare and contrast community gardens in the area, with attention given to historic context, participation (or lack of) within the community gardening movement, and current community values. Emphasis is given to the differentiation between levels of community within the construct of community gardens as social spaces, as well as the development of the concept of the community garden network among the eighteen gardens studied.

This paper analyzes organizations that organize immigrant women to address issues in the workplace. Strategizing differences and policy goals will be analyzed in order to assess which strategies have acquired lasting policy changes that benefit immigrant women. Two organizations in California and Minnesota that are representative of the different types of groups that organize women immigrant workers will be examined. This study uses a qualitative research methodology approach to explore the conflict of interest among coastal resource users and the development process in Bagamoyo town. The samples were purposively chosen to reflect the diversity of environmental conditions, socio-economic status and opportunities available to local coastal communities like fishing and farming. The total number of respondents interviewed for this study was thirty-three. I used narrative stories through in-depth interviews of the respondents, documented information and a focus group comprising of 10 respondents, who did not participate in the in-depth interviews, to discuss the issues.
