Knowledge And Attitudes Of College Students Concerning Hiv/Aids, Anita Ihuwan

The purpose of this study was to learn more about the knowledge and attitudes of college students concerning HIV/AIDS. Further investigation of this topic sought to provide insight into the perspective of college students. This study utilized a convenience sample of 25 students at a Midwestern university. Participants were administered questionnaires featuring questions concerning their knowledge and attitudes towards HIV/AIDS. Findings indicated that although the majority of participants believed they were well educated about HIV/AIDS, their response to knowledge questions showed otherwise. Findings also indicated that students would like to see more HIV programming on their campus. The implications of …

The Cast-Iron Grave Cover: A Case Of Mistaken Identity And Identity Found, Gary Foster, William Lovekamp, Steven Di Naso, Grant Woods

An object, tentatively identified as a cast-iron casket lid, appeared to be eroding out of the ground in an east-central Illinois rural cemetery. Appropriate authorities were notified in the anticipation of re-interment, but subsequent research determined that the object was a cast-iron grave cover, a rare and scarcely recognized mortuary accoutrement. The revelation afforded the opportunity to systematically examine a mid-nineteenth centurydeath custom and artifact, and to ultimately reunite the grave cover and its associated grave with its dislocated gravestone.

Since the 1990s, safe space initiatives, such as Safe Zone, have been developed on college campuses across the United States as a way of educating participants on LGBTQ-related issues and how to become a better ally/advocate for the LGBTQ community. Homosexual males want to be a part of a social fraternity for the same reasons heterosexual males want to join a social fraternity, however, homosexual males going through recruitment could soon be welcomed into an environment that is not supportive of homosexual males. Decades of research in Social Psychology have demonstrated that political intolerance is not displayed equally with respect to ideology. In particular, conservatives and those with right-wing beliefs are much more likely to display intolerant judgments than those with liberal or left-wing beliefs. This "prejudice gap" has been found to be so ubiquitous that it is now the conventional wisdom regarding the relationship between ideology and intolerance. However, a small, but growing literature challenges this presumed ideological asymmetry and has instead found that liberals and conservatives display intolerance under certain circumstances. A comparison of mandated and altruistic volunteers that completed community service hours was conducted. Participants were enrolled at a mid-sized, mid-Western university. T-test and correlational analysis were conducted on data gathered through the Community Service Attitudinal Scale (2000). The data was used to compare and contrast the characteristics of mandated and altruistic volunteers. Mandated volunteers (M = 5.73, SD = 1.40) reported feeling like they were not making as much of an impact performing community service compared to altruistic volunteers (M = 6.61, SD = 1.17) at significance level (t(72) = 2.88, p< 0.01). Previous research emphasizes the benefits associated with having open gay and lesbian employees. However, many gay and lesbian employees still remain in the closet. This project examines barriers preventing gay and lesbian individuals from coming out at work. Four lesbian women and three gay men in the early stages of their careers were interviewed about their experiences of being closeted at work. Analysis reveals four barriers preventing gay and lesbian individuals from coming out at work and explores how these barriers are reinforced by informal organizational communication. The purpose of this study was to examine how moral judgments differ towards substance abusers and unfaithful spouses. Furthermore, the study compared judgments regarding the gender of the transgressor, the transgressor's willingness to go to counseling, and the participant's level of religiosity. Participants in the study were provided with a scenario describing a substance abuse transgression or an infidelity transgression followed by a survey of questions inquiring about their judgments towards the transgressor. Results indicated individuals judge a transgressor more harshly in an infidelity transgression compared to a substance abuse transgression.
