Wavelet-Based Functional Mixed Models To Characterize Population Heterogeneity In Accelerometer Profiles: A Case Study. , Jeffrey S. Morris, Cassandra Arroyo, Brent A. Coull, Louise M. Ryan, Steven L. Gortmaker
Jeffrey S. Morris
We present a case study illustrating the challenges of analyzing accelerometer data taken from a sample of children participating in an intervention study designed to increase physical activity. An accelerometer is a small device worn on the hip that records the minute-by-minute activity levels of the child throughout the day for each day it is worn. The resulting data are irregular functions characterized by many peaks representing short bursts of intense activity. We model these data using the wavelet-based functional mixed model. This approach incorporates multiple fixed effects and random effect functions of arbitrary form, the estimates of which are …
International Trade In The San Bernardino Region: Transportation, Trends, And Employment, Mirya R. Holman, Travis Coan
International Trade In The San Bernardino Region: Transportation, Trends, And Employment, Mirya R. Holman, Travis Coan
Mirya R Holman
International trade presents significant employment, growth, and revenue opportunities for the San Bernardino region, which encompasses San Bernardino County and several cities in Riverside County and is located to the immediate east of Los Angeles County. Proximity to the San Pedro Bay Port complex (which includes the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach) and access to a transportation and logistics network expanding out across the U.S., makes the San Bernardino region a prime location for companies participating in international trade activity. The purpose of this report is to quantify trade activity in the region, while also estimating the employment …

Soldiers And Wayward Women: Gendered Citizenship, And Migration Policy In Argentina, Italy, And Spain Since 1850, David Cook-Martín
David Cook-Martín
Policies that regulate peoples international movement and their state membership have historically made distinctions based on perceived sexual differences, but little is known about the process by which this has happened. This paper explores how and with what consequences migration and nationality policies have been gendered in two quintessential countries of emigration (Italy and Spain), and in a country of immigrants (Argentina) over a 150-year period. I argue that these migration and nationality policies have reflected the dynamics of the political fields in which they have been crafted. Especially before the Great War, laws and official practices that showed a …
Towards A Bibliography Of Critical Whiteness Studies, Tim Engles
Towards A Bibliography Of Critical Whiteness Studies, Tim Engles
Tim Engles
As the title implies, this book offers a multi-disciplinary overview of the explosion of work in scholarly critical whiteness studies. The contributing bibliographers acknowledge that this work follows and builds upon a great deal of whiteness critique previously provided by African American writers, and by those writing from other racialized positions. Each section provides a solid introduction to key concepts and practices regarding whiteness in a particular field, including: philosophy, history, literature, cinema, the visual arts, psychology, education, media studies, qualitative inquiry, personal narratives, and international and comparative approaches.

On The Structure Of Competitive Societies, E. Ben-Naim, F. Vazquez, S. Redner
On The Structure Of Competitive Societies, E. Ben-Naim, F. Vazquez, S. Redner
Eli Ben-Naim
We model the dynamics of social structure by a simple interacting particle system. The social standing of an individual agent is represented by an integer-valued fitness that changes via two offsetting processes. When two agents interact one advances: the fitter with probability p and the less fit with probability 1-p. The fitness of an agent may also decline with rate r. From a scaling analysis of the underlying master equations for the fitness distribution of the population, we find four distinct social structures as a function of the governing parameters p and r. These include: (i) a static lower-class society …

Mental Health Care In Rural Communities: The Once And Future Role Of Primary Care., David Lambert
Mental Health Care In Rural Communities: The Once And Future Role Of Primary Care., David Lambert
David Lambert
The provision of mental healthcare in rural communities has been a vexing challenge for clinicians and patients for many years. There is a chronic shortage of specialty mental health providers, particularly psychiatrists and sychologists, which has shifted much of the burden of care to primary care. Primary care clinicians have historically lacked the training and time within their busy practices to feel comfortable providing mental healthcare, particularly since the shortage of specialty mental health clinicians deprives them of consultation and referral sources.
Service Learning Outcomes Research: Replications, A Forgotten Species, Howard M. Henderson
Service Learning Outcomes Research: Replications, A Forgotten Species, Howard M. Henderson
Howard M Henderson
The effect of service-learning on college and university students has attracted considerable scholarly attention in the last decade. However, few attempts to replicate studies are conducted. The purpose of the research reported in this article is threefold: (1) to assess the reliability of a modified version of Kelly, Chase, and Tucker's (1979) taxonomy to discriminate accurately between sub-categories of replication in studies of service-learning outcomes; (2) to determine the extent of replications in the service-learning outcomes literature; and (3) to make recommendations based on the study's results. The research sample consists of data-based articles published in peer-reviewed journals between[space] 1993 …

El Resurgimiento De La Sociología Pública, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas
Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Streets Not Named: Discursive Dead Ends And The Politics Of Orientation In Intercommunal Spatial Relations In Northern Greece, Olga Demetriou
Olga Demetriou
In light of recent discussions on the anthropology of space and theories of governmentality, this article analyzes the entrenchment and interaction in space of ethnic and national identities in an environment in which competing conceptualizations of space persist. The town of Komotini, in northern Greece, is inhabited by both Greek and Turkish speakers; both communities have claims to a variety of ethnic and geographical origins. These claims are presented in different contexts, such as national celebrations, street naming, and instances of communal and intercommunal interaction. The article analyzes how the claims of different actors are related through the examination of …
The Evolution Of Education Has Not Been Televised: Educational Inequalities And The Impact Of Change, Andree Robinson-Neal
The Evolution Of Education Has Not Been Televised: Educational Inequalities And The Impact Of Change, Andree Robinson-Neal
Andree Robinson-Neal
The historical evolution of education and impact of its inequalities have not been televised. The world is more often exposed to “overcomology” —society’s assertion that oppressed peoples or so-called minorities have overcome past injustices and are now able to access the same educational opportunities as so-called majority groups. This paper provides a Gil Scott-Heron-esque review of the effects of inequalities on this key social institution.
Taxing Illegal Assets: The Revenue Work Of The Criminal Assets Bureau, Liz Campbell
Taxing Illegal Assets: The Revenue Work Of The Criminal Assets Bureau, Liz Campbell
Liz Campbell
This article considers the powers of the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) in the context of revenue law, as this lesser-known aspect of the Bureau’s work is often overshadowed by its ability to seize and confiscate the proceeds of crime. Although the taxing of illegal profits was traditionally precluded in Ireland, this situation was altered in the early-1980s, thereby facilitating CAB’s revenue work. Despite CAB’s significant powers in this regard, the courts have overturned its tax assessments in a number of cases, on the basis that certain criteria pertaining to its tax powers have been breached. Nevertheless, CAB’s ability to pursue …
The Evidence Of Intimidated Witnesses In Criminal Trials, Liz Campbell
The Evidence Of Intimidated Witnesses In Criminal Trials, Liz Campbell
Liz Campbell
The issue of witness intimidation has gained currency in the Irish criminal justice system in recent years with the increase in so-called “gangland” crime. The brutal treatment used by organised criminals to resolve gangland feuds is echoed in the threats received by individuals who seek to testify against suspected organised criminals. This article examines various approaches have been adopted by the State to ensure that the evidence of threatened witnesses may be used in court. While some witnesses may participate in the Witness Protection Programme (WPP), others may give evidence by means of video-camera. In addition, even if an intimidated …
Decline Of Due Process In The Irish Justice System: Beyond The Culture Of Control?, Liz Campbell
Decline Of Due Process In The Irish Justice System: Beyond The Culture Of Control?, Liz Campbell
Liz Campbell
Legislation in Ireland that pertains to serious and organised crime is characterised by a favouring of public protection over the rights of the accused; by an increased concern for security with a concomitant diminution of the significance of liberty. Throughout the pre-trial stage of the criminal process, the court-hearing and sentencing, a shift in focus from the due process rights of the accused towards the result-oriented aims of the State is apparent. Furthermore, the fight against organised crime has extended into the civil domain with the creation of the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), with its low burden of proof and …

Weighty Speech: Addressing Body Size In The Classroom, Yofi Tirosh
Weighty Speech: Addressing Body Size In The Classroom, Yofi Tirosh
Yofi Tirosh
The politics of body size has been the topic of intriguing feminist work. Although in my view this issue is still undertheorized, I have long sought for a way to bring what does exist in the literature into my academic activities. The opportunity arose when, as a graduate student at the University of Michigan in 2001, I taught an undergraduate mini-course in the women's studies program, which I named Weight as a Cultural Question.
This essay discusses two pedagogical challenges I faced while teaching a class. Both questions deal with the extent to which it is productive to talk about …
The Recognition Of Same-Sex Relationships: Comparative Institutional Analysis, Contested Social Goals, And Strategic Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer
The Recognition Of Same-Sex Relationships: Comparative Institutional Analysis, Contested Social Goals, And Strategic Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer
Nancy J. Knauer
The emerging field of comparative institutional analysis (CIA) has much to offer public policy analysts. However, the failure of CIA to address the dynamic process through which social goals are articulated limits the scope of its application to the largely prescriptive pronouncements of legal scholars. By examining the movement for equal recognition of same-sex relationships, this Essay builds on the basic observations of CIA and introduces a new dimension, namely the dynamic process through which social goals are articulated and social change is pursued. The acknowledgment that the production of social goals involves institutional behavior, as well as multiple sites …
Dewey: The First Ghost-Buster?, Leslie Marsh
Dewey: The First Ghost-Buster?, Leslie Marsh
Leslie Marsh
Ghost-busting, or less colloquially, anti-Cartesianism or non-representationalism, is a loose and internally fluid coalition (philosophical and empirical) comprising Dynamical, Embodied, Extended, Distributed, and Situated (DEEDS) theories of cognition. Gilbert Ryle – DEEDS’ anglophonic masthead [1] – supposedly exorcised the Cartesian propensity to postulate mind as an apparition-like entity somehow situated in the body. Ryle’s behaviouristic recommendation was, that just as we don’t see the wind blowing but only see the trees waving, so too should we conceive intelligence as manifest though action. The Cartesian ghost of old has mutated, taking the form of the ‘Machine in the Machine’, the brain …
