This article offers a critical analysis of the development and dissolution of neoliberalism and neoconservatism, with emphasis on the role of popular resistance in bringing about the collapse of both forms of imperial domination. Responding to the brutal realities of the post-Cold War "new world order," opposition to neoliberal globalization grew over the 1990s, culminating in the protests against the 1999 meetings of the World Trade Organization in Seattle. A simple time line of events is illustrative. In 1933, [Hitler] informed [Neville Chamberlain]'s British ambassador of a desire to rectify Germany's eastern borders. Despite this, a 1935 treaty between England and Germany "permitted" Germany to build up its navy in defiance of Versailles. In 1936, Germany formed an alliance with Japan--the Anti-Comintern Pact--which Italy joined the following year. In 1937, Chamberlain's foreign minister, Lord Halifax, praised Germany as "a bulwark of the West against Bolshevism." This contribution to the sociology of sociology offers an empirical evaluation of a comprehensive class-analytic explanation for structured and temporal intellectual diversity in sociological theory and analysis. In an articulation of the arguments of Chertok (1990) and Szymanski (1985), it is suggested that the structured diversity of the discipline is a function of class structure, and that "metatheoretical shifts" — systematic changes in the paradigmatic underpinnings and the categorical structure of sociological theories and analyses — are a function of the vitality of social movements. Is Physical Activity Leisure Or Work? Exploring The Leisure-Tourism-Physical Activity Relationship With Holidaymakers On Rottnest Island, Ruth Sibson, Pascal Scherrer, Maria Ryan, Nadine Henley, Lynnaire Sheridan

To help overcome preventable health problems in the developed world, the 'active living' concept seeks to stimulate people's physical activity in every day environments. This study contributes to the understanding of the leisure-tourism-physical activity relationship by investigating the self-reported physical activity of holiday makers on Rottnest Island, Western Australia, compared to their home environment. The quantitative analysis of 41 participant interviews on behaviour, motivation and constraints revealed that physical activity was seen as leisure on Rottnest but work at home. A uniquely attractive and easily accessible environment and positive social interactions were key contributors to participation in physical activity.

Physical inactivity is one of the major contributors to ill health and, hence, productivity costs in Australia. While the workplace is increasingly recognised as an appropriate site for promoting healthy behaviour, the effectiveness of workplace physical activity programs remains to be demonstrated, particularly with regards to participants' motivation to achieve sustained positive physical activity behaviour change. This exploratory study examined how participation in the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) affected participants' motivation to sustain regular physical activity. Many reporters and scholars outside China advocate the privatization of land ownership in China as a necessary step for the transformation of China's agriculture system into a modern, large-scale, market-oriented and technology-intensive one. Chinese scholars advocating land privatization, for their part, typically argue that land privatization would better protect farmers’ rights and interests. We present a contrarian view to these calls for land privatization. Under China's current system of collective land ownership and individualized land use rights, agriculture has modernized rapidly in China in a way that has avoided privatization's many downsides. This paper utilizes an original dataset to comparatively analyze the 2010 mayoral election in Oakland and 2011 mayoral election in San Francisco. Most modern theories suggest that interpersonal relationships are of central importance in the development of criminal behavior. We tested the parent attachment scales of a new research and clinical measure, the Attachment and Clinical Issues Questionnaire (ACIQ;Lindberg & Thomas, 2011). It is a 29 scale battery assessing attachments to mother, father, partner, and peers, which also includes several related clinical scales. Sixty-one males (18-20 years of age) from a maximum security detention center and 131 contrasts completed the ACIQ. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that mother and father attachments displayed different patterns. The attachment scales also predicted the numbers of …
