The Failure Of Neoliberal Globalization And The End Of Empire: Neoliberalism, Imperialism, And The Rise Of The Anti-Globalization Movement, Martin Orr Oct 2013

The Failure Of Neoliberal Globalization And The End Of Empire: Neoliberalism, Imperialism, And The Rise Of The Anti-Globalization Movement, Martin Orr

Martin Orr

This article offers a critical analysis of the development and dissolution of neoliberalism and neoconservatism, with emphasis on the role of popular resistance in bringing about the collapse of both forms of imperial domination. Responding to the brutal realities of the post-Cold War "new world order," opposition to neoliberal globalization grew over the 1990s, culminating in the protests against the 1999 meetings of the World Trade Organization in Seattle. Having successfully blocked the machinations of the leading capitalist powers for world domination, Seattle served as a model for a series of worldwide protests and demonstrations that, despite state repression and …

Emergence Of "The Lone Superpower": Implications For Exploitation, Repression, And Resistance, Martin Orr Oct 2013

Emergence Of "The Lone Superpower": Implications For Exploitation, Repression, And Resistance, Martin Orr

Martin Orr

A simple time line of events is illustrative. In 1933, [Hitler] informed [Neville Chamberlain]'s British ambassador of a desire to rectify Germany's eastern borders. Despite this, a 1935 treaty between England and Germany "permitted" Germany to build up its navy in defiance of Versailles. In 1936, Germany formed an alliance with Japan--the Anti-Comintern Pact--which Italy joined the following year. In 1937, Chamberlain's foreign minister, Lord Halifax, praised Germany as "a bulwark of the West against Bolshevism." In 1938, Chamberlain propagated Hitler's lie of an uncoerced unification of Germany and Austria. Later that year, in meetings that gave up Czechoslovakia, Hitler …

The Paradigmatic Underpinnings And The Categorical Structure Of Sociology, 1973-1994: An Explanation For And Documentation Of Metatheoretical Shift, Martin Orr Oct 2013

The Paradigmatic Underpinnings And The Categorical Structure Of Sociology, 1973-1994: An Explanation For And Documentation Of Metatheoretical Shift, Martin Orr

Martin Orr

This contribution to the sociology of sociology offers an empirical evaluation of a comprehensive class-analytic explanation for structured and temporal intellectual diversity in sociological theory and analysis. In an articulation of the arguments of Chertok (1990) and Szymanski (1985), it is suggested that the structured diversity of the discipline is a function of class structure, and that "metatheoretical shifts" — systematic changes in the paradigmatic underpinnings and the categorical structure of sociological theories and analyses — are a function of the vitality of social movements. A quantitative analysis of the conceptual content of the Sociological Abstracts on CD-ROM ("Sociofile") documents …

Is Physical Activity Leisure Or Work? Exploring The Leisure-Tourism-Physical Activity Relationship With Holidaymakers On Rottnest Island, Ruth Sibson, Pascal Scherrer, Maria Ryan, Nadine Henley, Lynnaire Sheridan Aug 2013

Is Physical Activity Leisure Or Work? Exploring The Leisure-Tourism-Physical Activity Relationship With Holidaymakers On Rottnest Island, Ruth Sibson, Pascal Scherrer, Maria Ryan, Nadine Henley, Lynnaire Sheridan

Maria M Ryan

To help overcome preventable health problems in the developed world, the 'active living' concept seeks to stimulate people's physical activity in every day environments. This study contributes to the understanding of the leisure-tourism-physical activity relationship by investigating the self-reported physical activity of holiday makers on Rottnest Island, Western Australia, compared to their home environment. The quantitative analysis of 41 participant interviews on behaviour, motivation and constraints revealed that physical activity was seen as leisure on Rottnest but work at home. A uniquely attractive and easily accessible environment and positive social interactions were key contributors to participation in physical activity.

Global Corporate Challenge Qualitative Research Project: The Effect Of A Workplace Team Initiative On Participants' Motivation To Sustain A Physical Activity Program, Nadine Henley, Pascal Scherrer, Ruth Sibson, Lynnaire Sheridan, Susanne Bahn, Maria Ryan, Raguragavan Ganeshasundaram Aug 2013

Global Corporate Challenge Qualitative Research Project: The Effect Of A Workplace Team Initiative On Participants' Motivation To Sustain A Physical Activity Program, Nadine Henley, Pascal Scherrer, Ruth Sibson, Lynnaire Sheridan, Susanne Bahn, Maria Ryan, Raguragavan Ganeshasundaram

Maria M Ryan

Physical inactivity is one of the major contributors to ill health and, hence, productivity costs in Australia. While the workplace is increasingly recognised as an appropriate site for promoting healthy behaviour, the effectiveness of workplace physical activity programs remains to be demonstrated, particularly with regards to participants' motivation to achieve sustained positive physical activity behaviour change. This exploratory study examined how participation in the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) affected participants' motivation to sustain regular physical activity. The GCC is a commercially operated four-month program based on the 10,000 steps-a-day concept. Three distinct phases in terms of participant motivation were identified …

“I Think It Is Fun Because Of Where You Are‟: People's Experiences Of Physical Activity On Rottnest Island, Wa, Ruth Sibson, Maria Ryan, Pascal Scherrer, Lynnaire Sheridan, Justine Nagorski, Nadine Henley, Raguragavan Ganeshasundaram

Maria M Ryan

Many holiday destinations provide people with different social, cultural and natural environments that promote opportunities for participation in a range of physical activities. Holiday-makers also generally have more commitment-free time which can provide for increased levels of physical activity. There has, however, been limited research which explores the link between holiday-makers and physical activity and, more specifically, how an individual’s leisure behaviour is influenced by their social and physical environments. This paper explores people’s physical activity experiences on the popular, and fairly unique, holiday destination of Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth, WA. Thirty intercept interviews were conducted with …

Handbook Of Family Diversity, Virginia Rutter, Pepper Schwartz Jun 2013

Handbook Of Family Diversity, Virginia Rutter, Pepper Schwartz

Virginia Rutter

The status of the American family has been the topic of considerable debate in recent years. As demographic changes make our country more multicultural and as new types of families continue to form and become more common, it is essential for sociologists, social workers, family researchers, and psychologists to understand the full range of diversity in American families. However, to varying extents, African American families, Latino families, Asian American families, poverty-stricken and near-poor families, lesbian and gay families, single-parent families, and stepfamilies have been marginalized from mainstream scholarship. As a result, students taking courses on families are typically not exposed …

China's Agrarian Reform And The Privatization Of Land: A Contrarian View , Qian (Forrest) Zhang, John Andrew Donaldson May 2013

China's Agrarian Reform And The Privatization Of Land: A Contrarian View , Qian (Forrest) Zhang, John Andrew Donaldson

John Donaldson

Many reporters and scholars outside China advocate the privatization of land ownership in China as a necessary step for the transformation of China's agriculture system into a modern, large-scale, market-oriented and technology-intensive one. Chinese scholars advocating land privatization, for their part, typically argue that land privatization would better protect farmers’ rights and interests. We present a contrarian view to these calls for land privatization. Under China's current system of collective land ownership and individualized land use rights, agriculture has modernized rapidly in China in a way that has avoided privatization's many downsides. Land privatization, by contrast, would only exacerbate class …

Comparing Local Models Of Agrarian Transition In China, Qian Forrest Zhang May 2013

Comparing Local Models Of Agrarian Transition In China, Qian Forrest Zhang

Qian Forrest ZHANG

The development of markets and the penetration of capital into agriculture have started the agrarian transition in rural China, which is transforming smallholding, household-based agriculture into various forms of capitalistic production. This again raises in a new historical and social context the long-debated question in the agrarian transition literature: Can family farms survive the onslaught of capitalist agriculture based on wage labor and what shapes the confrontation between family farms and agro-capital? I argue that it is the local political economy—rather than some natural obstacles in agriculture to the penetration of capitalism—that shapes this confrontation and gives rise to a …

International Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink Apr 2013

International Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Military memoirs are written in many western countries, but who writes them, who publishes them, what is written in them and why they are written can differ from country to country. Some aspects, such as the low number of female writers, are universal, other aspects are warrior nation related, such as the kind of soldiers that get published by traditional publishers, and some aspects are completely country dependent, such as whether reservists publish books, or not. This presentation, given to the PSP (Power, Space and Politics) research group at Newcastle University, gives a quick overview of some of the results …

Journalism In A Pr World, Michael I. Niman Ph.D. Apr 2013

Journalism In A Pr World, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.

Michael I Niman Ph.D.

Mike Niman discusses the future of journalism in a PR-dominated communication environment. In particular, he examines the migration of talent from journalism to the PR industry, the collapse of mainstream journalism and the role of an emergent alternative media as American journalism goes through metamorphosis from what it was to what it could become. Journalism is a social good that should equip people to understand and resist spin. Niman argues that mainstream American journalism, rather than rising to this challenge, has transparently succumbed to serving as an arm of the corporate PR industry, thus laying the groundwork for its own …

The Attachment And Clinical Issues Questionnaire (Aciq): A New Methodology For Science And Practice In Criminology And Forensics, Marc Lindberg Mar 2013

The Attachment And Clinical Issues Questionnaire (Aciq): A New Methodology For Science And Practice In Criminology And Forensics, Marc Lindberg

Marc A. Lindberg Ph.D.

Most modern theories suggest that interpersonal relationships are of central importance in the development of criminal behavior. We tested the parent attachment scales of a new research and clinical measure, the Attachment and Clinical Issues Questionnaire (ACIQ;Lindberg & Thomas, 2011). It is a 29 scale battery assessing attachments to mother, father, partner, and peers, which also includes several related clinical scales. Sixty-one males (18-20 years of age) from a maximum security detention center and 131 contrasts completed the ACIQ. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that mother and father attachments displayed different patterns. The attachment scales also predicted the numbers of …
