Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe Oct 1972

Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe

Dissertations and Theses

Northeast Brazil is a region characterized by economic poverty and human misery. Poor ecological conditions contribute to the nature of the dilemma, but another factor in the apparent cultural stagnation of the Northeast, may be the persistence of values and social practices traditionally aligned with the colonial sugar plantation system. Thus, this thesis represents an examination of the continuity of a given pattern, the man/patron relationship. This pattern is a contemporary parallel to the master/slave relationship which was the key to understanding of the social system of the colonial period. An historical overview reveals the nature of the traditional system, …

Toward A Measurement Of The Adequacy Of Health Services In Rural Utah, Michael K. Miller May 1972

Toward A Measurement Of The Adequacy Of Health Services In Rural Utah, Michael K. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The research reported in this thesis was an exploratory nature undertaken for the purpose of developing a measure of the adequacy of health services in three rural counties in Utah. The three counties included in the study area were Beaver, Piute, and Wayne.

Adequacy of health services in the three-county area was measured on the basis of (1) the general population's, or consumer's, perception of the adequacy of the existing services, (2) the professional's or provider's perception of the adequacy of the existing services, and (3) adequacy of the existing services determined by a comparison with an established standard.

Sikaiana Oral Stories

The Story of Tehui Atahu

This is a transcript and translation of 12 pages given to me by Edwin Huilani on Sikaiana, in 1981-2. The story is about the founder hero of Sikaiana, Tehui Atahu. The back page of the manuscript is dated August 1972. Although I do not know the source, the story follows closely the stories that I heard on Sikaiana, although there are several different versions with minor differences. The original and translation should be of interest to Sikaiana people and might be an aid in language preservation.

Population Profiles By Factor Analysis: Study Of A Rural Arkansas Community, Mary Jo Grinstead, Sandra Scholtz Jan 1972

Population Profiles By Factor Analysis: Study Of A Rural Arkansas Community, Mary Jo Grinstead, Sandra Scholtz

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Factor analysis was used as a preliminary data analytic technique to delineate population profiles in a rural, poverty-level community. The technique was useful in defining the nature of sociological interdependencies in the population so that the heterogeneity in the community could be understood. Four factors identified as representing socio-economic status, age-work attitudes, morality, and participation dimensions were extracted from the correlation matrix.

The Women's Liberation Movement And Identity Change : An Urban Pilot Study, Molly M. Doeneka Jan 1972

The Women's Liberation Movement And Identity Change : An Urban Pilot Study, Molly M. Doeneka

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in Women's Liberation results in identity change in the individual participants. As a pilot study, it examines the characteristic experiences of a study group of twenty-six local participants and compares the effects of their participation with a theoretical model of identity change process proposed by Ward H. Goodenough in Cooperation in Change. According to this model the process of identity change is a consequence of specific kinds of realizations fostered by a series of definable stages which are: 1) achieving a desire for identity change, 2) making a commitment to …
