How To Enhance Qualitative Research Appraisal: Development Of The Methodological Congruence Instrument, Annette M. Willgens, Robin Cooper, Doles Jadotte, Bruce Lilyea, Cynthia L. Langtiw, Alice Obenchain-Leeson

The Qualitative Report

In this research report, we introduce a methodological congruence instrument (MCI) that addresses the five major qualitative research traditions. Methodological congruence is a "fit" between the researcher's chosen methodology and his/her philosophical perspective. The chosen methodology should be aligned with the research question, data collection and sampling procedures, philosophical perspectives and seminal authors, data analysis, and findings. These elements are contained in the MCI. We share information about its inception, development, and application, and invite our research colleagues to offer critical feedback. It is our hope that qualitative researchers, editorial board members, teachers, and students find this instrument helpful and …

Qualitative Health Research Involving Indigenous Peoples: Culturally Appropriate Data Collection Methods, Amy L. Wright, Olive Wahoush, Marilyn Ballantyne, Chelsea Gabel, Susan M. Jack Dec 2016

Qualitative Health Research Involving Indigenous Peoples: Culturally Appropriate Data Collection Methods, Amy L. Wright, Olive Wahoush, Marilyn Ballantyne, Chelsea Gabel, Susan M. Jack

The Qualitative Report

Historically, health research involving Indigenous peoples has been fraught with problems, including researchers not addressing Indigenous research priorities and then subsequently often failing to utilize culturally appropriate methods. Given this historical precedence, some Indigenous populations may be reluctant to participate in research projects. In response to these concerns, the Government of Canada has developed the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS2): Research Involving the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples of Canada, which stipulates the requirements for research collaborations with Indigenous communities. Utilizing this policy as an ethical standard for research practices, this paper describes, critiques and synthesizes the literature on culturally …

Focus Group Data Saturation: A New Approach To Data Analysis, Mary E. Hancock Phd, Rnc-Ob, Linda Amankwaa Phd, Rn, Faan, Maria A. Revell Phd, Msn, Rn Coi, Dale Mueller Edd, Msn, Nea-Bc Nov 2016

Focus Group Data Saturation: A New Approach To Data Analysis, Mary E. Hancock Phd, Rnc-Ob, Linda Amankwaa Phd, Rn, Faan, Maria A. Revell Phd, Msn, Rn Coi, Dale Mueller Edd, Msn, Nea-Bc

The Qualitative Report

The qualitative research “gold standard” for quality research is data saturation. The limited literature on reporting data saturation and transparency in qualitative research has supported an inconsistent research standard suggesting researchers have not adequately reported data saturation to promote transparency (O’Reilly & Parker, 2012). Confusion regarding how to analyze qualitative data to achieve data saturation, how to write clear qualitative research findings, and present these findings in a usable manner continues (Sandelowski & Leeman, 2012). A phenomenological asynchronous online focus group using WordPress® was employed to answer the research question. Based on the current literature on the topic of focus …

Using Paired Depth Interviews To Collect Qualitative Data, Angie D. Wilson, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Lashondra P. Manning Sep 2016

Using Paired Depth Interviews To Collect Qualitative Data, Angie D. Wilson, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Lashondra P. Manning

The Qualitative Report

In this manuscript, the authors discuss using paired depth interviews as a method of collecting qualitative data.Paired depth interviewing—also known as paired interviewing—is defined as one researcher interviewing two people together (Houssart & Evens, 2011) for the purposes of collecting information about how the pair perceives the same event or phenomenon (Arksey, 1996). Although this form of interviewing has much potential as a data collection tool, it has received scant attention in the qualitative research literature. Thus, the purpose of this article is to provide a framework for using paired depth interviews as a method of collecting qualitative data. In …

Into The Depths Of Reflexivity And Back Again—When Research Mirrors Personal Experience: A Personal Journey Into The Spaces Of Liminality, Katherine Janzen

The Qualitative Report

The context of this paper surrounds my Master’s thesis which was written in 2010 related to recovering crack cocaine addicted mothers who had lost custody of their children. Every qualitative thesis has a story attached to it—an impetus for engaging in the research. When the research combines sensitive topics and the research mirrors the experience of the researcher, decisions must be made considering the research processes and methods. This paper explores the reflexive processes that were employed in the 10 months preceding taking my first thesis course. Using the preface of my reflexive journal as data, three themes arose from …

Essentials Of Publishing Qualitative Research: A Book Review, Lesley Noel

The Qualitative Report

As a new doctoral student, I reviewed Allen’s (2016) book, Essentials of Publishing Qualitative Research, to determine how the author crafted an accessible text for beginning qualitative researchers as well as more seasoned researchers. The absence of specialized jargon and appropriately inserted comic relief gives this book an inviting feel. The comprehensive coverage from dissertation to article audiences, selecting journals, through to marketing your book makes this a must-have, “publishing for dummies” guide for qualitative researchers that I would describe as the next best thing to handholding through the various phases of publishing.

Asking Questions In The Qualitative Research Context, Francislê Neri De Souza, Dayse Cristine Dantas De Souza Brito Neri, António Pedro Costa

The Qualitative Report

Research is based on a constant questioning process. All researchers should ask questions in every research phase, what is read, the research design definition, data analysed and the way they are discussed and how their conclusions are drawn. It is generally accepted that to start scientific research, irrespectively of the area of expertise, the starting point is the drafting of one or more research questions, ordinarily known as a research problem. However, for many, starting with a research programme, the idea of formulating one is always a challenge. Some do not know where to start and question whether the question …
