With a shift in education today toward increased student talk, collaboration, and ownership of learning, the words that teachers choose to weave throughout their instruction and interactions with students are even more crucial. The purpose of this qualitative multi-case study was to explore the shift in students’ mindsets within an environment thick with process-oriented language with a focus on the inevitability of problems while learning. We analyse the importance of meaningful learning and the use of a formative assessment strategy, promoted by peer learning methods centred on the students, in a curricular unit (CU) pertaining to a degree in Exact Sciences, in a Higher Education Institution. Five students from the CU were questioned, through a focus group; the teacher was interviewed. Data of 12 hours of lessons was analysed and categorised using webQDA.
