Post secondary educational institutions are increasingly becoming aware of how non cognitive (academic) barriers can and in too many cases do impact student success negatively. This presentation will focus on how Marion Technical College has addressed this issue. The presenter will discuss how a food pantry and clothing closet were created. She will also discuss the role of a student resource navigator in helping address non cognitive barriers.

Families who reside in rural communities and live in poverty often experience a lack of quality of life supports, which impacts their mental health and exasperates any special needs they may have. Research in regards to these concerns, has historically focused on southern states and or the impacts of poverty in urban settings. This phenomenological qualitative research study reveals quality of life supports that impoverished families living in rural communities in Central Illinois often do without. The Director of Culture & Services and the Director of Safety & Security for a Colorado School district with 27,000 students will share tools, techniques, and experiences, which have cultivated restorative practices (RP) in their district. The presenters will discuss the effectiveness of proactive techniques, provide successful alternatives to traditional punishment, conduct a simulated restorative expulsion hearing, and highlight the district’s partnership with Teen Court.
