"This Is How The West Ends": A Content Analysis Of Conservative Youtubers Notions Of Western Excellence, Michelle Johnson Apr 2024

"This Is How The West Ends": A Content Analysis Of Conservative Youtubers Notions Of Western Excellence, Michelle Johnson

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2024

In 2023, YouTube was one of the most used social media platforms in the United States alone. While existing scholarship (Finlayson 2022) has observed linkages between right-wing social media and distrust in institutions of government, family, and others, I seek to understand how conservatives use YouTube as a means to teach their audience racialized, gendered, and nationalistic ideas about the Western hegemonic order. To examine this issue, I conducted an in-depth qualitative content analysis of three key conservative content creators: Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, and Michael Knowles. Two videos were chosen within each creator's profile using keyword searches such as …

Vaccinate: Posters From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Aaron Sutherlen, Judy Diamond, Meghan Leadabrand, Julia Mcquillan, St Patrick Reid

Zea E-Books Collection

In 2022 we are living through a global pandemic, and vaccines are one of the most effective strategies for slowing the spread of infectious disease, minimizing symptoms, and lowering healthcare demands. In short, vaccines save lives and can reduce the risk of contagion from social interaction.

Art can disrupt what is embedded in our minds and open us up to new perspectives and insights. We hope to offer access to …

A Stillness In The Desert? Engaging The Public Through An Immersive Exploration Of Southwest Soundscapes, Julian Kilker, Thomas Bjelic Jan 2022

A Stillness In The Desert? Engaging The Public Through An Immersive Exploration Of Southwest Soundscapes, Julian Kilker, Thomas Bjelic

Creative Collaborations

The pandemic highlighted the anthropocentric nature of soundscapes, while the recent popularity of electric cars, quadcopters, and “noise cancellation” earbuds demonstrated how consumer products can rapidly change our awareness of sound. While light pollution is already extensively addressed in scholarly research, popular works such as The End of Night, and public engagement such as The International Dark Sky Association, the complex interplay of sound, natural resources, and public engagement is still emerging, particularly in creative fields.

Two UNLV scholars and artists are collaborating on this project: Julian Kilker, who specializes in visual and emerging technology research, and Tom Bjelic, who …

Governor Steve Bullock's "Great Equalizers": How The Narrative Paradigm Translates Progressive Initiatives To Conservative Audiences, Kelsie Lynn Severson

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

Montana Democratic Governor Steve Bullock won his re-election in 2016 despite a national conservative groundswell, in a state where Donald Trump also won by twenty points. Bullock would be labeled a very moderate Governor. However, he has accomplished several progressive steps forward for policy decisions in the state of Montana that include campaign finance reform, and Montana Medicaid expansion. This has led to national interest of Bullock’s success in campaigning and governing. While Bullock only just barely won both his gubernatorial bids, and has only accomplished some of his progressive goals, his rhetorical strategies that focus on narrative as a …
