Food Justice Youth Development: Using Photovoice To Study Urban School Food Systems, Krista Harper, Catherine Sands, Diego Angarita, Molly Totman, Monica Maitin, Jonell Sostre Rosado, Jazmin Colon, Nick Alger

Catherine Sands

How do youth learn through participation in efforts to study and change the school food system? Through our participatory youth action research (YPAR) project, we move beyond the "youth as consumer" frame to a food justice youth development approach. We track how a group of youth learned about food and the public policy process through their efforts to transform their own school food systems by conducting a participatory evaluation of farm-to-school efforts in collaboration with university and community partners. We used the Photovoice research method, placing cameras in the hands of young people so that they themselves could document and …

Review: 'Women In Catholic Higher Education: Border Work, Living Experiences, And Social Justice', Carolyn Ridenour Apr 2017

Review: 'Women In Catholic Higher Education: Border Work, Living Experiences, And Social Justice', Carolyn Ridenour

Carolyn S. Ridenour

Twelve writers challenge the structures and priorities of traditional Catholic colleges and universities: contemporary “reality TV” for anyone who values social justice in Catholic education. Throughout the book the writers confront the status quo of Catholic universities, questioning even those who have embraced feminist theology. The editors divided the book into three parts with subheadings that overstate their contents: “Feminist Border Work: Tensions and Contradictions” (3 chapters), “Living Experiences: Identity, Empowerment, and Action” (4 chapters), and “Social Justice: The Ideal, the Reality, and the Quest” (3 chapters). Like bookends, the editors have constructed two additional chapters: one at the beginning …

Three Legs On The Stool: Service Learning Projects, Community, And Library, Karen Schmidt, Deborah Halperin Dec 2015

Three Legs On The Stool: Service Learning Projects, Community, And Library, Karen Schmidt, Deborah Halperin

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Action Research Center launches many different service learning projects in the Bloomington-Normal community. Often these projects originate from the community, and employ the action research model that imbeds the participant-researcher in the organization or program that is being studied. The IWU library has seized on opportunities to integrate library research and critical thinking skills into service learning projects. Some are obvious - working with faculty and students in senior seminar classes to assist with research papers and presentations - while others are more subtle. Using a service learning project as a case study, the authors discuss the …

In the age of internationalization, global citizenship education has become an important concept, particularly in regards to worldwide curriculum reform. Different institutions around the world have been promoting the concept of global citizenship education by diversifying programs and curricula so as to prepare students with potent skills and knowledge for future challenges. International Service-Learning (ISL) is unique in itself in that it integrates community services and academic learning on a global platform. In recent years, many scholars have brought attention to ISL in higher education and provided insight on conducting research on this kind of learning experience. These scholars agree …

2013 Conference Brochure: Be A Part Of The Human Rights Movement's New Frontier, Joel R. Pruce, Maureen E. Schlangen

Joel Pruce

Why must we explore the social practice of human rights? In the 65 years since the U.N.’s Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the human rights community has become a standard-bearer of normative behavior, influencing development and humanitarian organizations, multinational corporations and philanthropists. Though the movement is viewed as honorable and admirable, the certainty of its mission can inhibit introspection; a natural tendency is to prioritize rather than challenge prevailing assumptions. Are the good intentions of human rights advocates enough? No. Research and dialogue can help propel the human rights community forward by facilitating introspection to improve both advocacy and action: …

Paying The Bills Is Not Just Theory: Service Learning About A Living Wage, Nina Banks, Geoffrey Schneider, Paul Susman

Geoffrey E Schneider

In addition, the article describes the authors' experiences with living wage projects that they have implemented. Spreading The Word: Service Learning In A Media Literacy Course, Carrie Buchanan, Margaret O. Finucane Ph.D.

Carrie Buchanan

Proliferating media and other digital tools have created a landscape that beckons children and adolescents as consumers and producers. It is imperative that young people develop knowledge and skills to effectively leverage those media for entertainment, learning, and critical analysis. This research focuses on an undergraduate media literacy course that teaches how children and adolescents absorb and interact with different types of
media. The course sent undergraduate students into the surrounding community to teach what they are learning on campus to children in elementary and middle-school programs, either in the classroom or after school. The authors used participant action research …
