Af-Embeddability Of 2-Graph Algebras And Quasidiagonality Of K-Graph Algebras, Lisa Orloff Clark, Astrid An Huef, Aidan Sims

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We characterise quasidiagonality of the C*-algebra of a cofinal k-graph in terms of an algebraic condition involving the coordinate matrices of the graph. This result covers all simple k-graph C*-algebras. In the special case of cofinal 2-graphs we further prove that AF-embeddability, quasidiagonality and stable finiteness of the 2-graph algebra are all equivalent.

A Residue Formula For The Fundamental Hochschild 3-Cocycle For Suq(2), Ulrich Krahmer, Adam Rennie, Roger Senior

Associate Professor Adam Rennie

An analogue of a spectral triple over SUq(2) is constructed for which the usual assumption of bounded commutators with the Dirac operator fails. An analytic expression analogous to that for the Hochschild class of the Chern character for spectral triples yields a non-trivial twisted Hochschild 3-cocycle. The problems arising from the unbounded commutators are overcome by defining a residue functional using projections to cut down the Hilbert space.

In-Arrears Interest Rate Derivatives Under The 3/2 Model, Joanna M. Goard Jan 2015

In-Arrears Interest Rate Derivatives Under The 3/2 Model, Joanna M. Goard

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Lie symmetry methods are used to find a closed form solution for in-arrears swaps under the 3/2 model ( ( ) ) ˆ 3 dr = r A t −α r dt + cr 2dZ . As well, approximate solutions are found for short-tenor inarrears caplets and floorlets under the same interest rate model. Comparisons are made of the approximate option values with those obtained with a computationally-intensive numerical scheme. The approximate pricing is found to be substantially fast easy to implement, while the relative errors with respect to the “true” prices are very small.

On Asymptotic Behaviour And W 2, P Regularity Of Potentials In Optimal Transportation, Jiakun Liu, Neil Trudinger, Xu-Jia Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2014, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. In this paper we study local properties of cost and potential functions in optimal transportation. We prove that in a proper normalization process, the cost function is uniformly smooth and converges locally smoothly to a quadratic cost x · y, while the potential function converges to a quadratic function. As applications we obtain the interior W2, p estimates and sharp C1, α estimates for the potentials, which satisfy a Monge–Ampère type equation. The W2, p estimate was previously proved by Caffarelli for the quadratic transport cost and the associated standard Monge–Ampère equation.

Terahertz Spectroscopy Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene Over A Wide Temperature Range (7−245 K), Lucia Lepodise, Josip Horvat, R A. Lewis Jan 2015

Terahertz Spectroscopy Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene Over A Wide Temperature Range (7−245 K), Lucia Lepodise, Josip Horvat, R A. Lewis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Previous THz spectroscopy of the TNT explosive precursor, 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), has been restricted to room temperature (apart from one set of data at 11 K). Here, for the first time, we investigate the spectrum as the temperature is systematically varied, from 7 to 245 K. Many new features appear in the spectrum on cooling below room temperature. As well as the five absorption lines observed previously, we observe five additional lines. In addition, a new room-temperature line at 8.52 THz (281 cm−1) is observed. Six of the lines red-shift with temperature and four of them blue-shift. The blue shift is …

Boundary C^{2,\Alpha} Estimates For Monge-Ampere Type Equations, Yong Huang, Feida Jiang, Jiakun Liu Jan 2015

Boundary C^{2,\Alpha} Estimates For Monge-Ampere Type Equations, Yong Huang, Feida Jiang, Jiakun Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we obtain global second derivative estimates for solutions of the Dirichlet problem of certain Monge-Ampère type equations under some structural conditions, while the inhomogeneous term is only assumed to be Hölder continuous and bounded away from zero and infinity. These estimates correspond to those for the standard Monge-Ampère equation obtained by Trudinger and Wang (2008) and by Savin (2013), and have natural applications in optimal transportation and prescribed Jacobian equations.

Sodium-ion batteries can be the best alternative to lithium-ion batteries, because of their similar electrochemistry, nontoxicity, and elemental abundance and the low cost of sodium. They still stand in need of better cathodes in terms of their structural and electrochemical aspects.

Alternative Al Production Methods: Part 2 - Thermodynamic Analyses Of Indirect Carbothermal Routes, M A. Dewan, M A. Rhamdhani, G A. Brooks, B J. Monaghan, L Prentice

Brian Monaghan

It has been widely claimed that direct and indirect carbothermic reduction of alumina for the production of aluminium have the potential to consume less energy, generate fewer perfluorocarbons and have lower total greenhouse gas emissions compared to the Hall-He´ roult process. A review of alternative aluminium production techniques focusing on the indirect carbothermal reduction routes has been presented in the Part 1 paper. In this Part 2 paper, systematic thermodynamic analyses of indirect carbothermal reduction routes are presented. These include the analyses of the Stage 1 of the process where alumina is converted to intermediate aluminium compounds before they are …

Hep-2 Cell Image Classification With Multiple Linear Descriptors, Lingqiao Liu, Lei Wang Jan 2014

Hep-2 Cell Image Classification With Multiple Linear Descriptors, Lingqiao Liu, Lei Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The automatic classification of the HEp-2 cell stain patterns from indirect immunofluorescence images has attracted much attention recently. As an image classification problem, it can be well solved by the state-of-the-art bag-of-features (BoF) model as long as a suitable local descriptor is known. Unfortunately, for this special task, we have very limited knowledge of such a descriptor. In this paper, we explore the possibility of automatically learning the descriptor from the image data itself. Specifically, we assume that a local patch can be well described by a set of linear projections performed on its pixel values. Based on this assumption, …

Spectral Flow Invariants And Twisted Cyclic Theory For The Haar State On Suq(2), A L. Carey, A Rennie, K Tong

Associate Professor Adam Rennie

In [A.L. Carey, J. Phillips, A. Rennie, Twisted cyclic theory and an index theory for the gauge invariant KMS state on Cuntz algebras. arXiv:0801.4605], we presented a K-theoretic approach to finding invariants of algebras with no non-trivial traces. This paper presents a new example that is more typical of the generic situation. This is the case of an algebra that admits only non-faithful traces, namely SUq.2/ and also KMS states. Our main results are index theorems (which calculate spectral flow), one using ordinary cyclic cohomology and the other using twisted cyclic cohomology, where the twisting comes from the generator of …

Rietveld Analysis Of The Effect Of Annealing Atmosphere On Phase Evolution Of Nanocrystalline Tio 2 Powders, M Salari, M Rezaee, A T. Chidembo, Konstantin Konstantinov, Hua-Kun Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The struclUral evolution of nanocrystaUine Ti02 was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the Rietveld refinement method (RRM). Ti02 powders were prepared by the sol-gel technique. Post annealing of as·synthesized powders in the temperature range from 500°C to 600 °C under air and argon atmospheres led to the formation of Ti02 nanoparticles with mean crystallite size in the range of 37-165 nm. based on the Rietveld refinement results. It was found that the phase structure, composition, and crystallite size of the resulting particles were dependent on not only the annealing temperature, but also the annealing atmosphere. Rietveld refinement of the …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The aim of this study was to develop a highperformance simplified readout electronic for a compact gamma camera to achieve a maximized performance in its intrinsic spatial resolution. This compact camera is based on a pixellated NaI(Tl) crystal with 1.2 mm×1.2 mm×5 mm pixel element and 1.4 mm pixel pitch coupled to a 2×2 Hamamatsu H8500 multi-anode position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSPMT) array. The design of the simplified readout is based on novel two-stage charge divisions with Truncated Center-of-Gravity (TCOG) positioning method to maximize the detector performance. The performance of the compact camera with the novel simplified readout was evaluated …

A Dual Graph Construction For Higher-Rank Graphs, And K-Theory For Finite 2-Graphs, Stephen Allen, David Pask, Aidan Sims

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Given a k-graph Λ and an element p of Nk, we define the dual k-graph, pΛ. We show that when Λ is row-finite and has no sources, the C*-algebras C*(Λ) and C*(pΛ) coincide. We use this isomorphism to apply Robertson and Steger's results to calculate the K-theory of C*(Λ) when Λ is finite and strongly connected and satisfies the aperiodicity condition.
