Investigation Of Closure Of Internal Cracks During Rolling By Fe Model Considering Crack Surface Roughness, Hailiang Yu, A Kiet Tieu, Cheng Lu, Ajit R. Godbole

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Internal cracks often appear in cast slabs, and their evolution during hot deformation directly affects the product quality. In this paper, the authors investigate the closure behavior of internal cracks during plate rolling using a finite element (FE) model that takes into account the roughness of the crack surface. Influences of the roughness and reduction ratio on the closure of cracks are analyzed. The simulated results show that the models with consideration of the initial crack roughness can be used to investigate the formation of residual voids around the crack after rolling. The simulation results are validated by experimental observations. …

Deformation Characterization Of Micro Rolling For Stainless Steel Foil, Haibo Xie, Kenichi Manabe, Tsuyoshi Furushima, Kazuo Tada, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Physical parameters such as microscopic roughness become very important in micro forming process due to increasing surface to volume ratio. As a very important phenomenon in metal forming process, friction size effects are becoming more attracting for researchers because traditional models are not reliable. In this study, the micro rolling deformation characterization has been investigated with SUS 304 stainless steel considering the effect of lubricant, and there exists a sticking area in the contact zone. The evolution of surface roughness and oil film thickness are analyzed. The foil thickness plays an important role in the tribological features of rolling. All …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A novel microforming process - Micro Cross Wedge Rolling has been proposed, which is very promising in producing micro stepped components. It is inevitable to confront with huge challenges in the development of micro cross wedge rolling technology. The influences of miniaturization, especially size effect, on process, accuracy control and product quality have to be studied. A micro cross wedge rolling testing rig has been designed and manufactured. Micro stepped components have been fabricated successfully by adopting flat wedge tools on this rig. The effects of surface roughness of tool, grain size in workpiece and cross sectional area reduction on …

Advanced Rolling Technologies For Producing Ultra-Finegrain/Nanostructured Alloys, Hailiang Yu, A Kiet Tieu, Cheng Lu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Ultrafine-grained materials show high strength at ambient temperature, high-speed superplastic deformation at elevated temperatures, and high corrosion resistance. Such materials have attracted increasing attention in the past twenty years. A number of severe plastic deformation techniques, such as equal-channel angular press, high pressure torsion, groove pressing, twist extrusion, asymmetric rolling, and accumulative roll bonding have been used to develop ultrafine-grained bulk materials. The equal-channel angular press, high pressure torsion, twist extrusion and groove pressing techniques suffer from some drawbacks: firstly, forming machines with large load capacities and expensive dies are indispensable for these processes; secondly, the productivity is relatively very …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A newly developed manufacturing technology - micro cross wedge rolling technology is an appropriate method to produce micro axisymmetric components such as micro stepped shafts. The development of this classic cold forming process is limited by a lack of sufficient understanding of geometric and material effects due to the size reduction of the components. In this study, a numerical model is proposed to simulate micro cross wedge rolling where the grain size effect is taken into account. Pure copper is chosen as the raw material. A finite element simulation is implemented where the diameter of the cylindrical workpiece is 0.8 …

Analysis Of Internal Crack Healing Mechanism Under Rolling Deformation, Haitao Gao, Zhengrong Ai, Hailiang Yu, Hongyan Wu, Xianghua Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A new experimental method, called the 'hole filling method', is proposed to simulate the healing of internal cracks in rolled workpieces. Based on the experimental results, the evolution in the microstructure, in terms of diffusion, nucleation and recrystallisation were used to analyze the crack healing mechanism. We also validated the phenomenon of segmented healing. Internal crack healing involves plastic deformation, heat transfer and an increase in the free energy introduced by the cracks. It is proposed that internal cracks heal better under high plastic deformation followed by slow cooling after rolling. Crack healing is controlled by diffusion of atoms from …

An Investigation Of Interface Bonding Of Bimetallic Foils By Combined Accumulative Roll Bonding And Asymmetric Rolling Techniques, Hailiang Yu, A Kiet Tieu, Cheng Lu, Ajit R. Godbole

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The bond strength in bimetallic materials is an important material characteristic. In this study, 0.1-mm thick bimetallic foils (AA1050/AA6061) were produced using one pass of accumulative roll bonding followed by three passes of asymmetric rolling (AR). The AR passes were carried out at roll speed ratios of 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 separately. Finite element simulation was used to model the deformation of the bimetallic foils for the various experimental conditions. Particular attention was focused on the bonding of the interface between AA1050 and AA6061 layers in the simulation. The optimization of the roll speed ratio was obtained for …

3d Fem Analysis Of Strip Shape During Multi-Pass Rolling In A 6-High Cvc Cold Rolling Mill, Kezhi Linghu, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Fei Li, Dongbin Wei, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Xianming Zhao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A 3D elastic–plastic finite element method (FEM) model of cold strip rolling for 6-high continuous variable crown (CVC) control rolling mill was developed. This model considers the boundary conditions such as accurate CVC curves, total rolling forces, total bending forces and roll shifting values. The rolling force distributions were obtained by the internal iteration processes instead of being treated as model boundary conditions. The calculated error has been significantly reduced by the developed model. Based on the rolling schedule data from a 1,850-mm CVC cold rolling mill, the absolute error between the simulated results and the actual values is obtained …
