Inspired by discussions at the 2017 Library Publishing Forum, An Ethical Framework for Library Publishing 1.0 was created by the members of the Ethical Framework for Library Publishing Task Force, with the assistance of many community members who served as peer reviewers and workshop participants, as well as the staff of the Educopia Institute. The Framework introduces library publishers to important ethical considerations in a variety of areas and provides concrete recommendations and resources for ethical scholarly publishing. As the version number in the title suggests, the document is meant to evolve - to be updated and expanded over time. …

The Write Way: Past "Aall Call For Papers" Winners Advise The Hesitant Writer, Adeen Postar
Adeen Postar
Each year, the American Association of Law Libraries sponsors a writing competition, funded by LEXIS Publishing. Officially known as the “Call for Papers,” the competition sparks scholarship, fosters creativity, and recognizes some of the finest writing produced by the members of our profession. Winning papers are presented at the Annual Meeting and often are published in Law Library Journal. Over time, the scholarship has added to and shaped the Association’s collective wisdom.
To get a handle on how to write a winning paper, this year’s judges queried four past winners: Deanna Barmakian, Jonathan Franklin, Michael A. Slinger, and Beatrice Tice. …

In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common and used venue for publication by STEM faculty and researchers. Subject librarians at one of the largest public research institutions in the United States are tailoring workshops geared towards faculty to create awareness of predatory publishing. Our research question involved identifying STEM faculty at our institution who have published in questionable journals and bringing this to their attention through a series of faculty workshops.
This poster was presented at the American Library Association Annual Conference meeting for the Association of College and Research Libraries- Science Technology Section …

Over the last decade proposal success rates in the fundamental sciences have dropped significantly. Astronomy and related fields funded by NASA and NSF are no exception. Data across agencies show that this is not principally the result of a decline in proposal merit (the proportion of proposals receiving high rankings is largely unchanged), nor of a shift in proposer demographics (seniority, gender, and institutional affiliation have all remained unchanged), nor of an increase (beyond inflation) in the average requested funding per proposal, nor of an increase in the number of proposals per investigator in any one year. Rather, the statistics …

In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository, primarily staffed by a librarian located in Oregon and a library assistant located in Montana with occasional help from other Library Services staff. Workflow and communication standards had to be created that would allow library staff in multiple locations and time zones to seamlessly launch, populate, and manage the institutional repository. Outreach, instruction, and promotion tactics had to also be created to reach researchers and clinical staff across six states and 100+ locations.

Background: While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.

Sharing data is now encouraged by major funding agencies, and many journals require it as a prerequisite for publication. While many of the hard science journals have implemented ‘Data Deposit Requirements’ and ‘Policies’, in the Library Science literature, publishers are beginning to move titles into open access journals, but data deposit requirements are just beginning to be addressed. Librarian authors will increasingly find themselves having to comply with data sharing policies. In this webinar, we look at examples from the Journal of the Medical Library Association and the Journal of eScience Librarianship and discuss best practices in data deposit.

The University Archives Department at Indiana State University (ISU) assists faculty, students, and the public by providing access to and preservation of primary resources and ISU history. Despite the resources and services available, archival holdings are often underused and receive few donations from students and student organizations. These students are often unaware of the function and uses of the archives. To address these concerns, Special Collections staff have created a website utilizing the Omeka platform called STATE-IT to engage students with the University Archives. This site houses digital archival materials, digital exhibits, and oral histories. STATE-IT also provides a quick …

In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common and used venue for publication by faculty, researchers, and students. However, open access publishing also prompts issues and concerns related to the publishing model and predatory publishing practices. In this session, Sandy Avila, Science Librarian, Ven Basco, Engineering Librarian, and Sarah Norris, Scholarly Communication Librarian will share information about open access, predatory publishing, and how to differentiate between credible and predatory journals, with an emphasis on STEM-focused publications. Areas to be explored will include how to identify spam email, fake metrics, predatory conferences, and other issues associated …

Developing New Streams Of Undergraduate Submissions, Debra J. Rodensky, Kadie J. Mullins, Wesley Lewis
Kadie Hayward Mullins
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) has been successful in attracting faculty participation in Scholarly Commons, its institutional repository. Other than dissertations and theses, however, student submissions have been slow in coming, despite university priorities to support and disseminate undergraduate research. In early 2017, the scholarly communications staff at Hunt Library set out to change that picture. Energized by a Digital Commons webinar exploring approaches to highlighting undergraduate opportunities, they approached campus colleagues with a new venture – capturing the research experiences of students going abroad during the summer of 2017. The idea was enthusiastically embraced and within a short time, a …
