Purpose – In an educational world with increasing internationalization, digitization, assessment and financial justification, US institutions, especially academic libraries, must justify each new project. Institutional Repositories (IRs) are no exception. The authors attempt to identify factors that might affect the international usage of US IRs as part of assessment efforts to determine an IR's return-on-investment. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was disseminated to IR administrators asking for demographic information, international usage counts for website hits and downloads, and any internationalization efforts connected to the IR in order to determine any influencing factors on an IR's international usage. This presentation will discuss ongoing developments in a collaboration between the Purdue University Libraries and the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP). We will present a case study where a comprehensive work flow was developed that links technical report publication to cited data sets. The Libraries, JTRP, and researchers have leveraged this new model to increase research impact, reduce research redundancy, and incorporate data management into the research life cycle.

Student Embargoes Within Institutional Repositories: Faculty Early Transparency Concerns, David Stern

Within the academic sphere there are legitimate reasons why some faculty-student collaboration efforts should not be documented and released ASAP as open access materials placed in institutional repositories. The need for the protection of ideas and processes prior to faculty publication can be in direct conflict with the intention for institutional repositories to promote the excellent efforts of students. This is certainly true in laboratory situations in which details of experiments and research areas are guarded for the lifetime of the exploration process. The implications of this situation can range from the removal of students from sensitive collaborations (unless there …
