A third year scholarly communication librarian will discuss a reckoning with his professional mission in closing the gap between the work done on the campus and the interests of the community around it. This topic is inspired in large part by Kathleen Fitzpatrick's groundbreaking book, Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University (2019), which argues Universities should reorient themselves toward the public good through more direct engagement with that public and more constructive collaboration within the academy itself. In 2017, a joint international effort commenced under the direction of the President of University for Business and Technology (UBT) in Kosovo with colleagues from Linnaeus University (Sweden) and University for the Pacific (USA) to define, create and populate a Knowledge Center for UBT which would include an institutional repository (IR). Enlivened by discussion and feedback from the intended recipients, the needs and goals of a UBT IR were identified. Hip-Hop music, business, distribution, and culture exhibit highly-comparable trends in the scholarly communication and publication industry. This article discusses Hip-Hop artists and research authors as content creators, each operating within marketplaces still adjusting to digital, online connectivity. These discussions are intended for classroom use, where students may access their existing knowledge framework of popular media and apply it to a new understanding of the scholarly communication environment. Research instructors and librarians may discover new perspectives to familiar issues through conversations with students engaging with this material in a novel way.
