Oduvek (Since The Beginning): Roma Narratives Of Continuous Discrimination And Perspectives On Identity, Marginalization, And Assimilation In Niš, Serbia, Erin Humphries

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Previous research into Roma memory studies and narratives has found a strong focus on the present and a tendency to ‘obliterate’ the past. This paper explores Roma perceptions of discrimination in Niš, Serbia and its continuity throughout history. Findings suggest that although a majority of participants did recognize a continuity of discrimination, agreeing that Roma had always been discriminated against, when asked about specific time periods in Serbia, such as Yugoslavia and the 1990’s, most interviewees acknowledged these as time periods of equality. The present situation is also discussed in relation to the state of discrimination, the role of the …

Pragmatism And Inescapable Truth: Young Mongolians’ Perceptions Of Chinese, Caroline Olsen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper is an attempt to discover and seek answers about Mongolians’ perceptions and feelings toward the Chinese, in particular young, university-aged Mongolians. I set out to discover what young Mongolians say about Chinese, why those attitudes came about to begin with, and if they believe that, through more numerous interactions with China, these attitudes will change.

To uncover answers, I studied previous literature that existed on Mongolians’ general perceptions of Chinese, interviewed 17 students at three universities in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, released surveys to 36 university students, and interviewed professionals with various backgrounds to get finer details about the history …

Western Influence, Latent Racism, And Their Impact On Access To Health Care In Madagascar, Jessica Joy Jul 2011

Western Influence, Latent Racism, And Their Impact On Access To Health Care In Madagascar, Jessica Joy

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

While the Malagasy commemorate their Independence Day on June 26 as the day they were freed from colonization and allowed to function as their own country with their own cultures and practices, colonization and Western influence has left an indelible mark on Madagascar that continues to exert its power to this day, shaping Malagasy social behaviors, values, and lives. The introduction of the slave trade to Madagascar in the mid-1800s, as well as French colonization, has left behind a thriving latent and structural racism in the country; a Western ideal of beauty, made complete by its valorization of fair skin, …

The Influence Of Local Government And Bid Initiatives On Cuca Che Guevara As A Center For Social Inclusion, Tessa Baizer

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Fortaleza, Brazil, is a city known for its extreme levels of social inequality in between the center of the city and the periphery. Over time, these have led to high rates of social problems among youth living on the outer reaches of the city, including truancy and lack of employability. These problems have led many of the youth in the city to become excluded from general society, and more likely to engage in risky behaviors, including crime and early pregnancy. After abandoning these areas for many years, the local government decided to create a physical center to promote the employability …

The Identity Of The Chinese In Belgrade: A National Question, Wan (Sabrina) Tsai Apr 2011

The Identity Of The Chinese In Belgrade: A National Question, Wan (Sabrina) Tsai

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Chinese community is an unknown population to the general Serbian society. Since most of the Chinese function within their own established spaces, it is difficult for outsiders to fully understand the dynamics of Chinese identity. This study aims to explore the layers of identity formation in the Chinese transmigrant community in Belgrade, Serbia. By taken into account different daily-life factors that impact identity formation, this study examines the extent to which Chinese identities are influenced by living and working in Serbia.

The methods used in this study are four semi-structured interviews and thirty-two informal conversations with the Chinese in …

The Language Of Action: A Creative Study Of Resistance To Slavery From West Africa To The Days Across The Sea, Kali Block-Steele

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The goal of this paper is to study one of the lesser known aspects of the Transatlantic Slave Trade: resistance. Before the discussion of resistance, a brief history of the trade can be found. The focus on active resistance to slavery both on an individual and collective level begins on the African continent and continues through the Middle Passage, finishing with a discussion on forms of resistance in the Americas. There is a second part encompassing some creative writings inspired by the formation of this paper.
