Conscientiousness, Extraversion, College Education, And Longevity Of High-Ability Individuals, Peter A. Savelyev

Arts & Sciences Articles

Using the 1922–1991 Terman Life-Cycle Study of Children with High Ability, I investigate the relationship between childhood noncognitive skills, college education, and longevity of a high-IQ population and find a strong relationship between college education and longevity for men. Conscientiousness and Extraversion are strongly related to longevity of men, even though their effects on education are, at best, weak. I demonstrate a number of behavioral mechanisms behind the estimated effects on longevity. I also find that men with higher levels of education and skills have superior health over the lifespan. For women of this historical cohort (born around 1910), who …

Developmental Strategies And Styles And Their Measurement, Wenyu Bai

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Developmental styles and strategies (DSS) are preferences and repeated patterns in intentional self-development. A taxonomy of DSS based on the convergence of talent development and Sternberg's Triarchic Model of Intelligences was proposed to distinguish school learners, street learners, talent developers (specialists), and all-knowers (generalists). This study explored the reliability of the researcher-developed Educational Developmental Style and Strategy Scale, the relationships of age, gender, birth order, ethnicity, and SES to developmental DSS adoption, and the characteristics of five types of DSS adopters (i.e., street learning specialists, street learning generalists, school learning specialists, school learning generalists, the neutral group). Eighty out of …

The Utility Of A Computerized Assessment Battery To Evaluate Cognitive Functioning And Attention, Carl Richard Ellis

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In recent years much attention has been given to the application of computer technology to psychometric methods, but researchers have concentrated on adapting traditional methods of psychological testing to the new technology instead of utilizing it to develop innovative methods of assessment. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a computerized assessment battery designed to evaluate cognitive functioning and attention could demonstrate reliability and validity. The Computerized Cognitive Assessment Battery (CCAB) was developed according to the PASS Model of Cognitive Functioning and administered via a Macintosh computer and test results included response style variables (mouse movement and response …

The Development Of A Computer Assisted Assessment Device For Use In Screening Children Referred For Psychoeducational Evaluations, Michael J. Buxton

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Recent advances in microcomputers allowed for the development of a Computer Assisted Assessment (CAA) device which provided a higher degree of feedback and interaction for subjects than had previously been possible. This enhanced human/machine interactive capability was found to increase the comparability between a CAA device and a traditional test instrument. A counter-balanced, pre-post test comparison between the manual and CAA Raven Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) indicated no difference between test mediums, with the exception of the CAA pre-test requiring significantly longer for students to complete than the manual pre-test version. A reliability study of the CAA RSPM indicated this …
