How Data Curation Enables Epistemically Responsible Reuse Of Qualitative Data, Sebastian Karcher, Dessislava (Dessi) Kirilova, Christiane Pagé, Nic Weber

The Qualitative Report

Data sharing and reuse are becoming the norm in quantitative research. At the same time, significant skepticism still accompanies the sharing and reuse of qualitative research data on both ethical and epistemological grounds. Nevertheless, there is growing interest in the reuse of qualitative data, as demonstrated by the range of contributions in this special issue. In this research note, we address epistemological critiques of reusing qualitative data and argue that careful curation of data can enable what we term “epistemologically responsible reuse” of qualitative data. We begin by briefly defining qualitative data and summarizing common epistemological objections to their shareability …

Analytical Coding: Performing Qualitative Data Analysis Based On Programming Principles, Gennady Kanygin, Viktoria Koretckaia

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, we argue that qualitative data analysis software lacks a tool that can be used to fulfill an algorithmic evaluation of conceptualization carried out in qualitative studies. We propose the context-oriented models of coding that conjugate single codes, that is, brief denotations made in natural language, by unusual local relationships called context-fixed elucidation (CFE). CFE is a local relationship between miscellaneous aspects of a case under study. The set of separate CFEs, originated by the analyst during conceptualization and called thesaurus, represents the case as a whole. On the basis of CFE structure and using the thesaurus’ single …

Qualitative Research In The Politically Hostile Environment Of Zimbabwe: A Practical Guide, Gabriel Musasa Jan 2021

Qualitative Research In The Politically Hostile Environment Of Zimbabwe: A Practical Guide, Gabriel Musasa

The Qualitative Report

Globally, qualitative researchers in the academic or non-academic fields are constantly faced with the complexity of fieldwork in conducting their research in a specific environment. Despite the understanding that researchers have of the techniques to use in their research approach, a gap remains on obtaining data in different, unique contexts of society: the cultural, economic and political. The purpose of this paper is to provide a practical guide for researchers who intend to conduct qualitative research in the politically hostile environment of Zimbabwe based on the experiences of the author during the fieldwork for a PhD study. The main focus …
