The Nebraska Business Development Center partnered with the Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to advance knowledge on entrepreneurship in the State of Nebraska. This study identifies the context, setting, players and behaviors of the entrepreneurship ecosystem. It also provides evidence of the challenges they experience and develops a series of “calls to action” to increase the pace of entrepreneurship development in Nebraska.

What are racial and ethnic disparities (RED)? RED refers to racial and ethnic differences in contacts and experiences with the criminal and juvenile justice systems.1,2 Measuring the extent to which RED exist in the justice system is a first step toward identifying the ways to improve upon how well the system upholds the principle of equal treatment under the law.3 Prior research shows that RED are prevalent across multiple points of contact with the juvenile justice system in Nebraska.1,3 There is also a large body of evidence demonstrating RED in the adult criminal justice system nationwide.4 The purpose of this …

The Omaha-Council Bluffs metro is among the top 10 metros when it comes to affording a home according to an analysis of median home value compared to median household income for owner-occupied housing units conducted by the Center for Public Affairs Research.
The estimated median home value for owner-occupied units in 2017 for the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro was $170,200. The median household income for households in owner-occupied units was $83,144. This results in a ratio of 2.05. This means, on average, a home in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro costs about two times a household income. A ratio around 2.0 or …

This paper re-examines and updates a controversial historical economic analysis, presented almost 45 years ago by Robert William Fogel1 and Stanley L. Engerman in their “Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery (1974).” The authors purported their work has two main objectives: 1) to revise an erroneous, “traditional” characterization of the slave economy and myths about black slaves themselves and 2) to apply rapid advances in economics, quantitative statistics, applied mathematics and the availability of high-speed computers to analyze large data sets, to re-examine and better understand the institution of slavery.

The Census Bureau estimates the July 1, 2016 population of Nebraska to be 1,907,116. The state hit a new population milestone, exceeding the 1.9 million mark for the first time. Seven years passed between exceeding 1.8 million for the first time in 2009 and this new milestone in 2016. This 7-year timespan ties for the shortest such duration to gain 100,000 persons with the 7-year period from 1992 to 1999, when the state rose from 1.6 million to 1.7 million residents. While trends in births by age of mother tend to get more attention, trends in the number and rate of births by race and ethnicity are also important. This summary describes such trends over time. Birth-related data by race and ethnicity using current standard definitions go back to 1989. Over the past several decades in Nebraska, where and how people live has changed dramatically. In 1900, 67% of Nebraskans lived in nonmetropolitan counties. Today, 65% live in metropolitan counties. The transformation in where people live in Nebraska reveals changes in how people live as well. For instance, in this infographic you can see that metropolitan Nebraska is younger, more diverse and more educated. However, while there are differences between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan Nebraska there are some attributes of life in Nebraska that transcend county boarders.
