Déjà Vu: Famine And Crisis In Somalia, Mary H. Schwoebel Sep 2011

Déjà Vu: Famine And Crisis In Somalia, Mary H. Schwoebel

Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Articles

Somalia is currently experiencing the worst drought and famine in over half a century. Half of the population (close to four million people) is dependent on food aid, while tens of thousands are estimated to have died since the drought began this past summer. In early September, the United Nations warned that as many as 750,000 people could die in the coming months if aid efforts are not ramped up. At least 150,000 have fled their homes seeking assistance in internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps located in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, and in refugee camps located in neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia. …

The Cross-Border Dialogue Initiative, Mary H. Schwoebel Jan 2011

The Cross-Border Dialogue Initiative, Mary H. Schwoebel

Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Articles

The Cross-Border Dialogue Initiative empowers border communities to solve their own problems non-violently and to advocate for their own needs and aspirations non-violently with their own governments and with international actors.

The Pashtun tribal communities along the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan are among the most-conflict affected in the world today. The populations of these regions were on the frontlines of the Cold War and they are on the frontlines of the global war on terror today. In addition, they are afflicted by long-standing tribal conflicts that are both aggravated by and contribute to national, regional, and global conflicts, as …

Flooding Challenges Pakistan’S Government And The International Community, Altaf Ullah Khan, Mary H. Schwoebel Aug 2010

Flooding Challenges Pakistan’S Government And The International Community, Altaf Ullah Khan, Mary H. Schwoebel

Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Articles

The flooding and associated devastation that have battered Pakistan since late July 2010 present yet another series of challenges to its government, already contending with violence from extremist groups. The international community would do well to assist the Pakistani government in responding effectively to these challenges.

Natural disasters are social as well as environmental events. The poor and marginalized members of society suffer the most. Marginalization is one of the root causes of violence and militancy in Pakistan.

As the government of Pakistan responds to the suffering of its people and the damage to the environment and infrastructure, it should …

Restorative Writing: Connecting Adjudicated Students To Local And Global Communities, Cheryl Lynn Duckworth Jul 2010

Restorative Writing: Connecting Adjudicated Students To Local And Global Communities, Cheryl Lynn Duckworth

CAHSS Faculty Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

Poets and memoirists have known for millennia that the written word can clarify, beautify and heal, as the students of Room 5C often discover. Writing, of course, is also a key tool of peaceful social change. As such, the written word can be where personal and social change, structure and agency, meet in the classroom. Yet how often is this power leveraged in our juvenile detention home schools? How often do we ask juvenile offenders to be critical participants, even leaders, in their communities? Freire would remind us that the problems juvenile offender-students face are themselves the best curriculum.

This …

United States Institute Of Peace Teaches International Security Personnel To Resolve Conflicts Without Resorting To The Use Of Force, Mary H. Schwoebel

Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Articles

Over the past decade, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) has trained members of police and military forces around the world to prepare them to participate in international peacekeeping operations or to contribute to post-conflict stabilization and rule of law interventions in their own or in other war-torn countries. Most of the training takes place outside the United States, from remote, rugged bases to centrally located schools and academies, from Senegal to Nepal, from Italy to the Philippines. Training Programs for International Security Personnel Today's crisis, conflict, and post-conflict contexts are characterized by complexity, multiple parties, blurred boundaries, blurred …

Interest-Based Negotiation: Increasing Satisfaction Levels Among Critical Stakeholders, Neil H. Katz

CAHSS Faculty Articles

In an environment of competing demands for limited resources from critical stakeholders, government finance officers need to pay attention to not only what they negotiate, but also how they negotiate. This article presents some basic elements of an Interest-based Negotiation Approach to increase stakeholder satisfaction levels in terms of the agreement, the relationship among the parties, and the process itself.

Impact Evaluation Of The WarTorn Societies Project: Somaliland, Mary H. Schwoebel

Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Articles

In 1991, four months after the collapse of the government of the Somali Democratic Republic, and the flight of its President, Mohamed Siyad Barre, the Republic of Somaliland was declared an independent state. The past decade has witnessed the struggle of the young state to resolve violent internal conflicts, to build sustainable peace among the different groups that constitute its population, to build a state that will sustain peace, and to rebuild an economy that will sustain the population. At the turn of the century, it has remarkably make significant progress towards accomplishing the first two aims, and is now …

Unsung Heroines: Women And Natural Disasters, Mary Schwoebel Jan 2000

Unsung Heroines: Women And Natural Disasters, Mary Schwoebel

Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Articles

Although women play crucial parts in disaster preparedness, mitigation, and recovery, their roles in disasters are often overlooked or ignored. However, history shows that when disasters strike, women sometimes form spontaneous associations to assist relief and recovery efforts. At other times, women's organizations direct their resources for disaster relief and recovery. Women's organizations also partner with international disaster assistance agencies to expedite relief efforts. Are women more vulnerable to disasters? What are women's capabilities for responding to disasters? What can international organizations do to integrate women more effectively into disaster planning and recovery? Vulnerabilities and Risks The circumstances of women's …
