Housing unaffordability has become a crisis in Ontario as many residents struggle to find affordable housing across the province. The objective of this research is to uncover how service managers in Ontario are planning to address this growing unaffordability by developing new affordable housing. The following research question guides the methodology of this paper: What measures are being employed by Ontario service managers to facilitate the development of new affordable housing? Housing First In Canada: A New Approach To Homelessness And Best Practices For Municipal Implementation, Shelly Steffler

This paper assesses the Housing First approach to homelessness, which provides people living on the street with permanent homes before offering them optional support, as opposed to the traditional approach to housing, where people need to meet certain conditions, such as sobriety, before being assisted to obtain housing. It uses case studies from Medicine Hat, Alberta and Toronto to explore the implementation of Housing First in two Canadian cities. This paper discusses the lessons China could learn from Canada with respect to affordable housing. It uses specific case studies that focus on the experiences of Shanghai and Toronto respectively, with the necessary information regarding the policies of both cities being sourced from existing research papers, government documents, and government websites. The findings reveal that the affordable housing system in China is lacking the enlargement of public participation, the reinforcement of community engagement, and the expansion of public-private partnerships, suggesting that these three areas can be improved with reference to the affordable housing experience in Toronto, where these factors are …

This paper examines whether community-based organizations (CBOs) offer a viable strategy for addressing social and community development issues within mixed-income housing in Toronto. It analyzes how and under what conditions mixed income housing developments produce a vibrant base of CBOs that reflect the social diversity of residents and it explores the extent to which mixed income developments build a sense of community with reference to the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood. Affordable Housing Within A Post-Welfare State: The Case Of Toronto, Dave Guyadeen

This paper examines the firsthand effects of the federal government’s Affordable Housing Initiative on the City of Toronto. A series of in-depth interviews were conducted with key housing stakeholders within the housing sector, including representatives of the City of Toronto and Toronto Community Housing, as well as affordable housing advocates. The findings reveal that despite the introduction of the Affordable Housing Initiative, Toronto’s affordable housing system has experienced an increased reliance on the private sector and the perpetuation of temporary solutions that fail to address the affordable housing crisis in the city.
