An MTAS Technical Bulletin dated April 5, 1978, reported an opinion from the Office of the State Attorney General relative to voting in municipal elections by nonresident property owners. This opinion was negated by Chapter 944, Public Acts of 1978, which provided that nonresidents could vote in municipalities where they owned property.

This Technical Bulletin discusses the issue of whether property ownership in a municipality makes a person eligible to vote in municipal elections where he or she owns property but does not reside. The Office of the State Attorney General rendered the opinion that "the mere ownership of property in a municipality does not give the owner(s) of the property a right to vote in the municipal elections.
