Sternberg’S Transformational And Transactional Giftedness: A Dabrowskian Interpretation, Salvatore Mendaglio

SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness

Sternberg’s (2020) transformational and transactional giftedness are based on a theory of leadership. Transformational leaders are highly moral, make changes that benefit members and society. They are concerned with members’ well-being and development. Transactional leaders are motivated by self-interest, concerned with members’ compliance with expectations and standards. Qualities of these forms are applied to giftedness, yielding transformational and transactional giftedness. Sternberg’s presentation and a review of leadership literature were examined from the perspective of Dabrowski’s theory of positive disintegration. It is concluded that they resonate well with Dabrowski’s theory. The current article suggests that Sternberg’s transactional and transformational giftedness resemble …

Basic psychological needs, socioeconomic status and involvement in honors programs may impact well-being of undergraduate students. This exploratory study examines these factors and uses Self-Determination Theory as a lens to interpret the effect on well-being of undergraduate honors and non-honors students. Self-Determination Theory is a macro theory of motivation and personality development that relates to individuals’ need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, and addresses the social-emotional and cognitive components needed to ensure individuals’ well-being. In this study, researchers examined the relationship among basic psychological needs, socioeconomic status, honors participation, and well-being of 252 undergraduates. Results of a …

The present review examines research with gifted LGBTQ individuals. This article will focus on the first research with gifted LGBTQ individuals before leaping forward in time to several recent studies, each of which has significantly contributed to a field lacking in empirical research. Overall themes will then be discussed. I suggest that research in this area has notably advanced, in parallel with shifts in legislation, culture and attitudes toward LGBTQ people. Increased focus on aspects of diversity in gifted learners and gifted education have also contributed to this expanding field of research. SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness

Studies conducted in French Canadian schools following the COVID-19 lockdown report that children in a pandemic might have difficulties adapting. Gifted and twice-exceptional children—who might present special needs in this situation—could have different levels of psychosocial adaptation and mental-health needs than other children. This study assessed the psychosocial adaptation of gifted and twice-exceptional children and compared the adaptation levels of these individuals to those of non-identified gifted children. The results show that 62.5% of the gifted children had generally coped well with pandemic conditions, as did the non-identified gifted children (73.9%). Profiles Of Temperament And Perfectionism In High Ability College Students, Kathryn L. Fletcher, Kristie L. Speirs Neumeister, W. Holmes Finch, Tracy Cross

SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness

Different physical, mental, and motivational outcomes for perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns indicate that individuals have different experiences of perfectionism. Although research has focused on parenting practices as a factor related to these differences, little research has examined the impact of temperamental differences on perfectionism. In the current study, 434 high ability undergraduate students completed perfectionism, adult temperament, and personality measures. Latent class analysis that examined the patterns among the relationships between self-oriented perfectionism, socially prescribed perfectionism, and four dimensions of adult temperament (negative affect, effortful control, extraversion, orienting sensitivity) revealed three distinct subgroups. Utilizing previous research focusing on the Stigma of Giftedness Paradigm (SGP), this study explains social cognitive beliefs with the help of self-efficacy among students with gifts and talents (SWGT) in Ireland and India. The study considers the concept of person-environment fit with respect to how the SWGT feel they are being seen by others and how they react to their environment, where their self-efficacy plays a role. Irish and Indian students (N = 430) were matched by age (15-17) and gender. It is difficult to conceive that anyone—parent, educator, psychologist, or researcher—interested in giftedness/gifted education could not be aware of the word, overexcitability. What, then, has facilitated the popularity of the word in our field? A major force has been the research conducted investigating this concept’s relationship to giftedness, broadly speaking. What began with a handful of articles, published in the 1980s by a few interconnected American scholars, has become a veritable body of research. An Analysis Of Most Important Values Among Low-Income, High-Ability Middle School Students, Jennifer Riedl Cross

SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness

Value orientations, based on Schwartz’s theory of human values, were collected from low-income, high-ability middle school students (N = 215; 87.4% Black, Hispanic, or Mixed) through a values affirmation activity in the 7th and again in the 8th grade. Students ranked “Being successful” highest in 7th grade, “Being safe and secure” highest in 8thgrade. Most important values in the Conservation and Self-Transcendent quadrants predominated and were most stable from 7th to 8th grade.
